Summary
Ethiopia contains several connected and distinct musical worlds. Amharic and Oromo popular-song publics, northern Tigrinya Guayla, Afar repertoires, Somali song and southeastern communities, Azmari, Ethio-jazz and borderland Waza practice require different accounts. National media and multilingual creators connect them without supplying a single national sound.

Buraanbur: Hawa Feminist Coalition’s June 2023 Qardho workshop taught younger women composition and used Buraanbur to address their rights and social concerns. In 2025 St Paul reporting, Naciima Noor describes intergenerational learning, original commissions and a continuing wedding livelihood. These examples show different living institutions of transmission and authorship.

Buraanbur: The repertoire’s histories include domestic and celebratory settings as well as public political expression. Scholarly distinctions among Somali poetic forms help explain why Buraanbur cannot be reduced to a dance beat or absorbed into a male-centered account of formal poetry. Later teaching and migrant adaptation extend those expressive possibilities.

Dhaanto: John William Johnson’s 1972 study distinguishes Dhaanto from Wiglo, Hirwo and Belwo within a family of smaller poetic genres. Afrax’s later research addresses continuity and innovation as Somali poetry and theater moved through post-independence institutions. These accounts support a differentiated history rather than a single all-Somali folk category.

Buraanbur — Buraanbur is a Somali women’s poetic and sung performance field, joining composition, recitation or chant, rhythm and participatory dance. It can praise, celebrate, advise and criticize. Its formal and social identity is more specific than “women’s music” generally.

Dhaanto — Dhaanto is a Somali sung poetic and dance form with a distinct identity within the Horn’s many verbal-musical genres. Community performance and later popular adaptations connect rural social practice with towns and migrant publics. It is one named repertoire, rather than a synonym for every Somali dance or song.

Waza ensemble music — Waza denotes both gourd-trumpet instruments and the coordinated ensemble repertoire of Berta communities in the Sudan–Ethiopia borderlands. This entry concerns that musical practice. Distributed instrumental parts, singing, movement and community authority over the instruments distinguish it from a generic category of African wind music.

Artists
Afar song: Houssein Haylé provides a documented example of modern Afar adaptation. Community singers and dancers, including women whose work is often most visible at social celebrations, are equally relevant to transmission. A concert headliner alone would give an incomplete account of who makes this music.

Buraanbur: Naciima Noor, Ayan Mohamud and drummer Fatuma Jimcaale are named practitioners in the St Paul report. Rahma Hashi supplies a poet’s account of social address. Yurub Noor, a participant in the Qardho programme, articulates a younger activist use of the form. Their differing roles recognize composers, accompanists and learners.

Dhaanto: Aar Maanta is a documented contemporary interpreter whose own account relates his work to Jigjiga’s dance practice. Local singers and dancers remain central to the form’s social life; the repertoire cannot be adequately represented by one touring artist.

Waza ensemble music: Ensemble players, instrument makers and community custodians maintain the repertoire together. Hussein Abbas is a named practitioner in the Ginais reporting. The instrument maker's choice and cultivation of gourds and the coordinated knowledge of the players are musical expertise, even where authorship is not expressed through a named composer or commercial recording artist.
