== Summary ==
Macaronesian Islands is MuGlobe's provisional grouping of the Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands. It connects three Atlantic archipelagos whose music participates in Portuguese- and Spanish-language networks while retaining distinct island practices. The term is used here for orientation, not as the name of one established musical style or a uniform listening community.

Madeira's bailinho, Azorean viola da terra performance and Canarian isa belong to different repertoires. Official regional descriptions identify distinctive instruments and dance settings for each.<ref name="madeira">[https://www.visitmadeira.com/en/what-to-do/culture-passionates/folklore/ Folklore: the Bailinho da Madeira], Madeira Islands Tourism Board.</ref><ref name="viola">[https://arquipelagocentrodeartes.azores.gov.pt/pt/programacao/concerto-viola-da-terra/ Concerto Viola da Terra], Arquipélago, Centro de Artes Contemporâneas.</ref><ref name="isa">[https://www3.gobiernodecanarias.org/medusa/wiki/index.php?title=Isas_sueltas_de_Gran_Canaria Isas sueltas de Gran Canaria], Gobierno de Canarias, CanariWiki.</ref> Contemporary pop, rap, songwriting and experimental festivals add further connections, making the islands active producers of music as well as places where traditions are maintained.

== Contemporary and trending ==
Madeira's NAPA represented Portugal at Eurovision in 2025 with “Deslocado”. RTP's account records the performance and its use of Madeiran embroidery in the stage clothing, a visible statement of the band's island connection within a national entry.<ref name="napa">[https://media.rtp.pt/festivaldacancao/artigos/portugal-termina-a-eurovisao-2025-em-21-o-lugar-com-os-napa-e-a-cancao-deslocado/ Portugal termina a Eurovisão 2025 com NAPA e Deslocado], RTP, May 2025.</ref> Regional identity can be expressed through presentation and biography as well as inherited musical forms.

Quevedo, raised in Gran Canaria, connects the Canaries with Spanish-language urban music.<ref name="quevedo">[https://www3.gobiernodecanarias.org/medusa/wiki/index.php?title=Quevedo Quevedo], Gobierno de Canarias, CanariWiki.</ref> PROMUSICAE's annual report placed ''Buenas noches'' fourth in Spain's 2025 album chart.<ref name="charts">[https://www.promusicae.es/noticias/bad-bunny-rosalia-w-sound-beele-con-ovy-on-the-drum-y-rose-con-bruno-mars-son-los-numero-1-de-las-listas-oficiales-de-musica-de-2025-n628/ Listas oficiales de música de 2025], PROMUSICAE, January 15, 2026.</ref> That is national chart evidence, not a measurement of preferences within the Canary Islands alone.

In the Azores, Tremor's 2026 programme included an open call for São Miguel residents to work with Itiberê Zwarg and the Rabo de Peixe School of Music toward a collaborative performance.<ref name="tremor">[https://www.tremor-pdl.com/en/article/convocatoria-aberta-residencia-com-itibere-zwarg-e-a-escola-de-musica-de-rabo-de-peixe/ Open call: residency with Itiberê Zwarg and the Rabo de Peixe School of Music], Tremor, 2026 programme.</ref> The 2026 ''Tangedores'' concert also brought together viola da terra players Evandro Meneses and Rafael Carvalho, representing Terceira and São Miguel.<ref name="tangedores">[https://whatson.azores.gov.pt/evento/concerto-andquottangedoresandquot/ Concerto Tangedores], What’s On Azores / Associação de Juventude Viola da Terra, 2026.</ref> These examples combine new creation with local participation.

== History ==
Organised performance, teaching and recording have shaped the islands' modern musical histories. Los Sabandeños began activity in Tenerife in 1965. The Auditorio de Tenerife's account describes a group formed from the university environment of La Laguna, whose recordings bring together traditional material, original songs and adaptations.<ref name="sabandenos">[https://www.auditoriodetenerife.com/es/interprete/los-sabandenos/ Los Sabandeños], Auditorio de Tenerife.</ref> Their history is a concrete example of folk repertoire becoming an extensive concert and recording project.

In the Azores, regional cultural documentation traces the incorporation of viola da terra into the Ponta Delgada conservatory curriculum in 2005, initially with Ricardo Melo and subsequently Rafael Carvalho.<ref name="conservatory">[https://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ficheiros/pca/201264113057.pdf Viola da Terra: cultural and teaching context], Direção Regional da Cultura dos Açores, 2012 programme.</ref> Formal teaching is one route through which an instrument associated with community music gains new opportunities for transmission.

Madeira's tourism authority describes parish and Casa do Povo folk groups as participants in maintaining local performance.<ref name="madeira" /> Such organisations are part of the history of presentation, alongside family and informal practice. The music reaching a visitor or a festival stage is shaped by choices of performers, teachers and institutions.

== Genres ==
Madeira's bailinho combines dance, singing and regional instruments. The official description names small string instruments including braguinha and rajão, together with triangle and brinquinho.<ref name="madeira" /> These details provide a more specific picture than a generic label of Portuguese island folk.

Canarian isa is a song-and-dance form. The government educational account of Gran Canaria's isas sueltas identifies plucked strings including timple, guitar, laúd and bandurria, with percussion also present.<ref name="isa" /> Its instrumentation and dance setting differ from the Madeiran example even though both belong to wider Iberian-associated musical worlds.

Azorean viola da terra practice varies within the archipelago. The ''Tangedores'' programme explicitly pairs twelve- and fifteen-string instruments and seeks to expand their repertoire.<ref name="tangedores" /> A separate Rafael Carvalho concert description combines pieces from several islands with music from other countries.<ref name="viola" /> These projects show continuity through active interpretation, while pop and electronic activity occupy additional musical spaces.

== Artists ==
NAPA's “Deslocado” and Quevedo's ''Buenas noches'' provide accessible recent recordings with different island connections.<ref name="napa" /><ref name="charts" /> Valeria Castro, from La Palma, offers another route through contemporary songwriting. Her official account describes ''El cuerpo después de todo'' as a second album produced by Carles Campi Campón and recorded between Mexico and Spain.<ref name="valeria">[https://valeria-castro.es/ Valeria Castro: biography and El cuerpo después de todo], Valeria Castro.</ref> The production geography itself illustrates how an island-associated career can operate across the Atlantic.

Los Sabandeños lead toward ensemble folk and an extensive recorded repertoire, while Rafael Carvalho and Evandro Meneses provide named instrumental entry points into the Azores.<ref name="sabandenos" /><ref name="tangedores" /> Tremor's collaborative programme offers a further route into experimental and participatory performance.<ref name="tremor" />

These examples are selected for their documented connections, not because they define a shared archipelagic canon. Their differences are central to the region: island origin, working base, performance tradition and audience reach need not coincide.

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved envelope selects land in the Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands and excludes the Iberian mainland. It also excludes Cape Verde, which has its own African-region treatment, even though broader geographical uses of Macaronesia may include it. The three archipelagos remain distinct within this deliberately provisional musical grouping.

Sources include regional cultural and educational institutions, a national broadcaster, a chart compiler, performers and festival organisers. The chart establishes national commercial visibility for one recording; cultural descriptions establish particular instruments and practices; programmes establish specific activity. None demonstrates a single island-wide preference, much less one shared across all three archipelagos. The grouping is useful for exploring Atlantic relationships while its constituent musical histories deserve separate attention.
