== Summary ==
French Polynesia contains several related but distinct musical worlds. Tahitian-language popular song, ‘ori Tahiti dance music and hīmene choral traditions are especially visible through institutions and media based in Tahiti. Yet the Marquesas, Tuamotu, Australs and Gambier cannot simply be treated as outlying versions of Papeete. Even within the choral field, the recognized tārava styles distinguish Tahiti, Raromata‘i and Tuha‘a Pae, and other archipelagos maintain repertoires outside those competition categories.<ref name="r1">[https://www.maisondelaculture.pf/cms/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Programme-HEIVA-i-Tahiti-2017.pdf Heiva i Tahiti 2017, Maison de la Culture], Heiva i Tahiti 2017, Maison de la Culture.</ref><ref name="f1">[https://www.maisondelaculture.pf/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Hiroa-N%C2%B0133-oct.pdf Heiva tārava rau : des voix s’élèvent des archipels — Hiro‘a 133, October 2018], Maison de la Culture / Hiro‘a.</ref>

The contemporary scene includes bands, singer-songwriters, DJs and alternative music alongside community choirs and dance orchestras. Tiare FM's 2025 awards ballot, for example, separately recognized songs, groups, producers and rock or alternative artists. Meanwhile the Heiva and Marquesan Matavaa provide major settings for original group creation. The region is consequently best heard as a multilingual island network, with locally rooted performance and international musical forms interacting through several different institutions.<ref name="f2">[https://www.tiarefm.pf/cms/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/TABLEAU-VOTE-TMA-2025.pdf Tiare Music Awards 2025 — nominees by category], Tiare FM.</ref><ref name="f3">[https://matavaa.org/matavaa-2025 Matavaa 2025], COMOTHE — Matavaa o te Henua Enana.</ref>

The 2025 Tiare Music Awards illustrate the breadth of the recorded scene. The ballot included Nohorai's ''Ro‘o te fenua'', Papehau and Hivarai's ''Au manava'', and DJ Vilone's collaboration ''Elle aime Shipa''. Its producer category named Vilone, Harmelo, Mamu, Pokessi and Tommy Driker; the rock and alternative category included Hiva, Manahune and Yellincat. These are nominations within one station's audience and awards process, not a territory-wide ranking.<ref name="f2" />

Communal performance also continues through structured teaching and new composition. Heiva Taure‘a's March 2025 programme brought ten secondary schools, six from islands outside Tahiti, into dance and orchestra presentations at To‘atā. Students developed original themed performances through a project linking language, music and physical education.<ref name="f4">[https://www.maisondelaculture.pf/heiva-taurea-2025/ Heiva Taure‘a 2025], Maison de la Culture.</ref> In the Marquesas, the 2025 Matavaa gathered island delegations around language, music, dance and cultural transmission at Ua Huka. Its separate inter-island organization makes visible a cultural centre of gravity that a Tahiti-only account would miss.<ref name="f3" />

== History ==
Hīmene history intertwines older Polynesian vocal practices with introduced Protestant hymnody. A Maison de la Culture account describes the resulting repertoire as a vehicle for local legends, histories, landscapes and district identity. Public singing competitions were part of the nineteenth-century July celebrations, allowing communities to represent themselves through repertoire as well as performance. Church influence therefore did not eliminate local authorship or place-specific subjects.<ref name="f5">[https://www.maisondelaculture.pf/3eme-edition-du-heiva-tarava-tuhaa-pae-les-australes-a-lhonneur/ 3ème édition du Heiva Tarava Tuhaa pae : les Australes à l’honneur], Maison de la Culture.</ref>

More recent institutions have expanded the settings for these traditions. The dedicated Heiva Tārava concert began in 2015; subsequent editions foregrounded particular styles and then opened to additional archipelagos. In a 2018 discussion, teacher Mama Iopa explained that distinctive Marquesan and Tuamotuan singing did not necessarily fit the Heiva i Tahiti's existing categories. The invited Arutua choir brought rū‘au paumotu and teki, with Tahitian texts reflecting local language change. This history shows that festival classifications are constructed frameworks: useful for teaching and presentation, but narrower than the full range of island music.<ref name="f1" /><ref name="f5" />

