<!-- MuGlobe Region identity: world-eastern-caribbean. -->

== Summary ==
The Eastern Caribbean region here comprises the Leeward and Virgin Islands, a network connected by carnival, calypso, soca, reggae, dancehall and the movement of performers. The name describes a broad musical neighborhood rather than one national culture. A calypso competition in Anguilla can bring together singers from Antigua, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, St Maarten and both Virgin Islands jurisdictions, making the relationship concrete without erasing the participants' local identities.<ref name="geeve2025">[https://anguillafocus.com/antigua-and-barbudas-geeve-crowned-leeward-islands-calypso-monarch-2025/ Antigua and Barbuda’s Ge’Eve crowned Leeward Islands Calypso Monarch 2025], Anguilla Focus.</ref>

Alongside these shared genres are distinctive practices, including Virgin Islands quelbe and fungi and island string-band traditions. The region also contains concert and visitor-oriented music that does not fit a carnival-centered picture. St Barthélemy's classical festival and the varied St Kitts Music Festival demonstrate how different musical publics can occupy the same broad island chain.<ref name="quelbealbum">[https://folkways.si.edu/stanley-and-the-ten-sleepless-knights/quelbe-music-of-the-u-s-virgin-islands/caribbean-world/album/smithsonian Quelbe! == Contemporary and trending ==
Recent competitions show both continuity and generational change. Antigua and Barbuda's Ge'Eve Phillip won the 2025 Leeward Islands Calypso Monarch in Anguilla with “One Man” and “Daughter Come,” after developing through Antigua's junior competitions. Queen Roxxy of Anguilla and Drewzy of St Kitts followed in the placing. Montserrat's December 2025 final crowned De Bear, whose “Ge Dem Licks” used the competitive calypso stage for pointed personal and musical rivalry.<ref name="geeve2025" /><ref name="montserrat2025">[https://discovermni.com/2025/12/30/de-bear-crowned-calypso-monarch-as-finals-deliver-drama-and-tributes/ De Bear Crowned Calypso Monarch as Finals Deliver Drama and Tributes], Discover Montserrat.</ref>

Large festivals connect that local activity with international touring. St Kitts's announced 2026 roster included Nu Vybes Band International and Rucas H.E alongside Machel Montano, Beres Hammond, Fantasia and several Jamaican dancehall performers. Its 2025 bill had included Honey Bees String Band and the St Kitts Steel Orchestra, showing that the event's mix extends beyond imported headliners.<ref name="skfestival2026">[https://www.sknis.gov.kn/2026/02/03/st-kitts-music-festival-unveils-powerhouse-2026-roster-featuring-heavy-hitters-and-chart-topping-artistes/ St. Kitts Music Festival Unveils Powerhouse 2026 Roster], St Kitts and Nevis Information Service.</ref><ref name="skfestival2025" />

Smaller islands participate on their own scale. Saba's July–August 2025 programme included bouyon, junior and senior Roadmarch competitions and J'ouvert; Statia's 2026 Carnival description similarly emphasized local and international shows and a concluding jump-up. In the British Virgin Islands, a June 2026 workshop brought twenty-four cultural practitioners and community members together to study fungi, its history and distinctions from neighboring band traditions.<ref name="saba2025">[https://www.sabatourism.com/events/list/?tribe-bar-date=2025-07-26 Saba Carnival Schedule 2025], Saba Tourist Bureau.</ref><ref name="statia2026">[https://www.statiagovernment.com/nieuwsoverzicht/artikel/statia-carnival Statia Carnival], Public Entity Sint Eustatius.</ref><ref name="fungi2026" />

== History ==
Inter-island musical history predates the modern festival industry. Anguilla's culture policy describes workers returning from sugar-estate employment in Cuba and the Dominican Republic with string-band influences, fife, banjo and accordion. Merengue was among the music they brought home. This history complicates any assumption that English-speaking islands developed only through English-language musical exchange.<ref name="anguillapolicy">[https://www.gov.ai/document/dyc/Culture_Policy_for_Anguilla.pdf Culture Policy for Anguilla], Government of Anguilla.</ref>

In St Croix, quelbe preserved local narratives and social dance while changing its instrumentation. Stanley Jacobs learned from cane-flute player Stanford Simmonds; over time, electric bass and modern wind instruments joined ensembles previously associated with homemade instruments. Jacobs and the Ten Sleepless Knights later made education and cultural transmission part of their organizational work.<ref name="stanleyjacobs">[https://www.arts.gov/honors/heritage/stanley-jacobs Stanley Jacobs], National Endowment for the Arts / Daniel Sheehy.</ref>

Calypso and soca developed a broad Caribbean circulation from their Trinidadian histories, but musicians elsewhere reshaped them. Burning Flames, associated with Potters in Antigua, connected local carnival to internationally touring band music. Their 1985 “Stylie Tight” breakthrough and earlier involvement with Montserratian Arrow's backing ensemble illustrate networks joining different islands through both recording and performance.<ref name="naliscalypso">[https://www.nalis.gov.tt/resources/tt-content-guide/calypso/ Calypso], National Library and Information System Authority, Trinidad and Tobago.</ref><ref name="burningflames2025">[https://www.carifesta.net/post/the-original-burning-flames-celebrate-40-years-of-soca-excellence The Original Burning Flames Celebrate 40 Years of Soca Excellence], CARIFESTA XV.</ref>

