== Summary ==
Nauru is a small but distinct musical public where community singing, civic commemoration, church repertoire and contemporary popular expression meet. Its musical life is not adequately described by one traditional dance or one imported style. Government event reports document choral competitions and ceremonial bands; more recent sources identify a regional music festival and work by the Nauruan poet and musician Kauw Tsitsi. These examples show both collective participation and individual authorship. <ref name="f1">[https://www.nauru.gov.nr/media/58403/nauru_bulletin__01_16feb2016__133_.pdf Nauru bwiema celebrates 48 years], Nauru Bulletin, issue 1/133, 16 February 2016, p. 2.</ref><ref name="f2">[https://www.nauruair.com/about-us/blog/post/nauru-hosts-inaugural-miss-micronesia-pageant-and-micronesia-music-festival Nauru hosts inaugural Miss Micronesia Pageant and Micronesia Music Festival], Nauru Airlines, October 2025.</ref><ref name="f3">[https://www.nauru-biennalevenezia.com/exhibitors/kauw-tsitsi/ Kauw Tsitsi — Trapped, 2025], Nauru pavilion, Biennale Venezia 2026.</ref>

The approved profile includes Nauruan song, hymns, Pacific pop, reggae and international music, but the balance among these categories remains provisional. Available documentation is much stronger on named public occasions than on private listening. Nauru should consequently be understood as a connected island public with several kinds of musical activity, rather than as a market whose leading genre has been measured.

In October 2025, Nauru hosted the inaugural Micronesia Music Festival alongside the Miss Micronesia pageant. The sponsor's programme and the government's subsequent bulletin document the event, which presented music from across the region. It placed Nauru in the role of host and broadcaster, not merely a recipient of recordings produced elsewhere. <ref name="f2" /><ref name="f4">[https://www.nauru.gov.nr/media/209182/nauru_bulletin__15_10oct2025__298_.pdf Nauru Bulletin, issue 15/298], Government of Nauru, 10 October 2025.</ref>

The announced line-up included Garden Rootz from Kiribati, Barab Harris and Sugahspooks from the Marshall Islands, and Zerobecoolin from the Federated States of Micronesia. Organizers also announced Nauru Media livestreaming and a Kiribati broadcasting partnership. These named visiting performers should not be mistaken for a list of Nauruan artists; the accessible account does not supply a complete locally based line-up. <ref name="f5">[https://advancenauru.com/2025/09/30/countdown-on-for-micronesia-music-festival-and-miss-micronesia/ Countdown on for Micronesia Music Festival and Miss Micronesia], Advance Nauru, 30 September 2025.</ref>

Another contemporary route is Tsitsi's Trapped, presented in the Nauru pavilion's 2026 exhibition material. The work addresses the island's experience of extraction, environmental damage and constrained futures through song and text. It demonstrates an individual critical voice within Nauru's musical life, alongside the more celebratory tone of civic festivals. <ref name="f3" />

== History ==
Public song is closely connected to historical remembrance. The government's 2012 Angam Day account describes song among the activities marking survival after severe population losses. It explains the significance of the 1932 and 1949 population milestones and the continued celebration on 26 October. In this context, a communal musical occasion carries a history of continuity and recovery, even when the performance itself is festive. <ref name="f6">[https://www.nauru.gov.nr/media/58171/nauru_bulletin__21_30oct2012__72_.pdf The spirit of Angam lives on], Nauru Bulletin, issue 21/72, 30 October 2012.</ref>

The 2016 independence celebrations also marked seventy years since the return of Nauruans from wartime Truk, now Chuuk. Church services framed the programme, and a tribal choral competition used Vinton Benjamin's Sailing, Sailing Back Home as its set song. Eamwit was reported as the winning group. A named composition, organized choirs and a particular anniversary provide a more grounded historical account than a generalized statement that islanders sing about the sea. <ref name="f1" />

Sound collections preserve further material, although they require careful identification. The Fanshawe archive includes Nauru within its Pacific field-recording holdings. That establishes an archival route for research; it does not by itself identify which recordings remain familiar or regularly performed locally. <ref name="f7">[https://fanshawemusic.com/music-archive Music Archive], Fanshawe One World Music.</ref>

== Genres ==
Choral music is one documented public form. The 2016 programme distinguishes a competition based on a shared song from church services. That distinction matters: similar ensembles can serve different purposes, and the word choir alone does not establish a genre. <ref name="f1" />

Ceremonial band music supplies another sound. A July 2020 government account describes the police band playing Nauru Bwiema, the national anthem, during an official parade; the ceremony also included I Know the Lord. This juxtaposition illustrates the presence of civic and devotional repertoire in public events, without implying that either dominates recreational listening. <ref name="f8">[https://www.nauru.gov.nr/media/131296/nauru_bulletin__12_10jul2020__216_.pdf Nauru Bulletin, issue 12/216], Government of Nauru, 10 July 2020.</ref>

Contemporary authored song can take a different form again. The exhibition platform CIFRA identifies Tsitsi as a rapper and lists Trapped as a short audiovisual work. Its public documentation supports discussion of the work's testimony and message, but detailed claims about vocal technique, production or instrumental texture would require listening analysis beyond the sources used here. <ref name="f9">[https://cifra.com/playlist/nauru-imagining-life-after-land Nauru — Imagining Life After Land], CIFRA exhibition platform.</ref>

== Artists ==
Kauw Tsitsi is a named Nauruan practitioner whose work provides a direct contemporary point of entry. The pavilion identifies him as a poet and musician born and based in Nauru; its accompanying biography places him in Yaren. Trapped is presented through lyrics, imagery and the artist's account of island experience. Its international exhibition setting expands the work's circulation without making it a representative sample of every Nauruan musician's concerns. <ref name="f3" />

Vinton Benjamin's Sailing, Sailing Back Home is another documented work, encountered here through the 2016 choral competition rather than a commercial chart. The Eamwit choir and the other participating groups belong in the story as interpreters, not simply as an anonymous backdrop to a composer. <ref name="f1" />

The police band and community choirs further remind readers that musical practitioners are not limited to recording artists. Their appearances may be documented through event reports instead of album catalogues. Conversely, the 2025 festival's named international visitors are evidence of regional exchange, not grounds for assigning those artists Nauruan origins. <ref name="f8" /><ref name="f5" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved boundary follows Nauru's island footprint. It distinguishes a local language and community public within wider Pacific circulation, while leaving room for visiting musicians, overseas relationships and imported repertoire. A regional festival hosted on the island makes that outward connection especially visible; no separate district-level genre boundaries can be justified from the evidence assembled here. <ref name="f2" /><ref name="f5" />

This remains a provisional listening-region profile. The sources support specific performances, songs and institutions, but do not measure a leading style, a current national chart or differences in taste by age or district. Government bulletins are useful evidence for events they document; artist and exhibition sources establish particular works. More detailed coverage would benefit from Nauruan musicians, church directors, broadcasters and listeners supplying credited recordings and accounts of everyday practice. Sparse online documentation is a research limitation, not evidence of sparse musical life.