Tārava is a large-ensemble vocal art in which differentiated voice parts and collective coordination matter as much as an individual melody. The official Heiva programme distinguishes Tārava Tahiti, Tārava Raromata‘i and Tārava Tuha‘a Pae, alongside rū‘au and ‘ūtē categories. Local specialists stress differences of delivery between islands rather than one interchangeable Polynesian choir sound.<ref name="r1" /><ref name="r2">[https://www.maisondelaculture.pf/cms/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Hiroa-N%C2%B0123-De%CC%81cembre.pdf Hīroʻa123: Heiva Tāraʻa Tuhaa Pae and interview with Mama Iopa — Maison de la Culture], Hīroʻa123: Heiva Tāraʻa Tuhaa Pae and interview with Mama Iopa — Maison de la Culture.</ref>

For dance, percussion provides another recognizable musical language. To‘ere slit drums and pahu drums create contrasting timbres, while the conch and nose flute belong to the wider instrumental heritage. The ukulele, introduced through wider Pacific circulation, became a prominent part of Tahitian music.<ref name="f6">[https://www.tahititourisme.au/discover/tahitian-culture/polynesian-musical-instruments/ Polynesian musical instruments], Tahiti Tourisme.</ref> Contemporary song can use very different arrangements: Vaiteani's Tahitian- and English-language folk songs centre a lead voice and instrumental accompaniment, while local producer categories explicitly recognize electronic creation. The coexistence of these formats is more informative than attaching a single rhythm to the entire territory.<ref name="f7">[https://www.giromusic.com/artiste/vaiteani/ Vaiteani — artist profile], Giro Music.</ref><ref name="f2" />

Recognizable practitioners include both named singers and the leaders of large ensembles. Mama Iopa, Myrna Tuporo, has worked as a teacher, composer, group leader and festival specialist, connecting Rurutu and the Tuha‘a Pae tradition with teaching in Tahiti.<ref name="f5" /> The 2025 Ta‘urua Hīmene jury biographies identify Mike Teissier with Reo Papara and conservatory teaching, and Pierrot Faraire with Rapa, Tamariki ‘Oparo and the transmission of traditional song. They exemplify the importance of arranging, language expertise and sustained rehearsal to the musical life of a choir.<ref name="f8">[https://www.maisondelaculture.pf/taurua-himene-2025/ Ta‘urua Hīmene 2025 — jury biographies], Maison de la Culture.</ref>

Vaiteani brings together Tahitian singer Vaiteani and Alsatian musician Luc, using Tahitian and English in a folk-oriented repertoire. The duo's recordings provide an accessible example of language continuity within a contemporary touring format.<ref name="f7" /> Nohorai, Papehau, Meari U and the groups on the Tiare ballot offer further routes into present-day recorded work. Their selection here identifies documented activity and public visibility; it does not establish that any one represents every island's preferred sound.<ref name="f2" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved region includes all French Polynesian archipelagos. This practical territorial outline links shared broadcasting and cultural institutions while retaining distinctions among Society, Marquesan, Tuamotuan, Austral and Gambier repertoires. It does not imply that those traditions have identical languages, vocal techniques or histories. The 2018 discussion of forms outside standard tārava competition categories is particularly useful evidence of the limits of an umbrella label.<ref name="f1" />

The boundary is an editor-authored visual frame, not a measured division of musical taste. Cook Islands, Hawaiian, French and other connections continue across it, while diaspora performers may be based elsewhere. Recent institutional programmes establish contemporary participation; older specialist discussions explain historical and stylistic distinctions. The available material is strongest for Tahiti, choral traditions and major festivals, and less complete for everyday listening on smaller islands. That imbalance should remain visible rather than be filled with unsupported popularity claims.
