== Summary ==
KwaZulu-Natal is a South African listening region with strong associations with gqom, maskanda and isicathamiya, alongside gospel, amapiano and other nationally circulating music. Durban's electronic production networks coexist with rural, township and migrant-linked song traditions. These practices have different histories and social settings, even where artists and audiences move between them.<ref name="r1">[https://www.stampthewax.com/2021/10/07/a-brief-history-of-gqom/ A Brief History of Gqom — interview with DJ Lag], A Brief History of Gqom — interview with DJ Lag.</ref><ref name="r2">[https://musicinafrica.net/magazine/popular-music-south-africa/ Popular music in South Africa — Music In Africa], Popular music in South Africa — Music In Africa.</ref><ref name="r3">[https://www.bloomsbury.com/in/hearing-maskanda-9781501377778/ Hearing Maskanda: Musical Epistemologies in South Africa — Barbara Titus, Bloomsbury], Hearing Maskanda: Musical Epistemologies in South Africa — Barbara Titus, Bloomsbury.</ref><ref name="r5">[https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/N/bo3632138.html Nightsong: Performance, Power, and Practice in South Africa — Veit Erlmann], Nightsong: Performance, Power, and Practice in South Africa — Veit Erlmann.</ref>

The region is particularly instructive because neither an exclusively rural nor an exclusively metropolitan description works well. Guitar-led storytelling, carefully organized vocal groups and digitally produced dance tracks all belong to its musical life. The provincial label identifies a dense set of connections, not a single sound shared by all residents.<ref name="r3" /><ref name="r5" /><ref name="r1" />

DJ Lag's Southside Mixtape, released in November 2025, documents a new stage in Durban-rooted electronic music. His own release page describes connections between gqom, techno and 3-step and credits collaborators including Zee Nxumalo, DJ Maphorisa, Sykes and Ape Drums. It is an example of deliberate expansion from a local practice rather than evidence that gqom has lost its regional identity.<ref name="f1">[https://realdjlag.bandcamp.com/album/southside-mixtape Southside Mixtape], DJ Lag / Black Major × Ice Drop.</ref>

Maskandi also has a substantial contemporary recording and performance life. Khuzani's profile links his career to Nkandla and lists a sequence of albums extending to Angidlali Nezingane in 2024. His artist site presents continuing performance and public activity. These sources document a living field of composition and fandom; they do not require an unsupported comparison of maskandi's provincial audience share with amapiano or gqom.<ref name="f2">[https://musicinafrica.net/node/378220 Khuzani], Music In Africa artist directory / Siphokazi Ndlovu.</ref><ref name="f3">[https://khuzani.co.za/ Khuzani — official website], Khuzani.</ref>

== History ==
Gqom's development is illuminated by DJ Lag's account of its local production environment and musical choices. The history concerns young producers, dance and circulation within Durban networks, followed by wider exposure. That trajectory differs from the older histories of maskanda and isicathamiya, which involve migration, work, identity and forms of collective performance.<ref name="r1" /><ref name="r3" /><ref name="r5" />

Veit Erlmann's Nightsong places isicathamiya within performance, power and social practice; Barbara Titus's Hearing Maskanda emphasizes how people know and understand music through situated listening. These scholarly approaches caution against explaining either tradition only as a picturesque survival. South African History Online's musical timeline supplies a broader chronology in which vernacular forms, commercial recording and national political changes intersect.<ref name="r5" /><ref name="r3" /><ref name="r6">[https://sahistory.org.za/article/development-music-south-africa-timeline-1600-2004 The development of Music in South Africa timeline — SA History Online], The development of Music in South Africa timeline — SA History Online.</ref>

== Genres ==
Gqom is associated with forceful, often sparse electronic rhythm and a close relationship to dance. Its organization differs from a generic four-to-the-floor description of house, and DJ Lag's work demonstrates that it can combine with other electronic approaches without becoming musically indistinguishable from them. The producer's testimony is valuable evidence for these choices.<ref name="r1" /><ref name="f1" />

Maskanda, also commonly written maskandi, gives guitar, voice and verbal expression distinctive roles. Research on introductory techniques highlights izihlabo and variation among performers, making the opening gestures themselves worth hearing carefully. Isicathamiya centres organized vocal-group performance with its own aesthetic and social history. Gospel overlaps with choral and popular-production worlds, but devotional purpose alone does not make it synonymous with isicathamiya.<ref name="r4">[https://journals.co.za/doi/10.25159/1016-8427/1465 Maskandi: a critical general inductive analysis of Zulu maskandi songs — Sipho Albert Ntombela], Maskandi: a critical general inductive analysis of Zulu maskandi songs — Sipho Albert Ntombela.</ref><ref name="r5" /><ref name="r2" />

== Artists ==
DJ Lag's artist-led interview and Southside Mixtape offer complementary entry points: one explains local history, while the other documents a specific contemporary set of collaborations. The release credits make it possible to follow singers and producers across regional networks instead of treating a headline name as the sole author of an electronic scene.<ref name="r1" /><ref name="f1" />

Khuzani provides a contrasting route through maskandi. His Nkandla background and recording history connect vernacular song with a contemporary artist career. Isicathamiya should additionally be approached through ensembles and their performance conventions, rather than only through celebrity biographies. Listening across these settings reveals different forms of musical organization: the producer and collaborators, the singer-guitarist and ensemble, and the rehearsed vocal group each distribute creative work differently.<ref name="f2" /><ref name="r4" /><ref name="r5" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The region follows KwaZulu-Natal's provincial boundary. It includes Durban and other coastal urban centres as well as rural and inland communities. The administrative line is a convenient visual outline, not an acoustic barrier: migration and national media connect these practices with Gauteng, neighbouring provinces and international audiences.

The evidence supports particularly strong regional affinities for gqom, maskanda and isicathamiya while preserving their different geographies. It does not imply that every resident participates in these traditions or that nationally popular music is secondary everywhere in the province. Scholarly histories, performer testimony and recent release records together provide a more reliable account than a single undated claim about which genre is most popular.<ref name="r1" /><ref name="r3" /><ref name="r5" /><ref name="f1" />
