== Summary ==
The Cayman Islands' music brings together a distinctive fiddle-led kitchen-band tradition, locally produced soca, reggae, gospel, country music and a varied concert life. Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman belong to a small but outward-looking musical region whose traditions have developed through Caribbean and Atlantic connections. Kitchen music supplies an especially identifiable local sound, combining fiddle melody with guitar and percussive instruments such as a grater.<ref name="swankyloc">[https://blogs.loc.gov/folklife/2024/11/homegrown-plus-the-swanky-kitchen-band/ Homegrown Plus: The Swanky Kitchen Band], Library of Congress / American Folklife Center.</ref><ref name="swankycentrum">[https://centrum.org/faculty-profile/name/swanky-band/ Swanky Kitchen Band — Faculty Profile], Centrum.</ref><ref name="caymanpolicy">[https://parliament.ky/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/12436454.pdf Safeguarding our heritage, living our culture: National Culture and Heritage Policy and Strategic Plan 2017–2026], Cayman Islands Government.</ref>

The wider scene cannot be reduced to that heritage genre. Recent reporting documents carnival songwriting, reggae-and-jazz arrangements, steel pan, folk singing and gospel collaborations. These are overlapping musical activities, supported by performers who may move between bands, educational work and festival stages.<ref name="caymansoca2025">[https://www.caymancompass.com/2025/07/04/reigning-soca-monarch-returns-with-music-for-the-road/ Reigning soca monarch returns with music for the road], Cayman Compass / Shanda Gallego.</ref><ref name="caymanfestival2025">[https://www.caymancompass.com/2025/01/30/music-music-and-more-music/ Music, music and more music], Cayman Compass / sponsored Cayman Arts Festival feature.</ref><ref name="caymanredsky">[https://www.caymancompass.com/2025/03/27/red-sky-at-night-celebrates-the-best-of-arts-and-culture/ Red Sky at Night celebrates the best of arts and culture], Cayman Compass / Shanda Gallego.</ref>

In July 2025, Jason “JG” Gilbert, performing as Skorch Bun It, released “For the Love” during the CayMAS season. The previous year's Soca Monarch described a song about the commitment of musicians, organizers and masqueraders, with collaborators including Darryl Gervais, Christopher Seymour and Lammie Seymour. This documents a local production network as well as participation in a wider Caribbean genre.<ref name="caymansoca2025" />

The March 2025 Red Sky at Night festival presented the Cayman Folk Singers, UCCI Pandemix Steel Pan Band and local bands and singers including Heat, Madam Nirosa and Swanky Kitchen Band. That mixture placed heritage performance and contemporary entertainment on connected stages.<ref name="caymanredsky" />

Concert programming supplies another perspective. The 2025 Cayman Arts Festival advertised Beneil Miller's all-local Reggae Orchestra alongside classical, cabaret and gospel events. In October 2026, its website advertised Marlon Cortes's forthcoming ''Hymns Reimagined'' piano recital at George Town Public Library, explicitly connecting familiar hymn melodies with jazz. The latter is an announced programme, not a claim that the performance had already occurred.<ref name="caymanfestival2025" /><ref name="caymanarts">[https://caymanartsfestival.com/ Cayman Arts Festival / CayMusicA], Cayman Arts Festival / CayMusicA.</ref>

== History ==
Kitchen-band music developed from encounters between European-associated fiddle traditions and African-derived rhythm and dance. Its social setting included gatherings around detached kitchens, where household tools became musical instruments. The Cayman culture policy also identifies narrative ballads, sea shanties, launching songs and a locally adapted quadrille, showing how music accompanied work and social life.<ref name="swankycentrum" /><ref name="caymanpolicy" />

Revival has required active reconstruction. Samuel Rose and his collaborators formed Swanky Kitchen Band in 2003; in a Library of Congress interview he explained that recordings of Radley Gourzong and the Happy Boys were essential because direct apprenticeship opportunities had largely disappeared. Recorded memory, rather than an uninterrupted line of lessons, helped younger musicians rebuild the repertoire.<ref name="swankyloc" />

Country-and-western music has also held a place in Cayman listening, according to the national cultural policy. More formal concert infrastructure expanded through Cayman Arts Festival, incorporated in 2003 with education among its purposes. Its subsequent activities include after-school provision and additional concerts outside the original festival period, connecting audience development with practical training.<ref name="caymanpolicy" /><ref name="caymanarts" />

== Genres ==
Kitchen dance music places a prominent fiddle line over a textured rhythmic accompaniment. The scraping grater contributes a dry, insistent pulse, while guitar, drums and other instruments fill out the groove. The tradition includes songs about local lives as well as dance tunes, so its narrative and instrumental sides belong together.<ref name="swankycentrum" />

Soca in Cayman is closely linked to carnival performance and songs intended for collective movement. Gilbert's discussion of “For the Love” describes building from chords and melody, then finding a suitable tempo, with a faster version also released. This production detail makes clear that local soca is composed and arranged for particular experiences of the road and fete.<ref name="caymansoca2025" />

Reggae, jazz and gospel have distinct settings but can meet in arranged concert work. Beneil Miller's orchestra was presented as a reggae–jazz fusion; the 2025 festival also paired the visiting Mark De-Lisser Singers with the First Baptist Church Choir. These examples indicate musical exchange among local and visiting practitioners, rather than treating each genre as a sealed community.<ref name="caymanfestival2025" />

== Artists ==
Swanky Kitchen Band makes the kitchen tradition accessible through contemporary ensemble performance. Fiddler Samuel Rose and guitarist Nicholas Johnson are central to its revival; Paula Scott's grater playing brings family connections to Cayman Brac into the group. Bassist Lammie Seymour also founded Memory of Justice, linking different generations and settings of Cayman popular music.<ref name="swankycentrum" />

Radley Gourzong and the Happy Boys are important historical listening references because their recordings informed that revival. The Library of Congress's 2024 concert and interview documentation records both the music and the musicians' account of how it was recovered. A July 2025 Centrum programme paired Swanky with Louisiana performers, placing the Cayman fiddle tradition in conversation with another dance-music culture.<ref name="swankyloc" /><ref name="swanky2025">[https://centrum.org/event/creole-and-cayman-island-dance-party/ Creole & Cayman Island Dance Party], Centrum.</ref>

Skorch Bun It's ''Stadium Music'' and “For the Love” offer recent carnival-oriented entry points. Beneil Miller's Reggae Orchestra, the Cayman Folk Singers and the UCCI Pandemix Steel Pan Band broaden the listening field. Their different ensemble formats show why musicianship, arranging and community performance are as useful to this region's portrait as a list of solo recording stars.<ref name="caymansoca2025" /><ref name="caymanfestival2025" /><ref name="caymanredsky" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved region covers Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Their coastlines define the map area; the outline does not suggest that musical exchange stops there. Kitchen-band history and family connections provide one regional link, while carnival, visiting performers and overseas teaching appearances connect the islands to other musical centers.

The inventory retains a provisional evidence designation because comparable contemporary listening data are limited. Fresh local reporting strengthens the account of actual performers and events, but cannot establish market shares for reggae, soca, country, gospel or pop. The article therefore describes documented practices rather than ranking them. Sources based on a festival's own promotion establish its advertised programme, and historical cultural-policy statements are not presented as a new audience survey.
