== Summary ==
Mande Heartlands is a cross-border frame for southern and western Mali, Upper Guinea and adjoining Mande-connected communities. Jeliya, Wassoulou song, Mande popular music, Afropop and rap give the region a recognizable mixture without making it one uniform musical culture. The distinction between inherited specialist roles and other forms of music-making is especially important. Mande music is larger than the internationally familiar image of a griot playing kora. <ref name="r1">[https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/M/bo3629899.html Mande Music — Eric Charry, University of Chicago Press], Mande Music — Eric Charry, University of Chicago Press.</ref><ref name="r3">[https://old.afropop.org/articles/the-women-of-wassoulou-music-a-primer The Women of Wassoulou Music: A Primer — Afropop Worldwide], The Women of Wassoulou Music: A Primer — Afropop Worldwide.</ref>

The region overlaps national frames because shared repertories and musical relationships predate and exceed their borders. It also includes urban production and contemporary listening. A rural association does not make a form historically static, and a studio arrangement does not automatically detach it from local knowledge.

== Contemporary and trending ==
Contemporary work joins continuity with new collaboration. Reporting in 2025 on the Lamomali project describes Balla Diabaté continuing a musical relationship involving Fatoumata Diawara after Toumani Diabaté's death. This is one concrete example of repertoire and collaboration being renewed through different performers, rather than tradition remaining attached permanently to one celebrated individual.

Rap has also interacted directly with specialist instrumental traditions. Music In Africa's Iba One biography identifies collaborations with Sidiki Diabaté. Such work makes it difficult to divide regional listening neatly into traditional elders and modern youth. The source documents an artistic relationship; it does not establish how every rural or urban audience receives it. <ref name="f2">[https://www.musicinafrica.net/fr/directory/iba-one Iba One], Music In Africa artist directory.</ref>

Wassoulou singers continue to use distinctive vocal and instrumental resources for new social commentary. Their place in the mixture makes women's authorship central to the regional overview. <ref name="r3" />

== History ==
The historical field contains several interrelated spheres. Charry's study distinguishes hunters' music, jeliya, drumming and modern guitar-based music. Those categories help separate musical responsibilities, repertories and instruments that can otherwise become blurred in a broad national or ethnic description. The study's geographic scope across Mali, Guinea and Senegambia also explains why political borders alone are an inadequate framework. <ref name="r1" />

Jeliya involves more than entertainment: specialist performers maintain repertory and social knowledge through praise, historical narration and musical skill. The passage of material into recordings and amplified ensembles changes the circumstances of performance without necessarily ending those relationships. A named piece can have several versions and uses rather than one definitive commercial original. <ref name="r1" /><ref name="r2">[https://folkways.si.edu/abdoulaye-diabate-and-super-manden/fakoli/world/music/track/smithsonian Fakoli — Abdoulaye Diabate and Super Manden, Smithsonian Folkways], Fakoli — Abdoulaye Diabate and Super Manden, Smithsonian Folkways.</ref>

Wassoulou popular music has a related but distinct history, with singers often working outside hereditary jeli status and drawing on regional resources associated with hunters' music. Women such as Oumou Sangaré and Nahawa Doumbia have made public commentary part of an internationally circulating repertory. This difference should remain visible instead of calling every prominent singer a griot. <ref name="r3" />

== Genres ==
Jeliya and Wassoulou are not interchangeable genre labels. The first points toward a specialist musical and social institution; the second identifies a regional popular field with its own vocal approach and instrumental resources. Kora, balafon and ngoni belong to different performance possibilities, while electric guitar can translate or develop particular patterns rather than simply replace an acoustic instrument. <ref name="r1" /><ref name="r3" />

Mande pop, Afropop and rap bring further arrangements and modes of address. The region's identity lies partly in how recognizable musical knowledge is redeployed across these formats. Listening for repeated accompaniment, lead-voice phrasing and the interaction between words and response can reveal continuity without denying differences in social purpose. <ref name="r2" /><ref name="f2" />

== Artists ==
Toumani Diabaté's recordings provide several routes through the kora's possibilities: solo work, duets with Ballaké Sissoko and the larger Symmetric Orchestra. The label biography documents those projects, though its old present-tense promotional wording should not be taken as current biographical status. The recordings show artistic choices within a wider tradition, not the sound of every Mande community. <ref name="f3">[https://www.worldcircuit.co.uk/artists/toumani-diabate/ Toumani Diabaté: biography], World Circuit Records.</ref>

Abdoulaye Diabaté and Super Manden's ''Fakoli'' offers another named performance through which to explore repertory. Oumou Sangaré and Nahawa Doumbia introduce contrasting Wassoulou voices, while Iba One and Sidiki Diabaté connect the discussion with hip-hop collaboration. These examples are deliberately plural because the regional field includes several kinds of expertise and public address. <ref name="r2" /><ref name="r3" /><ref name="f2" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The accepted extent links southern and western Mali, Upper Guinea and adjoining Mande-connected areas. Its edges are approximate transitions, not an ethnic ownership boundary. It overlaps Mali and Guinea because country-wide media and cross-border musical relationships coexist. Scholarship establishes the broader connections but does not validate every coordinate of the authored polygon. <ref name="r1" />

The synthesis is supported by repertory research and named performances, with dated contemporary examples added where available. It does not assume identical taste among all speakers of related languages or derive current popularity from historical prestige. Individual genres can extend considerably farther than this regional heartland; those wider distributions belong to the separate genre view.
