== Summary ==
Detroit–Windsor is a connected metropolitan listening environment on both sides of the Detroit River. Soul and R&B, rock, hip-hop, country and adult pop make up a broad common listening layer. Motown familiarity and electronic dance music give the area particularly recognizable local affinities within that mixture. The surrounding developed suburbs belong in this account: municipal Detroit alone would exclude much of the shared metropolitan public. The international border is important to institutions and broadcasting, but it does not terminate the musical connections documented by local archives and community radio.<ref name="dw-crossborder">[https://detroitsound.org/rdi-collection/ #RecordDET Interviews], Detroit Sound Conservancy, collection description for interviews dated 2014–2017. == Contemporary and trending ==
Repeated Nielsen reporting periods from June through September 2026 show a broad Detroit radio public. Leading music audiences include country, familiar hits, adult contemporary and R&B, while rock, classic rock, current hip-hop, classic hip-hop and alternative stations also have recurring audiences. The result is a contemporary mixture in which familiar recordings and new releases circulate together.<ref name="dw-radio">[https://ratings.radio-online.com/content/arb011 Detroit Nielsen Audio ratings], Nielsen Audio, licensed publication by RADIO ONLINE, June–September 2026 columns. Station-audience shares are not population preference percentages and are not extended to Windsor.</ref>

Electronic music nevertheless remains a living part of the local environment. Detroit's 2025 public calendar listed Movement at Hart Plaza and the separate In Techno We Trust dance event.<ref name="dw-current">[https://detroitmi.gov/events/2025-movement-electronic-music-festival 2025 Movement Electronic Music Festival] and [https://detroitmi.gov/events/techno-we-trust In Techno We Trust], City of Detroit, 2025 event records. This supplies a current institutional connection between the two cities; programming alone does not establish how many residents listen.<ref name="dw-cjam">[https://www.cjam.ca/music/ Music], CJAM 99.1 FM, current campus/community-radio description, consulted October 18, 2026. == History ==
The metropolitan area's musical history includes the Motown recording enterprise and the soul repertoire with which it became associated. Detroit Historical Society identifies the label's songwriters, musicians and characteristic backbeat as part of the city's recorded-music history.<ref name="dw-motown">[https://www.detroithistorical.org/learn/online-research/encyclopedia-of-detroit/motown-records Motown Records], Detroit Historical Society, institutional historical account, consulted October 18, 2026.</ref> That production history is one part of the explanation, rather than evidence that all present residents principally listen to Motown.

Community memories also connect Detroit with jazz, rock, radio and clubs. Detroit Sound Conservancy's oral-history collection deliberately includes several of these worlds and the clubs of Windsor. The continuity is therefore more complicated than successive labels replacing one another: familiar soul, rock and dance repertoires remain available while new music and new publics emerge.<ref name="dw-crossborder" />

== Genres ==
A useful introduction combines R&B and soul, contemporary and familiar hip-hop, rock and classic rock, country and adult pop. Techno and related house/electronic dance listening deserve explicit attention because of their local history and continuing social settings, even though they are poorly represented by mainstream radio format categories.<ref name="dw-radio" /><ref name="dw-current" /> Jazz, classical and independent music add further listening worlds, including public and community radio. These are overlapping publics within the metropolitan area, not a division of its residents into fixed genres.

Compared with a generic Great Lakes profile, the combination of Detroit's soul and electronic affiliations, strong contemporary rock and country radio, and documented Windsor connections conveys useful local information. Much of the music is shared with Chicago, other Michigan communities, Ontario and the wider continent; the region does not claim exclusive ownership.

== Artists ==
The Motown catalogue offers such entry points as Smokey Robinson, the Temptations and Marvin Gaye. Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson belong to the account of Detroit techno, while J Dilla represents a different contribution to hip-hop rhythm and recorded sound.<ref name="dw-dilla">[https://detroitmi.gov/sites/detroitmi.localhost/files/events/2023-12/Def%20Sound%20Studio%20House%20Preliminary%20Report_HDAB.pdf Def Sound Studio House preliminary report], City of Detroit Historic Designation Advisory Board, 2023; historical account of J Dilla and the city's musical connections.</ref> Their work supplies several paths into the area's familiar musical histories and their continuing reinterpretation.

== Boundary definition and research ==
The working footprint combines the corrected United States 2020 Census '''Detroit, MI Urban Area''', UACE '''23824''', with Canada's 2021 '''Windsor population centre''', code '''1032'''. Each is a developed-settlement approximation that includes built-up suburbs. They are preferable to filling whole metropolitan counties or drawing a large circle around downtown.<ref name="dw-geography">[https://tigerweb.geo.census.gov/tigerwebmain/Files/bas25/tigerweb_bas25_ua_2020_tab20_us.html Urban Areas — Corrected — 2020 Census], United States Census Bureau, UACE 23824; [https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2021/dp-pd/prof/details/page.cfm?DGUIDlist=2021S05101032&Lang=E Windsor population centre, Census Profile 2021], Statistics Canada, DGUID 2021S05101032. The two national settlement definitions are similar practical proxies, not identical classification methods.</ref>

The combined outline is a MuGlobe interpretation of a documented cross-border environment. Its edges do not mark where people stop hearing Detroit music, and the reviewed United States radio figures do not measure Canadian listeners. Identity and cross-border circulation are well documented; comparative audience detail is substantially better on the United States side. Surrounding Great Lakes and southern Ontario regions continue to provide broader memberships.
