== Summary ==
New Orleans is a musical region where jazz, brass bands, R&B, funk and hip-hop coexist with highly participatory neighbourhood traditions. Its significance is not simply that famous records were made there: music accompanies parades, social aid and pleasure club events, dancing and community life. The relationship between performers and participants is a defining feature across otherwise different musical practices. <ref name="nohistory">[https://home.nps.gov/jazz/learn/historyculture/jazz_history.htm A New Orleans Jazz History, 1895–1927], National Park Service.</ref><ref name="wwozstreet">[https://wwoz.org/programs/inthestreet Takin’ It to the Streets], WWOZ.</ref><ref name="bounce">[https://64parishes.org/entry/bounce Bounce], 64 Parishes / Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.</ref>

The city’s sound has always travelled. Musicians leaving for other centres helped shape jazz nationally, while later recordings and touring brought New Orleans bounce to new audiences. These outward journeys coexist with very local references and attachments. A musical account must therefore consider the neighbourhood setting and the international circulation without treating either as the whole story. <ref name="nohistory" /><ref name="bounce" />

WWOZ’s ''Takin’ It to the Streets'' documents social aid and pleasure clubs, second lines, Black Masking Indians, Baby Dolls and brass-band traditions. Its October 2026 listings provide direct evidence of continuing activity. The station’s artist directory also records working brass musicians and groups, including the Jackson Square All Stars and performers who combine brass-band approaches with hip-hop, funk and soul. <ref name="wwozstreet" /><ref name="wwozbrass">[https://www.wwoz.org/genres/brass-band Brass Band], WWOZ.</ref>

Big Freedia’s 2023 ''Central City'' offers another contemporary route, presented by the artist as a renewed approach to bounce. A 2024 report on the remembrance of saxophonist John “Prince” Gilbert described Rebirth’s mixture of funk, soul and jazz and the musical relationship between Gilbert and his son. These examples join innovation to mentorship and community memory rather than dividing the present from tradition. <ref name="freedia2023">[https://www.axios.com/local/new-orleans/2023/06/21/big-freedias-album-central-city Big Freedia’s first album since Beyoncé collaboration drops this week], Axios New Orleans.</ref><ref name="rebirth2024">[https://apnews.com/article/018d9129459b82d9fe761b0812048987 A traditional send-off in New Orleans for an innovative brass band musician], Associated Press.</ref>

== History ==
Early New Orleans jazz grew within a diverse dance-band world. The National Park Service describes a transition from string ensembles toward groups combining cornet, clarinet and trombone with rhythm instruments, as musicians responded to dancers and developed new approaches to phrasing and improvisation. Buddy Bolden’s importance belongs to this live environment; no surviving recording is required to recognize that oral testimony and later musicians’ experience place him centrally in the story. <ref name="nohistory" />

Migration helped spread the music while changing it. King Oliver’s Chicago work attracted other New Orleans musicians, including Louis Armstrong, but creative players also remained at home. Much later, bounce emerged in the early 1990s with local references, recurring sampled material and audience participation. Its eventual wider reach did not erase the neighbourhood relationships through which it first gained meaning. <ref name="nohistory" /><ref name="bounce" />

== Genres ==
Traditional jazz and brass-band music overlap, but the terms describe different aspects of performance. A brass band can move through streets and respond to dancers, while a smaller jazz ensemble may organize instrumental interplay in a club or recording. Contemporary brass musicians also incorporate other popular styles. The changing repertory is part of the tradition’s life rather than evidence that it has ceased to be regional. <ref name="wwozstreet" /><ref name="wwozbrass" />

Bounce is a dance-centred rap practice associated with fast momentum, repeated figures, local naming and call-and-response. The Showboys’ “Drag Rap,” known locally through the “Triggerman” reference, is one important source in its production history. R&B, funk and blues connect other parts of the city’s musical world, and listening to their rhythmic relationships helps explain exchange without collapsing all New Orleans music into one genre. <ref name="bounce" /><ref name="la-trad">[https://www.louisianafolklife.org/lt/articles_essays/treas_trad_la_music.html The Treasured Traditions of Louisiana Music], Louisiana Folklife Program.</ref>

== Artists ==
Buddy Bolden, King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet and Jelly Roll Morton open different parts of the early jazz account. Their careers also warn against equating birthplace, recording location and musical influence. New Orleans musicians often became nationally influential while working elsewhere, and those who remained locally active contributed to a scene broader than the best-selling records suggest. <ref name="nohistory" />

Rebirth and the New Birth Brass Band, associated with John Gilbert, provide later ensemble histories. Big Freedia, Juvenile and Mia X offer different relationships to bounce and wider hip-hop. WWOZ’s working-musician entries make room for less internationally visible players, while the club organizations, dancers and neighbourhood participants documented in its street-culture programme show that collective cultural work extends beyond the featured artist. <ref name="rebirth2024" /><ref name="bounce" /><ref name="wwozbrass" /><ref name="wwozstreet" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved outline covers metropolitan New Orleans and its lower-Mississippi surroundings. It is wider than the French Quarter and does not treat the tourist entertainment district as the entire musical city. Neighbourhood organizations, musicians’ homes, rehearsal networks and performance venues are distributed across the metropolitan landscape, with connections into nearby river communities.

The boundary is approximate and overlaps Louisiana’s wider musical frame. Cajun, Creole, Caribbean and other relationships cross it; touring and migration extend New Orleans music much farther still. The cited institutions document historical development and living activity at particular places and times, not a measured metropolitan preference contour. Distinct community practices retain their own names and meanings within this shared geography.
