<!-- Region ID: us-oodham. -->
== Summary ==
The O'odham borderlands connect southern Arizona and northern Sonora, with related musical communities extending toward the Phoenix area. Waila is an especially recognizable part of social life: lively instrumental dance music that brings together accordion, saxophone, electric guitar, bass and drums. It is a living music for community occasions, not only a recording-archive category. University of Arizona teaching material situates the practice among O'odham communities around Tucson and Phoenix.<ref name="oodham-ua">[https://opentextbooks.library.arizona.edu/folkdance/chapter/chapter-6/ O'odham Waila Dancing], University of Arizona open textbook, section 5.2, consulted October 2026. == Contemporary and trending ==
Waila remains present in tribal radio and public celebrations. The Tohono O'odham Nation's Hewel Ni'ok stations explicitly showcase it as part of language and community programming.<ref name="oodham-radio">[https://www.tonation-nsn.gov/departments/administrative-offices/hewel_niok/ Hewel Ni'ok], Tohono O'odham Nation, current departmental account, consulted October 2026. These current occasions show how older and newer musical experiences belong together.<ref name="oodham-francis">[https://www.tonation-nsn.gov/st-francis-celebration/ St. Francis Celebration], Great Gu Achi District / Tohono O'odham Nation, 4–5 October 2026 program. == History ==
Waila developed through encounters among local communities and European/Mexican dance forms. Fiddle and percussion ensembles gave way to electrified bands while dance remained central. Its Sonoran geography predates today's border controls; continuing connections and difficulties of crossing are part of its modern setting.<ref name="oodham-asa">[https://nomadit.co.uk/conference/asa09/paper/3699 Waila: the music of the Tohono O'odham], Association of Social Anthropologists conference paper abstract, 2009. Researcher account explicitly locating waila in southern Arizona/northern Mexico; abstract access only.</ref>

== Genres ==
Waila includes polka, waltz and schottische-derived dance rhythms, with other regional dance influences. Traditional song, country, gospel and contemporary popular music also appear in O'odham community life. Waila's distinctive local role does not require every resident to prefer it over all other music.

== Artists ==
Gertie Lopez and Gertie and the T.O. Boyz are useful routes into the music, alongside the Joaquin Brothers' recorded legacy. The 2026 Gu Achi program names Desert Sky Winds Waila Band, the Boys Waila Band and other performers, giving a current community context rather than relying on origin stories alone.<ref name="oodham-francis" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The main core is the Tohono O'odham homeland in southern Arizona and northern Sonora. Linked Akimel O'odham communities around the Gila and Salt rivers add a more urban/suburban dimension near Phoenix; rural villages and gathering sites provide other centers. Modern Native public programs also connect O'odham music to Tucson and beyond.

Tribal/reservation components are useful geometry proxies and may legitimately be disconnected. They are not a measure of the entire surrounding population's preference. Research identifies a named cross-border people and dance culture, while MuGlobe interprets its extent into a map. The region must not be inflated into all Arizona or Sonora, nor cut off at the international boundary. It can overlap the wider Arizona–Sonora profile without losing its particular musical significance.
