== Summary ==
Mexican Bajío–West joins Jalisco, Colima and Michoacán with Aguascalientes, Guanajuato and Querétaro. Mariachi and ranchera provide especially strong cultural reference points, but the region also sustains Purépecha song, romantic band music, rock and rap. The important connection is between locally grounded musical identities and repertoires that circulate nationally and internationally. Mariachi's broad songbook and Marco Antonio Solís's career as both performer and songwriter illustrate that outward movement.<ref name="mariachiunesco">[https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/mariachi-string-music-song-and-trumpet-00575 Mariachi, string music, song and trumpet], UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.</ref><ref name="solis">[https://www.latingrammy.com/es/noticias/marco-antonio-solis-named-2022-latin-recording-academy-person-of-the-yeartm/ Marco Antonio Solís: Persona del Año 2022], Latin Recording Academy.</ref>

The region should not be treated as a single mariachi homeland without internal distinctions. Pirekua belongs specifically to Purépecha communities of Michoacán, while Guanajuato has powerful associations with José Alfredo Jiménez and newer urban music. Guadalajara's rock history offers a further counterpoint to the state's familiar mariachi image.<ref name="pirekua">[https://ich.unesco.org/es/RL/la-pirekua-canto-tradicional-de-los-purhepechas-00398 La pirekua, canto tradicional de los p’urhépechas], UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.</ref><ref name="josealfredo">[https://www.gob.mx/cultura/prensa/jose-alfredo-jimenez-el-rey-de-la-cancion-ranchera-jaime-almeida?state=published José Alfredo Jiménez, el rey de la canción ranchera: Jaime Almeida], Secretaría de Cultura / Fonoteca Nacional.</ref><ref name="santafegto">[https://www.guanajuatocapital.gob.mx/noticias/celebran-la-llegada-del-2024-con-brindis-monumental-y-show-de-santa-fe-klan-en-guanajuato-capital/ Celebran la llegada del 2024 con show de Santa Fe Klan en Guanajuato Capital], Municipality of Guanajuato.</ref><ref name="mana">[https://www.mana.com.mx/bio-content-1 Maná: biography], Maná.</ref>

Traditional mariachi continues through organized encounters as well as family learning. Jalisco's twenty-fourth national meeting, ''Herencia que suena'', was held in October 2025; its stated focus brings musicians and dancers, predominantly from rural settings, into Guadalajara. That is a different function from presenting a polished commercial concert alone: the event connects bearers of regional repertoire and performance practice.<ref name="mariachi2025">[https://sc.jalisco.gob.mx/convocatorias/convocatorias-activas/xxiv-encuentro-nacional-de-mariachi-tradicional XXIV Encuentro Nacional de Mariachi Tradicional: Herencia que suena], Secretaría de Cultura de Jalisco.</ref><ref name="mariachimeeting">[https://sic.cultura.gob.mx/ficha.php?disciplina=&table=festival_otros&table_id=144 Encuentro Nacional de Mariachi Tradicional], Secretaría de Cultura, Sistema de Información Cultural.</ref>

The contemporary public is musically plural. Guanajuato's celebration welcoming 2024 placed Santa Fe Klan alongside cumbia and other dance-oriented performers, and his 2026 Fenapo announcement describes a mixture of rap, hip-hop, cumbia and Mexican regional music. Meanwhile, the 2025 promotion of Dolores Hidalgo's José Alfredo Jiménez route shows older songs continuing as participatory local memory. These examples document coexistence rather than a simple replacement of ranchera by urban music.<ref name="santafegto" /><ref name="santafe2026">[https://fenapo.slp.gob.mx/noticias/2026/5/23/santa-fe-klan-har%C3%A1-vibrar-la-fenapo-2026/ Santa Fe Klan hará vibrar la Fenapo 2026], Feria Nacional Potosina.</ref><ref name="jose2025">[https://boletines.guanajuato.gob.mx/2025/01/02/visita-el-recorrido-bohemio-en-dolores-hidalgo-cin-de-jose-alfredo-jimenez/ Visita el Recorrido Bohemio en Dolores Hidalgo CIN de José Alfredo Jiménez], Government of Guanajuato.</ref>

== History ==
Mariachi developed as a flexible western Mexican ensemble tradition. String-based groups and later ensembles with trumpets share a broad repertoire that includes sones, dances, serenades and narrative songs. Its history is therefore larger than the accompaniment of a solo ranchera star, even though that format became widely recognizable. Oral learning and performance at civic, religious and family occasions remain part of its transmission.<ref name="mariachiunesco" />

Twentieth-century songwriters gave local references national reach. José Alfredo Jiménez, from Dolores Hidalgo, created songs including “El rey”, “El jinete” and “Si nos dejan”. Marco Antonio Solís, from Ario de Rosales in Michoacán, began with his cousin Joel before Los Bukis established his wider career in the 1970s. Guadalajara's Maná emerged from Sombrero Verde, a group committed to performing and writing rock in Spanish. These are distinct histories of professional popular music within the same broad region.<ref name="josealfredo" /><ref name="solis" /><ref name="mana" />

== Genres ==
Mariachi is an ensemble and performance tradition whose repertoire crosses several song categories; ranchera names a song tradition rather than a fixed instrumental lineup. Modern mariachi commonly combines trumpets and violins with vihuela and guitarrón, allowing melodic responses, rhythmic strumming and bass support around the voice. Its adaptable repertoire includes bolero ranchero and cumbia as well as older dances.<ref name="mariachiunesco" />

Pirekua has its own language, expressive conventions and social role. It may be sung alone, in small vocal groups or with instrumental ensembles; its singers, the ''pirériecha'', interpret older songs and create new ones about affection, history, religion and social concerns. It can also mediate communication between families and communities. The region's other recordings range from Maná's guitar-band songs to Santa Fe Klan's rap-and-cumbia combinations, making language, vocal delivery and ensemble texture useful listening distinctions.<ref name="pirekua" /><ref name="mana" /><ref name="santafe2026" />

== Artists ==
José Alfredo Jiménez is a starting point for the ranchera songbook, while the museum in his birthplace and associated musical route connect those songs back to Dolores Hidalgo. Marco Antonio Solís and Los Bukis represent another route through romantic popular song and the commercial band world; his work as arranger, producer and songwriter for other singers broadens his importance beyond his own recordings.<ref name="josealfredo" /><ref name="jose2025" /><ref name="solis" />

Maná's “Rayando el sol” and the album ''¿Dónde jugarán los niños?'' introduce Guadalajara's contribution to internationally circulating rock in Spanish. Santa Fe Klan supplies a contemporary Guanajuato voice crossing rap and dance repertoires. Alongside these highly visible careers, the participants in traditional mariachi encounters and the pirériecha of Michoacán are indispensable practitioners. Their significance lies in sustained performance and community knowledge, not only in chart visibility.<ref name="mana" /><ref name="santafe2026" /><ref name="mariachimeeting" /><ref name="pirekua" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved footprint comprises Jalisco, Colima, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Michoacán and Querétaro. “Bajío–West” is an editorial combination of related but nonidentical geographical labels, intended to keep western Mexican ensemble traditions and the connected central-western popular-music circuit visible at globe scale.

It does not claim that all six states share identical preferences or that Purépecha music belongs uniformly across the polygon. Mariachi extends into neighboring Nayarit and far beyond Mexico; the region's rock, rap and romantic recordings also travel widely. The sources establish specific traditions, careers and recent events. They support a regional synthesis while leaving internal differences and audience proportions open.
