Summary
Chad–Central Sahel describes Chad's broad musical mixture across an important northern–southern transition. Chadian pop, saï, Arabic-language song, Afropop, rap and local dance music connect through towns, performance circuits and recorded exchange. The region's value lies in recognizing that mixture, not in claiming that a single musical style unites all communities.

N'Djamena is an important point of circulation, but the national frame also includes regional and cross-border relationships. Chadian artists have worked with Central African, Sudanese and wider African resources, while migration has extended musical activity into other countries. The approved profile remains provisional because contemporary local listening is documented unevenly.

Contemporary and trending
Hip-hop is an established part of the country's popular-music conversation. Music In Africa's overview discusses rap in relation to youth expression and the wider sounds of reggae and ragga. Its account is useful for understanding a scene rather than assuming that all commercially visible Chadian music follows one older dance-band model.

A specialist Afrisson selection published in 2020 places rappers Mawndoe, Crazy Missy and Obie-G alongside Afrotronix's electronic work and other popular forms. The juxtaposition documents diversity across an extended recent period, not a current ranking. Afrotronix is particularly useful for seeing how a Chadian-connected artist can participate in a transnational electronic scene without abandoning the relevance of home.

Mounira Mitchala's profile supplies another contemporary orientation through songwriting concerned with social experience. Her work belongs to the popular field while drawing on regional rhythmic resources, showing that social commentary need not take the form of rap alone.

History
The recorded history includes dance bands, guitar-led song and later studio approaches. Afrisson's historical selection begins with Maître Gazonga's rumba-associated work and continues through folk-oriented singers, gospel-connected groups and electronic production. This sequence is best heard as an accumulation of possibilities rather than proof that each genre replaced the previous one.

Abdoulaye Nderguet and Tibesti provide an important ensemble route. Local reporting discusses his work with the group and his interest in combining Chadian musical resources with other styles. The name of a musical synthesis can travel farther than its detailed local history, so a national overview should preserve the performers and circumstances behind it.

The history also involves careers made partly abroad. That movement affects opportunities to record, tour and reach new publics, but it does not automatically make an overseas release more representative than music heard at a local gathering. The regional account needs both working musicians and documented recordings to avoid substituting export visibility for everyday musical life.

Genres
Saï is included in the accepted profile as a Chadian popular form drawing on southern rhythmic resources. It should not be stretched into a label for all music of southern Chad, much less the whole country's dance music. Arabic-language song and guitar traditions connect other parts of the mixture with neighboring musical worlds.

Rumba, Afropop, rap, reggae-related forms and electronic music supply additional approaches to voice, rhythm and arrangement. H'Sao's place in the specialist selection is described through gospel and Chadian roots, while Afrotronix points toward electronic performance. These contrasting examples make it clear that national belonging does not determine a compulsory instrumental sound.

Repertoire distinctions
Dala — Dala is a southern Chadian dance rhythm and a basis for modern guitar-led popular music. Ingamadji Mujos identifies it explicitly as a southern dance that he adapted to guitar. Its documented musical geography connects the Logone landscape with Chadian urban and migrant networks.

Saï — Saï is a southern Chadian celebratory musical and dance identity that also names a strand of modern Chadian band music. Its modern history is closely associated with Tibesti, whose name should not relocate the repertoire to the northern mountain massif. The ensemble's own account places its source material among southern peoples.

Toubou lute music — Toubou lute music denotes the plucked-lute repertoire known through such instrument names as Teda keleli and Daza cegeni, also transcribed tchegueni. It is a repertoire category within the larger musical worlds of Toubou communities, not a name for every Toubou song, drum ensemble or dance. Catherine Baroin's comparative ethnography distinguishes local names and practices, including a Kreda terminology exception.

Toupouri gourna — Toupouri gourna is a sung, drummed and danced repertoire associated with a wider social institution in the Chad–Cameroon borderlands. The musical entry concerns that repertoire and its changing performance life; gourna cannot be reduced to a free-standing beat. Ethnomusicological analysis identifies continually renewed texts and a distinctive relationship between chorus, soloist and rhythmic organization.

Additional regional repertoire
Rongondo is explained in Dala as an artist-associated name linked to Saint Mbété Bao; the available evidence does not establish a separate regional genre distribution.

The linked genre articles document the evidence, source-access limits and geographic interpretation.

Artists
Maître Gazonga's Les Jaloux Saboteurs is a named route into an older popular repertoire. Mounira Mitchala, Melodji and Béral Mbazikoubou offer other song-centered approaches in Afrisson's selection, while H'Sao places collective vocal work in the picture. The selection is a curated historical guide rather than a complete canon.

Abdoulaye Nderguet's association with Tibesti directs attention to ensemble work and the crafting of a musical language across influences. Mounira Mitchala's profile emphasizes her role as singer and songwriter rather than simply as a carrier of anonymous tradition. Listening across these artists is more informative than trying to identify one musician who represents every Chadian community.

Boundary definition and research
The accepted outline follows Chad and its northern–southern transition. It is a broad frame for a diverse listening mixture, not a cultural partition of the central Sahel. Connections with Sudan, Cameroon, Central Africa and diaspora communities continue beyond the map edge; the national reference line is a navigation aid rather than a measured musical threshold.

Direct evidence is strongest here for particular artists, the hip-hop scene and a curated history of recordings. It is weaker for comparative present-day listening in rural districts and smaller towns. The region therefore retains its provisional designation. Further research should add specific local practices and media circuits without assuming that the least documented communities have no contemporary musical life.
