== Summary ==
Libya's music connects local song and dance, malouf, Arabic pop, reggae and rap. Tripoli, Benghazi, smaller coastal communities and the Saharan south contribute different emphases. The country is therefore more than the space between better documented Egyptian and Algerian music industries. It has its own repertories, artists and listening histories, including Amazigh and Tuareg connections that a solely Arabic-language overview would miss. <ref name="f1">[https://www.auxsons.com/focus/la-libye-relative-inconnue-de-la-scene-musicale-arabe/ La Libye, relative inconnue de la scène musicale arabe], Coline Houssais, #AuxSons, 6 November 2023.</ref>

The accepted region is a broad and provisional frame. It recognizes common circulation while retaining regional differences and the limits of the available evidence. Malouf in Tripoli, merskawi associated with eastern and southern song, and contemporary studio music belong in the same overview without being treated as interchangeable forms.

== Contemporary and trending ==
A 2023 specialist overview describes Libyan reggae and rap as active parts of contemporary listening, with rap particularly associated with networks in Tripoli and Benghazi. The account follows changes after the 2011 uprising rather than freezing the scene at its revolutionary moment. Songs and artists may change their themes, production or public position; the label protest music is consequently too narrow for the whole field. <ref name="f1" />

There are also continuing pressures on live and heritage performance. Al Jazeera's 2023 reporting on malouf describes musicians maintaining weddings and social occasions amid weak institutional support and interrupted festival activity. These difficulties help explain why the visibility of a tradition on large stages is an unreliable measure of its presence in everyday life. The report documents a particular period, not a claim that every later programme has remained suspended. <ref name="f2">[https://www.aljazeera.net/arts/2023/3/23/فن-الموشحات-المالوف-ميراث-الأندلس فن الموشحات المالوف.. ميراث الأندلس المفقود في ليالي رمضان طرابلس], Abdul Aziz al-Wasli, Al Jazeera, 23 March 2023.</ref>

== History ==
Libyan popular music developed through regional song, broadcasting and exchanges with other Arabic-speaking centers. Artists working in Cairo or Paris contributed to broader pop histories while retaining links to Libya. Ahmed Fakroun and Hamid al Shaeri are examples of careers that make a national-only account inadequate. Their movements are part of Libyan musical history rather than evidence that significant creativity happens only abroad. <ref name="f1" />

Malouf has a distinct Libyan institutional and devotional history. Reporting on the practice describes the role of Sufi lodges and the work of Hassan Araibi's ensemble in collecting, presenting and sustaining repertory. Its social settings include religious occasions and weddings as well as concerts. This differs from treating it simply as a surviving Andalusi sound detached from later Libyan choices. <ref name="f2" />

Rap became especially visible around the 2011 uprising. Contemporary reporting on a 2012 Tripoli performance by GAB describes songs circulating before the group's first public show. Recorded and online exchange could therefore precede an established live circuit. The event illustrates how a local scene is built through relationships among artists, organizers and audiences, rather than appearing suddenly because one song attracts international attention. <ref name="f3">[https://libyaherald.com/2012/12/libyan-rap-showcase-delights-tripoli-audience/ Libyan rap showcase delights Tripoli audience], Libya Herald, December 2012.</ref>

== Genres ==
Malouf joins poetry, melody and ensemble practice in a locally maintained learned repertory. Its shared name with Tunisian and eastern Algerian traditions does not eliminate differences among them. Merskawi supplies another regional song history, particularly associated in specialist accounts with eastern and southern Libya. Reggae has been localized through Libyan voices and arrangements, while rap uses a different relation between words, beat and direct address. <ref name="f1" /><ref name="f2" />

Arabic pop is part of both domestic production and wider listening. Amazigh and Saharan practices add further languages and histories; they should not be absorbed into a single national folk style. The useful question is how these sounds coexist in particular communities and occasions. The present evidence supports that plural picture more securely than any definitive ordering of the country's most popular genres.

=== Repertoire distinctions ===
[[Merskawi]] — Merskawi is a Libyan popular-song field with important Benghazi/Barqa and southern connections. The name also covers disputed boundaries: some practitioners distinguish a particular southern repertoire from the wider popular music marketed under the label. <ref name="africa-recovery-ly-merskawi-contestation">[https://arabmusicmagazine.org/item/203-2020-10-13-14-06-07 موسيقى المرسكاوي الليبية تتعرض للتشويه, Arab Music Magazine, 8 May 2013]. [[Toubou lute music]] — Toubou lute music denotes the plucked-lute repertoire known through such instrument names as Teda keleli and Daza cegeni, also transcribed tchegueni. It is a repertoire category within the larger musical worlds of Toubou communities, not a name for every Toubou song, drum ensemble or dance. Catherine Baroin's comparative ethnography distinguishes local names and practices, including a Kreda terminology exception. <ref name="africa-recovery-td-baroin-lute">[https://www.researchgate.net/publication/278821726_Le_luth_chez_les_Toubou_Approche_comparative_et_evolution Catherine Baroin, Le luth chez les Toubou : approche comparative et évolution, Journal des Africanistes 76-1 (2006),59–80]. == Artists ==
Ahmed Fakroun provides a route into Libyan pop's international recording history. Hamid al Shaeri's work links Libya with the Egyptian pop industry, while Ibrahim al Hasnawi is a reference point in the localized reggae story. These examples identify different musical pathways rather than a uniform school. <ref name="f1" />

Hassan Araibi and the ensemble continuing his legacy represent a different form of musical labor: maintaining and presenting malouf repertory. GAB's documented Tripoli performance offers a further contrast, emphasizing a developing rap platform and the public life of recorded songs. Musicians working outside headline circuits remain important, especially where weddings, local events and informal circulation sustain the profession. <ref name="f2" /><ref name="f3" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The accepted outline covers Libya with Saharan and Amazigh overlaps. It is deliberately a practical broad frame, not proof that a homogeneous national audience occupies the whole territory. The contrast between coastal music networks, eastern and southern song and Saharan connections is part of the definition's usefulness and its limitation. <ref name="f1" />

The regional profile remains provisional because the sources provide better evidence for named practices and performers than for the comparative distribution of current listening. Fresh specialist reporting improves the earlier bibliography's overreliance on neighboring countries' malouf descriptions. The boundary is an editorial illustration, not a claim about political allegiance, ethnicity or measured genre shares. More locally specific research should refine the account without requiring the wholesale replacement of Libya's musical diversity by one better-known export.
