== Summary ==
The Deep South is a broad musical region in which blues, gospel, soul, country, rock and hip-hop have developed through connected but distinct communities. Black sacred and secular music is central to the account: Mississippi’s blues and Jackson recording industry, Alabama’s soul studios, Atlanta’s rap networks and coastal Gullah traditions are different expressions of that importance. The region cannot be reduced to a single rural blues sound. <ref name="malaco">[https://msbluestrail.org/blues-trail-markers/malaco-records Malaco Records], Mississippi Blues Commission.</ref><ref name="shoals">[https://encyclopediaofalabama.org/article/muscle-shoals-rhythm-section-msrs/ Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section], Encyclopedia of Alabama.</ref><ref name="outkast">[https://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/arts-culture/outkast/ OutKast], New Georgia Encyclopedia.</ref><ref name="ranky">[https://www.rankytanky.com/about About Ranky Tanky], Ranky Tanky.</ref>

Its musical geography includes studios that serve visiting artists, congregations and singing conventions, metropolitan recording businesses and local dance or performance communities. These forms overlap without becoming identical. A Sacred Harp gathering in Alabama and a Charleston Gullah-based jazz ensemble both connect music to community, for example, but organize sound, participation and repertoire differently. <ref name="ivey">[https://www.arts.gov/honors/heritage/david-ivey David Ivey], National Endowment for the Arts.</ref><ref name="ranky" />

Ranky Tanky’s ''This Village'', dated July 2026 in the group’s own account, brings new compositions and arrangements into its Gullah-rooted repertoire. The Charleston quintet combines voices, trumpet, guitar, bass and percussion; inherited material becomes the basis for continuing creative work. This is a specific living project within the coastal South, not a proxy for every coastal listener’s preference. <ref name="ranky" />

Alabama’s documented apprenticeship and singing-school networks offer another model of renewal. David Ivey and Jeff Sheppard established Camp Fasola to teach Sacred Harp to new participants, with learners travelling from beyond the region. At the commercial end of the spectrum, Atlanta’s recent recording generation includes Latto, whose ''Sugar Honey Iced Tea'' appeared in 2024. The simultaneous presence of community singing, regional-rooted ensembles and contemporary rap is essential to the modern musical picture. <ref name="ivey" /><ref name="latto2024">[https://www.axios.com/2024/08/14/latto-sugar-honey-iced-tea-tour-tickets Latto announces Sugar Honey Iced Tea Tour], Axios.</ref>

== History ==
Recording centres transformed regional practices into widely circulating popular music. In northwestern Alabama, the musicians later known as the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section worked across soul and country-related idioms. Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman” and sessions involving Wilson Pickett illustrate how a recognizably regional performance approach could reach national listeners through professional studios and record companies. The achievement depended on musicians, engineers and arrangements as well as the featured singer. <ref name="shoals" />

Jackson’s Malaco provides a complementary history. Established as a studio in 1967, it became associated with southern soul, blues and gospel, including Dorothy Moore’s “Misty Blue” and Z. Z. Hill’s ''Down Home''. Atlanta’s OutKast and associated production community later asserted a distinct Southern presence in hip-hop. These developments belong to different periods and markets, but each shows local networks shaping music that travels far beyond the region. <ref name="malaco" /><ref name="outkast" />

== Genres ==
Southern soul combines blues-related expression with arranged accompaniment and a strong vocal focus; its recordings should not be treated as identical to solo acoustic blues. Malaco’s history places soul and blues alongside a substantial gospel catalogue. Sacred practice itself is varied: Alabama documentation includes gospel quartets, choirs, hymn singing, bluegrass gospel, psalm singing and shape-note traditions, each with its own performance conventions. <ref name="malaco" /><ref name="al-sacred">[https://arts.alabama.gov/traditional_culture/folkwaysarticles/VOICESRAISED.aspx Voices Raised, Singing Praise: Two Centuries of Sacred Sounds in Alabama], Alabama State Council on the Arts.</ref>

Sacred Harp singers arrange themselves by voice part in a hollow square and take turns leading. The name refers to a singing tradition and songbook, not the use of a harp. Gullah-rooted contemporary performance can draw on spirituals, work songs and children’s songs while arranging them for a professional ensemble. Hip-hop adds a different set of vocal, rhythmic and studio practices. These distinctions matter more than a generalized claim that all Southern music shares one rhythm or emotional character. <ref name="ivey" /><ref name="ranky" /><ref name="outkast" />

== Artists ==
Percy Sledge and the Muscle Shoals players exemplify the relationship between a distinctive singer and a skilled backing ensemble. Dorothy Moore, Z. Z. Hill, Denise LaSalle and the Mississippi Mass Choir open different parts of the Malaco catalogue. Their inclusion is not a claim that every performer was born at the studio’s location: a regional recording centre attracts and connects musicians whose lives extend across several places. <ref name="shoals" /><ref name="malaco" />

OutKast’s André 3000 and Big Boi represent a formative Atlanta partnership, while Latto belongs to a later generation. Ranky Tanky makes the collective nature of contemporary coastal music especially visible through Quiana Parler, Charlton Singleton, Clay Ross, Kevin Hamilton and Quentin Baxter. Sacred Harp leaders and participants illustrate another kind of authorship, in which maintaining an open singing practice is as significant as an individual commercial release. <ref name="outkast" /><ref name="latto2024" /><ref name="ranky" /><ref name="ivey" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved Deep South frame covers Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. It is broader than some everyday or historical definitions of “Deep South,” particularly in including all of North Carolina. Here it serves as a large regional overview with overlapping, more specific articles for the Mississippi Delta, Atlanta, Piedmont and Appalachia. It does not make state borders into sharp musical divisions.

Coastal Gullah traditions, mountain communities, Black Belt towns and large metropolitan areas have different histories within this outline. The examples establish documented musical relationships and active projects, not measured proportions of statewide listening. Country, rock, pop and many immigrant and Indigenous practices also occur within the frame; the region’s identity is a layered set of networks, rather than an exhaustive genre list or an assertion of cultural uniformity.
