== Summary ==
Māori Heartlands is an editorial name for a broad network of Māori-connected communities in the northern and eastern North Island. Waiata, kapa haka and contemporary Māori-language music are central reference points, alongside reggae, hip-hop, pop and other styles. The label recognizes strong community connections in this area, but does not define where Māori culture begins or ends. Southern iwi and Māori living elsewhere remain part of the wider musical world.<ref name="r1">[https://teara.govt.nz/en/traditional-maori-songs-waiata-tawhito/print Traditional Maori songs: waiata tawhito, Te Ara], Traditional Maori songs: waiata tawhito, Te Ara.</ref><ref name="r3">[https://teara.govt.nz/en/kapa-haka/print Kapa Haka, Te Ara], Kapa Haka, Te Ara.</ref><ref name="f1">[https://audioculture.co.nz/profile/rob-ruha Rob Ruha], AudioCulture.</ref>

Song here is both an expressive art and a means of carrying relationships, memory and knowledge. Te Ara distinguishes traditional forms by their purposes, while contemporary projects show musicians choosing many different recording languages and arrangements. Ka Hao and Rob Ruha's 35, Jordyn with a Why's songwriting and organized kapa haka offer contrasting examples of that continuing creativity.<ref name="r1" /><ref name="f2">[https://www.nzonscreen.com/all-music-videos/ka-hao-35-2021/ 35 — Ka Hao featuring Rob Ruha], NZ On Screen.</ref><ref name="f3">[https://www.teaonews.co.nz/2025/05/14/songwriting-in-te-reo-is-my-superpower-jordyn-with-a-why/ Songwriting in te reo is my superpower — Jordyn With a Why], Te Ao Māori News.</ref>

Te Kapa Haka o Ngāti Whakaue, representing Te Arawa, won Te Matatini in 2025 at the national festival in New Plymouth. The organizers describe its performance as dedicated to Sir Robert Gillies, the last surviving member of the Māori Battalion, who died in 2024. This specific example shows collective performance engaging with recent remembrance, rather than existing only as a display of an undated traditional past.<ref name="f4">[https://www.tematatini.co.nz/news/te-matatini-2025-announces-supreme-winner-at-sold-out-finals-day/ Te Matatini 2025 announces supreme winner], Te Matatini.</ref><ref name="f5">[https://www.tematatini.co.nz/news/te-matatini-025-ngati-whakaue-triumps-with-standout-performance Te Matatini 2025: Ngāti Whakaue triumphs], Te Matatini.</ref>

Recorded song develops through other networks. Jordyn with a Why's interview with Te Ao Māori News discusses writing in te reo Māori and the album Hibiscus Moon, Love & Justice. Her He Rei Niho collaboration with Ruth Smith and Kawiti Waetford emerged through Reo Māori SongHubs and received the 2024 APRA Maioha Award. Such work makes language learning and collaborative songwriting visible within contemporary popular music.<ref name="f3" /><ref name="f6">[https://www.teaonews.co.nz/2024/10/09/kaitito-kaiaka-waiata-maori-steal-the-show/ Kaitito Kaiaka: Waiata Māori steal the show], Te Ao Māori News.</ref>

== History ==
Waiata tawhito form part of an oral tradition through which histories, genealogies, emotions and relationships are remembered and performed. Their meanings depend on the circumstances and communities to which they belong. Te Ara's account therefore distinguishes song types and functions instead of treating all traditional Māori vocal music as a single chant form.<ref name="r1" />

Kapa haka's modern history includes organized groups and national competition. Te Matatini traces its festival to the New Zealand Polynesian Festival of 1972, while explaining the present event's connection with language and whānau wellbeing. The continuity lies in sustained collective work as well as public competition. Contemporary songwriters draw on this wider cultural environment without necessarily reproducing a competition bracket or traditional form in each recording.<ref name="r3" /><ref name="f7">[https://www.tematatini.co.nz/the-festival/ The Festival], Te Matatini.</ref>

== Genres ==
Oriori, waiata tangi and waiata aroha are commonly identified categories within traditional waiata: songs associated with children and their learning, laments, and love songs respectively. Those short descriptions are an introduction, not a substitute for the particular text, history and performance context. Kapa haka joins vocal and movement practices through a group's coordinated presentation, with several forms appearing within a performance programme.<ref name="r1" /><ref name="r3" />

Contemporary Māori music is equally varied. Ka Hao and Rob Ruha's 35 uses a youth choir and a song associated with the East Coast, while Jordyn with a Why foregrounds Māori-language songwriting in a modern recording practice. Alien Weaponry's Te Rā makes another route visible through metal. Language and cultural relationships connect these projects, but they do not make their musical textures, audiences or purposes identical.<ref name="f2" /><ref name="f3" /><ref name="f8">[https://nzmusic.org.nz/music-industry-news/aotearoas-metal-trio-alien-weaponry-announce-new-album-te-ra-drop-first-single-mau-moko/ Alien Weaponry announce Te Rā and Mau Moko], New Zealand Music Commission.</ref>

Rob Ruha and Ka Hao provide a strong geographically grounded entry point. The video account for 35 describes songwriting wānanga with Rob and Cilla Ruha and scenes of coastal life; its title refers listeners toward a particular local world rather than an abstract national identity. Ruha's wider career connects composition, performance and Māori-language work across several musical settings.<ref name="f2" /><ref name="f1" />

Jordyn with a Why, Ruth Smith and Kawiti Waetford illustrate collaborative composition and the support structures that make new waiata possible. Te Kapa Haka o Ngāti Whakaue offers a collective performance route, while Alien Weaponry demonstrates how heavy music can carry Māori cultural expression into different venues and recording networks. These artists and groups are examples of active practice, not owners or sole representatives of the whole mapped area.<ref name="f6" /><ref name="f4" /><ref name="f8" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved footprint emphasizes the northern and eastern North Island, including broad community connections rather than exact iwi or hapū boundaries. It overlaps the Aotearoa New Zealand region. The title Māori Heartlands is a map label, not a claim that Māori life is absent elsewhere or that urban Māori communities are less culturally grounded.

The evidence supports strong song, language and collective-performance networks, but does not measure one dominant genre across the polygon. A national event held in Taranaki and a recording connected with Te Tairāwhiti demonstrate different scales of musical belonging. Future boundary refinement should use iwi and community knowledge with care, while retaining southern Māori and diaspora connections in the wider national account. Administrative and editorial map lines cannot substitute for whakapapa or the cultural authority of performers.<ref name="f4" /><ref name="f2" /><ref name="r1" />
