== Summary ==
Mindanao–Sulu is the southern Philippine musical region, encompassing Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago. Nationally circulating pop, ballads, rock and hip-hop coexist here with numerous community-specific instrumental, vocal and ritual traditions. Davao's PLAYERTWO and the Caraga-rooted songwriters of Oh! Caraga illustrate two contemporary paths: urban collective production and regional-language songwriting that connects Mindanao with Cebu and the wider Filipino music industry. <ref name="f1">[https://billboardphilippines.com/music/discover/playertwo-on-breaking-out-of-the-davao-scene-its-been-an-amazing-ride-interview-2024/ PLAYERTWO On Breaking Out Of The Davao Scene: “It’s been an amazing ride.” — 2024], Billboard Philippines; Jason Caballa.</ref> <ref name="f2">[https://www.philstar.com/the-freeman/opinion/2023/03/24/2254022/how-fate-brought-oh-caraga-together How “fate” brought Oh! Kulintang is an important southern association, but cannot represent the whole region. Maguindanaon gong music, Maranao Darangen, Yakan instruments, Tausug sung exchanges, Sama dance music and Subanen ritual sound have different practitioners and social settings. The region's coherence is geographic and relational; it is neither an ethnic bloc nor a single religious or commercial music market. <ref name="f8">[https://www.arts.gov/honors/heritage/danongan-kalanduyan Danongan Kalanduyan — 1995 National Heritage Fellow], National Endowment for the Arts.</ref> <ref name="f10">[https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/darangen-epic-of-the-maranao-people-of-lake-lanao-00159 Darangen epic of the Maranao people of Lake Lanao], UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.</ref> <ref name="f12">[https://ncca.gov.ph/about-culture-and-arts/culture-profile/gamaba/national-living-treasures-uwang-ahadas/ National Living Treasures: Uwang Ahadas], National Commission for Culture and the Arts.</ref> <ref name="f9">[https://pssc.org.ph/wp-content/pssc-archives/Institute%20of%20Philippine%20Culture/Research%20Reports%20and%20Monographs/Sulu%20Studies%203.pdf Tausug Literature: An Overview — Gerard Rixhon, Sulu Studies 3], Sulu Studies; Philippine Social Science Council archive.</ref> <ref name="f13">[https://www.nationalmuseum.gov.ph/2022/02/18/pagkawin-the-traditional-wedding-ceremony-among-the-sama-tabawan/ Pagkawin: The Traditional Wedding Ceremony among the Sama-Tabawan — 18 February 2022], National Museum of the Philippines.</ref> <ref name="f11">[https://ich.unesco.org/en/USL/buklog-thanksgiving-ritual-system-of-the-subanen-01495 Buklog, thanksgiving ritual system of the Subanen], UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.</ref>

Dated releases give a more reliable picture of recent activity than undifferentiated claims about what “Mindanao listens to.” In September 2025, PLAYERTWO released “Sabi Ko Sa'yo,” produced by LUSTBASS and drawing on Lani Misalucha's “Sana Dalawa Ang Puso Ko.” The result placed a familiar Filipino ballad within the group's hip-hop and R&B practice. Their earlier collaborations with FELIP, “FLYYY” and “Pagdali,” connected a Davao-origin collective to another prominent recording artist. <ref name="f4">[https://billboardphilippines.com/music/news/playertwo-new-single-sabi-ko-sayo/ PLAYERTWO Releases New Single “Sabi Ko Sa’yo” — 12 September 2025], Billboard Philippines; Rome Saenz.</ref> <ref name="f1" />

Oh! Caraga offers a different emphasis. In its 2023 interview, the band connected country, folk and pop with rural origins and a commitment to Bisaya songwriting. The members had entered Vispop separately before joining forces, making the Cebu-based movement part of their history without erasing their Caraga attachment. Their official site lists “Para Nimo” and “Bahandi” music videos dated 2026 alongside earlier songs including “Ipanumpa Ko.” These entries document continuing work, not comparative listener shares. <ref name="f2" /> <ref name="f3">[https://ohcaraga.com/ Oh! TJ Monterde's career links Cagayan de Oro with national and international song circuits. His management catalogue lists ''Sariling Mundo'' in 2024, “Silver” with South Korean artist 10CM in 2025, and “Hiraya Manawari” with KZ Tandingan in 2026. His earlier account of moving from Cagayan de Oro to Manila and building an online following helps explain that trajectory. Acoustic song and romantic pop belong to this region's account as fully as its better-known gong traditions. <ref name="f5">[https://cornerstoneent.ph/artists/tj-monterde TJ Monterde — artist catalogue], Cornerstone Entertainment.</ref> <ref name="f6">[https://entertainment.inquirer.net/233849/tj-monterde-face-behind-two-billboard-ph-top-20-hits TJ Monterde—the face behind two Billboard PH Top 20 hits — 11 July 2017], Philippine Daily Inquirer; Allan Policarpio.</ref>

== History ==
Different histories of circulation run through the south. Gerard Rixhon's ''Tausug Literature: An Overview'' describes Islamic recitation, local oral literature and social celebration as interwoven in everyday life. Its analytical division between religious and other expressive forms was not intended to separate them into sealed cultural compartments. This historical account also cautions against treating every meaningful vocal practice as entertainment; recited prayer has its own purposes and community understandings. <ref name="f9" />

