== Summary ==
Iberian Interior is MuGlobe's broad region for central, northern-interior and eastern Spain outside the more specific regional overlays. Its name is shorthand: the approved footprint also includes the Valencian coast, Murcia and Cantabria. It connects major Spanish-language recording and performance centres with locally distinctive music, rather than identifying a single interior style.

Madrid's pop and rock history, Aragonese jota and Valencia's club culture provide three different points of entry. The Ministry of Culture describes jota through locally varying combinations of singing, dancing and instruments, while Valencia's IVAM has documented the visual and musical environment of the Ruta del Bacalao.<ref name="jotareport">[https://www.portalinmaterial.cultura.gob.es/dam/jcr%3A5c9d4932-c3a3-4f54-9624-336b7523dc36/4--informe-la-jota-como-g-nero-tradicional-informe-t-cnico-para-su-declaraci-n-como-mrpci.pdf La Jota como género tradicional: informe técnico], Ministerio de Cultura.</ref><ref name="ivam">[https://ivam.es/es/noticias/el-ivam-expone-el-diseno-grafico-de-la-ruta-del-bacalao/ El IVAM expone el diseño gráfico de la Ruta del Bacalao], Institut Valencià d’Art Modern, 2022.</ref> Such differences are essential to understanding this deliberately broad regional frame.

== Contemporary and trending ==
AMORE's debut album ''TOP, HITS, BALLADS, ETC...'', released in May 2025, illustrates contemporary movement between regional origins and Madrid's creative networks. Sony identifies María Moreno Martínez as a Murcian artist based in Madrid and describes a pop project drawing on trip-hop, ambient music and jota. She receives production credit across the album, alongside collaborators including Dinamarca.<ref name="amore">[https://www.sonymusic.es/actualidad/amore-debuta-con-el-album-top-hits-ballads-etc/ AMORE debuta con el álbum TOP, HITS, BALLADS, ETC...], Sony Music España, May 9, 2025.</ref>

Traditional music also sustains current public activity. Zaragoza's 2026 Fiestas del Pilar programme included its official jota singing competition, with separate rounds and dance events in the wider competition structure.<ref name="pilar">[https://zaragoza.es/sede/servicio/premios-concursos/4522 CXL Certamen Oficial de Jota Aragonesa: Canto, Fiestas del Pilar 2026], Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza.</ref> This documents an organised performance community rather than a genre confined to archival recordings.

El Naán's ''Germinal'' appeared in Ponferrada's July 2025 Caminos de Música programme. The municipal theatre described a septet combining Castilian-rooted material, contemporary textures, poetry and other musical influences.<ref name="naan">[https://teatro.ponferrada.org/eventos/germinal/ Germinal: El Naán Banda], Teatro Municipal Bergidum, July 11, 2025.</ref> The programme offers a specific example of renewed folk performance within this extensive region, without establishing a regional popularity ranking.

== History ==
Madrid's Movida is a prominent part of Spain's late twentieth-century popular-music history. RTVE's retrospective treats the February 1980 tribute to Canito at the Escuela de Caminos as an important gathering in its development, and follows the roles of performers, radio, nightlife and visual culture. Los Secretos, Nacha Pop, Alaska y los Pegamoides and Radio Futura became associated with that changing musical environment.<ref name="movida">[https://www.rtve.es/noticias/20200209/movida-madrilena-cuando-espana-dio-salto-del-blanco-negro-color/2000000.shtml La Movida madrileña: cuando España dio el salto del blanco y negro al color], RTVE, February 9, 2020.</ref>

Valencia developed another history of nightlife. IVAM's ''Ruta Gráfica'' exhibition, presented in 2022, traced the Ruta del Bacalao through posters, illustration and graphic design, beginning with the city's early-1980s underground environment. Its account connects music to venues and the materials through which events reached their audiences.<ref name="ivam" />

These urban histories sit beside older repertoires whose public presentation has also changed. A Ministry of Culture technical report distinguishes community jota from professionalised or staged versions, warning that theatrical stylisation can depart from local practices.<ref name="jotareport" /> A festival performance and a village social dance may thus draw on related material while serving different purposes.

== Genres ==
Pop, rock, rap and dance music provide broad routes through the region's recording culture; locally specific repertoires require closer description. In Aragon, jota encompasses song, dance and instrumental performance, supported by associations, competitions and cultural organisations both within the region and among communities elsewhere.<ref name="jota">[https://www.portalinmaterial.cultura.gob.es/pci-ccaa/aragon/jota-aragonesa.html La Jota Aragonesa], Ministerio de Cultura.</ref>

The wider jota family is not exclusive to Aragon. The Ministry's technical report describes marked differences in accompaniment, from voice and tambourine to wind-and-percussion ensembles or plucked strings. It also notes places where singing has particular prominence.<ref name="jotareport" /> These distinctions make a single uniform “Spanish folk sound” an inadequate description.

C. Tangana's ''El Madrileño'' supplies a different form of connection. His label presents the 2021 album as a Madrid-centred project extending through collaborations into Latin America.<ref name="tangana">[https://www.sonymusic.es/actualidad/de-madrid-al-mundo-c-tangana-publica-el-madrileno-el-disco-que-lo-consolida-como-artista-integral/ De Madrid al mundo: C. Tangana publica El Madrileño], Sony Music España, February 26, 2021.</ref> Contemporary production can therefore evoke a particular city while drawing on relationships far beyond the map boundary. AMORE's more recent work demonstrates another combination of pop production and selected traditional references.<ref name="amore" />

== Artists ==
Nacha Pop's “Chica de ayer”, Los Secretos' “Déjame” and Radio Futura's “Enamorado de la moda juvenil” provide identifiable entries into the recording culture discussed in RTVE's Movida retrospective.<ref name="movida" /> They should be heard as separate artists and recordings rather than interchangeable examples of one movement.

For a later Madrid-based project, ''El Madrileño'' brings C. Tangana into collaboration with performers including Jorge Drexler, Kiko Veneno and Andrés Calamaro.<ref name="collaborations">[https://www.rtve.es/play/noticias/20210127/c-tangana-colaboraciones-album/2069802.shtml C. Tangana publica las colaboraciones de El Madrileño], RTVE, January 27, 2021.</ref> AMORE's ''TOP, HITS, BALLADS, ETC...'' points toward a younger, experimentally inclined pop practice, while El Naán's ''Germinal'' offers a concert-based engagement with Castilian material.<ref name="amore" /><ref name="naan" />

The contrast among these examples is useful: a city-based album, a regional song-and-dance competition and a folk ensemble represent different ways music becomes publicly visible. None alone describes the listening habits of the many provinces included here.

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved provincial footprint includes Madrid, the two Castilian autonomous communities, Extremadura, Aragon, La Rioja, Cantabria, the Valencian provinces and Murcia. It does not include Portugal. Its breadth makes it a practical browsing region rather than a claim that these places share one language, repertoire or cultural identity.

The research uses a broadcaster's historical account, cultural-institution documentation, municipal programmes, a museum exhibition and artist release information. These sources establish particular practices and projects. They do not support a measured hierarchy of genres across the whole footprint. More specific local studies could refine the balance among its component areas; this article retains the approved geography and makes its internal differences visible. Connections with neighbouring regions, including flamenco and Catalan-language musical networks, continue across the map edges.
