== Summary ==
Greenland's musical region combines Greenlandic-language popular song, rock and hip-hop with drum singing, dance and a distinctive choral inheritance. These forms have different histories and social settings. Drum performance connects embodied knowledge, storytelling and community participation; the popular recording world connects Nuuk, other coastal settlements, Denmark and a wider Arctic circuit. Neither can be reduced to the other.<ref name="greenlanddrum">[https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/inuit-drum-dancing-and-singing-01696?RL=01696 Inuit drum dancing and singing], UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.</ref><ref name="greenlandmusic">[https://visitgreenland.com/activities/music/ Your guide to traditional and popular Greenlandic music], Visit Greenland.</ref><ref name="deertarrak">[https://katuaq.gl/en/events/beatrice-deer-x-tarrak Beatrice Deer X Tarrak], Katuaq.</ref>

Language and authorship are particularly important in the rock tradition. Sumé's first album in 1973 became part of a period of cultural and political assertion, while later groups such as Nanook built careers through Greenlandic songwriting and international touring. Modern instrumentation is therefore a medium of local expression as well as a connection with global genres.<ref name="sumefilm">[https://www.bullittfilm.dk/sume Sume — The Sound of a Revolution], Bullitt Film.</ref><ref name="nanookstudy">[https://greenlandicpopularmusic.com/en/nanook/ Nanook], Greenlandic Popular Music / Andreas Otte.</ref><ref name="nanooknordic">[https://www.norden.org/en/nominee/nanook Nanook: nominee for the Nordic Council Music Prize 2017], Nordic Council.</ref>

Katuaq's September 2026 programme paired Greenlandic rapper Tarrak with Nunavik singer Beatrice Deer. The venue presented Tarrak's socially conscious hip-hop alongside Deer's combination of indie rock, pop and throat singing. This is a useful recent example of Greenland as an active participant in Arctic musical exchange: shared Indigenous concerns travel through different languages and distinct musical forms.<ref name="deertarrak" />

Drum singing also belongs to the present. UNESCO inscribed Greenland's Inuit drum dancing and singing in 2021, describing both social performance and transmission. Recent reporting on singer-songwriter Naja Parnuuna documents younger artists reclaiming practices affected by Christian suppression. Such activity is cultural renewal and contemporary creation, not simply preservation of a fixed past. These sources document artists and institutions; they do not provide a current nationwide ranking between rap, rock, hymns and international pop.<ref name="greenlanddrum" /><ref name="greenlandrevival">[https://apnews.com/article/e3402e2bf207cd3486be00d2925ff5d6 Greenlanders embrace pre-Christian Inuit traditions], Associated Press.</ref>

== History ==
Christian missions introduced hymns while discouraging older drum practices. Greenlandic musicians subsequently developed their own choral expression, including the slow, ornamented communal singing associated with ''inuttooq''. Rasmus Berthelsen's “Guuterput Qutsinnermiu” is an important example. Other outside encounters left different traces: European dance music contributed to polka, while American country influences helped shape the Vaigat music associated with the mining town of Qullissat and Jens Hendriksen's band.<ref name="greenlandmusic" />

Sumé gave the rock band a new cultural force in the 1970s. The documentary ''Sumé — The Sound of a Revolution'', directed by Inuk Silis Høegh, follows the young musicians who released Greenland's first rock album in 1973 and their relationship with opposition to Danish colonial power. This history helps explain why a guitar-band recording could carry significance beyond entertainment. It should not erase the older singers, choirs and dance musicians whose work continued alongside it.<ref name="sumefilm" /><ref name="greenlandmusic" />

== Genres ==
In drum dancing, a performer holds a frame drum, the ''qilaat'', and strikes it with a stick while moving the body and singing. Performance may involve an individual voice or a supporting group. Song subjects include hunting, everyday experience, affection and humor; the practice has social and expressive functions rather than one uniform ceremonial meaning. Listening involves voice, drum articulation and the movement of the performer together.<ref name="greenlanddrum" />

Hymn singing offers a different ensemble texture, with sustained collective voices and local shaping of melody. Vaigat brings country-related instrumentation into a Greenlandic setting. Nanook's melodic rock is built around guitars, bass, drums, keyboards and the voices of the Elsner brothers; Tarrak's work foregrounds rhythmic verbal delivery and social commentary. The juxtaposition shows why “traditional” and “modern” are insufficient genre categories: each form has its own technique, history and community of use.<ref name="greenlandmusic" /><ref name="nanooknordic" /><ref name="deertarrak" />

== Artists ==
Sumé is an essential historical starting point, with the documentary providing an accessible account of the band's creative and political context. Nanook offers another path. Christian and Frederik Elsner developed the group around their singing and guitar playing and were involved in the family record company Atlantic Music. An early song, “Inuup Tarraa”, accompanied Christian's film; their debut album was recorded in 2009. These links between filmmaking, recording and a family music enterprise help explain the infrastructure behind the songs.<ref name="sumefilm" /><ref name="nanookstudy" />

Nanook's 2017 Nordic Council Music Prize nomination recognized both its recordings and live work, including repeated appearances in Japan. Tarrak represents a younger hip-hop strand, while Naja Parnuuna illustrates renewed engagement with drum traditions. Choral singers and community drum performers also belong in any account of Greenlandic musicianship; their importance is not dependent on an individual album career or international award.<ref name="nanooknordic" /><ref name="deertarrak" /><ref name="greenlandrevival" /><ref name="greenlanddrum" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved area follows Greenland's territorial outline, but musical life is concentrated in coastal settlements rather than distributed evenly across the ice-covered interior. Nuuk's institutions provide strong documentation without representing every locality. The boundary is an editorial aid for exploring this connected coastal musical world, not a measured contour of taste or a statement about political status.

Connections with Denmark, Nunavik and the wider Inuit world are essential to the account. Greenlandic rock recorded abroad remains part of Greenland's musical history; visiting Arctic artists do not thereby become local performers. The sources support distinct repertoire histories, named careers and recent programming. They provide a firmer basis for describing coexistence and circulation than for declaring one genre universally most popular.