Danongan Kalanduyan's biography documents a more specific musical journey. He grew up in Datu Piang's Maguindanaon musical environment, learned through family and community participation, went to the University of Washington in 1976, and subsequently taught in California. His career shows how a southern repertory became a resource for Filipino American cultural learning while retaining identifiable teachers and performance lineages. <ref name="f8" />

Davao also contributed to alternative popular song. Joey Ayala recalled recording ''Magkabilaan'' there in 1987 before its wider release in 1991. With Ang Bagong Lumad he combined Indigenous instruments with guitars and drums and addressed environment and society. This was an authored contemporary synthesis, not a substitute for the distinct traditional repertoires from which instruments came. His account of writing “Walang Hanggang Paalam” in 1983 connects personal feeling with the tensions of that period. <ref name="f7">[https://www.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/07/12/23/joey-ayala-to-record-live-solo-concert-at-70s-bistro Joey Ayala live at 70s Bistro to be recorded for vinyl release — 12 July 2023], ABS-CBN News.</ref>

Kulintang ensemble music makes rhythmic interdependence especially audible. In Kalanduyan's Maguindanaon practice the melodic row contains eight tuned, knobbed gongs; supporting gong and drum parts establish relationships within which a player can vary patterns. Describing that example precisely is more useful than assuming every southern gong ensemble has the same instruments or repertory. <ref name="f8" />

Darangen belongs to the Maranao of Lake Lanao. Its extended sung narratives carry heroic stories, customary knowledge and ethical questions. Specialist performers require memory, improvisational ability and command of a demanding poetic language. UNESCO describes wedding performances extending over nights and notes difficulties of transmission as archaic vocabulary becomes less widely understood. It is a distinct narrative art rather than a generic label for Muslim song. <ref name="f10" />

For Tausug sindil, Rixhon describes performers exchanging improvised teasing verses with gabbang-ensemble accompaniment. Verbal wit, rhyme and knowledge of the people present are central to the performance; a translation of content alone cannot reproduce the whole encounter. <ref name="f9" />

Instrumental sound is equally varied. Yakan kwintangan kayu uses suspended wooden logs in a practice connected with rice cultivation, while gabbang is a bamboo xylophone. <ref name="f12" /> In the Subanen Buklog ritual complex, people dance on a resonating raised wooden platform within a larger system of thanksgiving and social renewal. UNESCO's urgent-safeguarding inscription concerns the viability of that whole practice, not the popularity of a dance track. <ref name="f11" />

Recordings, teachers and dancers provide complementary entry points. ''Kulintang Kultura'', released by Smithsonian Folkways in 2021, pairs Danongan Kalanduyan and the Palabuniyan Kulintang Ensemble with diaspora musicians working across electronics, hip-hop, jazz and other styles. Kulintronica's “Under the Moon” and Gingee's “Gong Spirits” are among the latter selections. The project makes continuing creativity audible in principle without presenting diaspora reinterpretation as identical to a Mindanao community occasion. <ref name="f14">[https://folkways.si.edu/kulintang-kultura Kulintang Kultura: Danongan Kalanduyan and Gong Music of the Philippine Diaspora — SFW40593, 2021], Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.</ref>

Uwang Ahadas's documented Yakan teaching in Basilan emphasizes demonstration, touch and practice. The NCCA account also identifies his daughter Darna as a musician who taught others. Such family and teacher–student relationships matter alongside individual mastery; a repertory survives through the capacities of succeeding practitioners. <ref name="f12" />

In Tawi-Tawi, Hadja Sakinur-ain Mugong Delasas of Tubig-Boh, Bongao, received recognition in 2023 for Sama igal. Her account relates movement to tagunggu music and to knowledge learned from her mother. <ref name="f15">[https://ncca.gov.ph/about-culture-and-arts/culture-profile/gamaba/sakinur-ain-delasas/ National Living Treasures: Sakinur-ain Delasas], National Commission for Culture and the Arts.</ref> The National Museum's separate documentation of Sama-Tabawan weddings places igal alongside the tagunggu'an ensemble in an intimate celebration for relatives and invited friends. These sources describe particular communities and occasions, not an interchangeable “Sulu dance.” <ref name="f13" />

For contemporary song, Oh! Caraga's “Ipanumpa Ko” and TJ Monterde's “Tulad Mo” offer accessible contrasts in ensemble storytelling and relaxed acoustic delivery. Their artists' own explanations are guides to creative intention, rather than claims that either style speaks for everyone in Mindanao. <ref name="f2" /> <ref name="f6" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved outline covers Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago, with coastlines used to shape its island envelope. Connections with the Visayas overlap the northern transition, while maritime relationships continue beyond the displayed region. Neither language use nor musical familiarity stops at these cartographic edges.

This broad unit needs internal distinctions among Davao, Caraga, northern Mindanao, the Lake Lanao and Cotabato landscapes, the Zamboanga peninsula, Basilan and the Sulu island chain. It does not equate a political administrative region with a musical community. The boundary is an editorial visual aid, not an ethnic border or endorsement of a territorial claim. Artist histories, institutional descriptions and community scholarship support a differentiated synthesis; they supply no uniform survey from which to calculate the most popular music for every locality.