Saint Martin's two carnival calendars provide a further example of local distinctions within a shared island. The French-side 2025 programme placed drum parades and neighborhood events around the pre-Lenten season, while the Dutch-side carnival's concert programming included local Control Band alongside artists from Aruba, Haiti and Antigua.<ref name="stmartin2025">[https://www.kariculture.net/en/2025-st-martin-carnival-programme/ 2025 St. Martin Carnival Programme], Kariculture / Évelyne Chaville.</ref><ref name="sxmcarnival2025">[https://www.thedailyherald.sx/images/pdf/Apr-16-2025-CarnivalSpecial2025.pdf Carnival Special 2025], The Daily Herald.</ref>

== Genres ==
Calypso privileges the relationship of words, melodic delivery and an audience that recognizes topical references. Competition can reward storytelling, wit, social criticism and musical execution. Soca gives greater emphasis to collective dancing and the demands of fete and road performance, although many artists work across both categories. Antigua's junior and adult competitions explicitly cultivate separate calypso and soca pathways.<ref name="naliscalypso" /><ref name="antiguacarnival">[https://antiguacarnival.com/index.php/about/faqs Antigua Carnival: Frequently Asked Questions], Antigua Carnival.</ref><ref name="montserrat2025" />

Quelbe combines song with an identifiable ensemble texture. Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights' recordings place flute, banjo uke, gourd rasp and triangle alongside electric bass, keyboard, conga and drum kit. “Queen Mary” and “LaBega Carousel” carry St Croix history, while other pieces accompany quadrille. The addition of electricity does not remove the local musical identity.<ref name="quelbealbum" />

Fungi belongs to a closely connected Virgin Islands field, but local practitioners distinguish among fungi, quelbe and string-band forms. The British Virgin Islands' recent workshop explicitly addressed those distinctions. Reggae and dancehall likewise have active regional lives beyond Jamaican imports: Pressure Busspipe's career in the US Virgin Islands also crossed into soca with the 2019 recording “Do It And Done.”<ref name="fungi2026" /><ref name="pressure2019">[https://www.jamaicaobserver.com/2019/05/08/soca-comes-under-pressure/ Soca comes under pressure], Jamaica Observer.</ref>

The region's repertoire also includes chamber, orchestral, jazz and other concert music. St Barthélemy's January 2026 festival, primarily classical, closed with Brazilian bossa nova performer Will Santt. It provides a specific counterpoint to the carnival circuit within the same approved region.<ref name="stbarth2026" />

== Artists ==
Burning Flames is a central Antiguan band reference: its original lineup joined the Edwards brothers, Toriano, David and Clarence, with drummer Rone Watkins. Their forty-year celebration in 2025 emphasized a continuing regional career. For recent calypso, Ge'Eve's 2025 competition songs and De Bear's Montserrat performance offer contrasting voices within an art that remains responsive to its immediate audience.<ref name="burningflames2025" /><ref name="geeve2025" /><ref name="montserrat2025" />

Stanley Jacobs and the Ten Sleepless Knights' ''Quelbe!'' provides a substantial recorded introduction to Crucian scratch-band music. In the British Virgin Islands, the 2022 Fungi Fest documented Elmore Stoutt & Zion Sounds, Razor Bladez and DC Four Strong with saxophonist Kamau Georges. These ensembles locate the musical account in particular communities rather than treating all Virgin Islands traditions as one anonymous inheritance.<ref name="quelbealbum" /><ref name="fungifest2022">[https://www.bvibeacon.com/fungi-fest-returns-for-festival/ Fungi Fest returns for Festival], The BVI Beacon / Sariah Lake.</ref>

Pressure Busspipe's “Love and Affection” and “Do It And Done” offer a route between reggae and soca. Nu Vybes Band International, Honey Bees String Band and the St Kitts Steel Orchestra identify different kinds of ensemble within St Kitts's festival life. Control Band's inclusion in the 2025 St Maarten concert programme points to another locally established performance network. These examples are entry points into a dispersed region, not a ranking of its artists.<ref name="pressure2019" /><ref name="skfestival2025" /><ref name="skfestival2026" /><ref name="sxmcarnival2025" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved extent includes Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, Montserrat, the British and US Virgin Islands, Saint Martin/Sint Maarten, St Barthélemy, Saba and Sint Eustatius. It does not include every island geographically described as eastern Caribbean: Dominica, Saint Lucia, Guadeloupe and Martinique belong to the separate Creole Antilles definition, and Barbados, Saint Vincent and Grenada have another regional grouping.

The map uses island coastlines within a broad envelope. That envelope is an editorial device for collecting dispersed land areas, not an audience boundary across the sea. Calypso competition, touring and family or labor movement support connections among these islands, while language, governance and local institutions preserve substantial differences. Dated programmes establish actual cultural infrastructure and advertised activity; they do not supply comparable listener shares. Smaller island examples therefore remain specific rather than being assumed identical to Antigua, St Kitts or the Virgin Islands.
