Summary
The Colombian–Ecuadorian Pacific is a cross-border musical region of coastal lowlands and river communities west of the Andes. Afro-Pacific marimba, communal singing and dance are especially strong identifiers in southern Colombia and Ecuador's Esmeraldas province. The music accompanies devotion, celebrations, remembrance and everyday family life, with learning carried through community relationships. It belongs to a social world wider than the stage or recording studio.

The region is internally diverse. Northern Pacific chirimía ensembles associated with Chocó use clarinets and percussion, while some Cauca river communities maintain flute-centred chirimías. Those sounds should not be collapsed into the southern marimba tradition. Contemporary artists also work with salsa, rap, electronic production and popular song. Goyo's trajectory from Condoto and ChocQuibTown into solo recording illustrates how Pacific identity can travel through international urban music as well as heritage performance.

Contemporary and trending
Cali's Petronio Álvarez festival remains an important meeting point for musicians from this region and its diaspora. Its 2025 selection process reached Esmeraldas, while the competition distinguished marimba and traditional song, flute chirimía, clarinet chirimía, Caucano violin and open-format groups. The categories make internal differences visible within a shared public event. Patacoré won the marimba category; Timbisón, formed in Cali by musicians and singers from Timbiquí communities, won flute chirimía. Nidia Góngora was honoured and performed with Quantic and Canalón de Timbiquí.

Local institutions operate on the Ecuadorian side too: Esmeraldas's municipal record documents a Petita Palma festival in August 2025. Recent experimentation is not confined to major stars. Radio Nacional's 2025 profile of Ajústala describes northern Pacific clarinet, tambora and a reduced drum kit combined with electronics. Goyo's Pantera (2025) follows another path, drawing on African-diaspora sounds and collaborations with artists including Afro B and Zaider. These examples demonstrate distinct creative choices, rather than one uniform new “Pacific sound.”

History
The coastal repertoire reflects African-descended communities' histories and their interactions with Indigenous peoples and Hispanic colonial culture. The southern Pacific liner notes to Grupo Naidy's Smithsonian recording describe both sacred and secular forms and caution that the broad label currulao covers a more varied musical field. Historical recordings from western Colombia and Ecuador already document different settings for marimba dance and devotional arrullo.

Transmission depends on people and materials as well as melodies. Marimba makers in Esmeraldas include figures documented by Ecuador's heritage institute such as Guillermo Ayoví, Papá Roncón, and Juan Carlos Garcés in Borbón. In Timbiquí, teacher Elizabeth Sinisterra used local verse and song in education; the history of Canalón de Timbiquí connects her work with family learning and later performance by singers including Nidia Góngora.

Migration and displacement have also relocated traditions. Timbisón's 2025 festival profile describes musicians from Timbiquí communities forming an ensemble in Cali to sustain memory after forced displacement. Cultural continuity can therefore involve recreating a community network in a city, not simply remaining in an ancestral village.

Genres
The marimba's wooden keys and resonating tubes produce interlocking melodic and rhythmic patterns within an ensemble of voices and percussion. Ecuador's heritage institute identifies bombo, cununos, guasá and maracas among the accompanying instruments. Currulao joins music and dance, but the larger repertoire also contains devotional and commemorative forms with different purposes. Juga, bunde, alabao and canto de boga are among the distinct southern Pacific categories identified in the Smithsonian liner notes; the presence of these names should discourage treating every coastal song as an interchangeable dance track.

Chirimía changes the instrumental balance. In the Río Napi tradition, flute ensembles differ from Chocó's clarinet-led sound, a distinction important enough to shape debates about festival competition. Salsa choke represents another coastal connection: Radio Nacional's historical account locates its formation in Tumaco around 2004–05, before wider circulation through Cali. These genres coexist with studio-based pop and rap; they are not successive stages in which the newer necessarily displaces the older.

South America detailed revision
Chirimía chocoana gives the northern Pacific wind-and-percussion world a specific gateway, and Salsa choke identifies contemporary Tumaco–Cali production. Currulao retains its southern Pacific and Esmeraldas landscape. These distinctions prevent a single marimba label from standing for the entire Pacific.

South America detailed revision
Ecuador’s Esmeraldas marimba-and-voice traditions remain within this cross-border Pacific landscape. Bomba del Chota identifies a separate northern highland Afro-Ecuadorian practice, with its own instruments, communities and regional selection.

Grupo Naidy's ¡Arriba Suena Marimba! is a useful documented introduction to experienced women singers and marimba-percussion ensemble music. Its programme includes “El botellón,” “Pango” and “Vamos a adorar a Antonio,” offering different lyrical and functional entry points. Herencia de Timbiquí's “Te invito,” from Tambó (2011), is identified by Radio Nacional as an aguabajo and provides another route into arranged contemporary song rooted in the Pacific.

On the Ecuadorian side, Papá Roncón's importance includes instrument-making knowledge in Borbón, a reminder that musical creators are not only vocal stars. Canalón de Timbiquí similarly embodies collective work: teachers, singers and successive generations sustain its repertoire. Goyo offers a contrasting recorded trajectory. A singer, rapper and producer from a musical family in Condoto, she co-founded ChocQuibTown and later developed solo work including Pantera. Taken together, these practitioners reveal the region through community knowledge, composed songs, instruments and production, without assigning any one artist the task of representing all its peoples.

Boundary definition and research
The approved outline follows the Pacific lowlands of Colombia and northwestern Ecuador, broadly west of the Andean ridge. It includes northern and southern coastal settings and a small mapped supplement at the Esmeraldas river mouth. The inland edge is an approximate transition rather than a surveyed musical border. Cali is a crucial circulation hub and is linked through the overlapping Cali–Valle region, even though much of the repertoire discussed here has riverine and coastal homes elsewhere.

The 2015 UNESCO inscription concerns southern Colombia and Esmeraldas specifically; it cannot by itself justify extending the marimba description throughout Chocó or every place in the broader polygon. Evidence for northern chirimía and contemporary urban work is therefore considered separately. The map represents connected practices and movements of people, not measured audience shares, exclusive Afro-descendant occupancy or a denial of the many Indigenous and other musical worlds within the same geography.
