== Summary ==
Catalan–Balearic brings together Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Andorra and adjoining French Catalan territory as a broad musical region. Catalan-language song creates important connections across this geography, but it coexists with Spanish-language pop, multilingual performance, electronic music and locally distinctive traditions. Neither language nor musical practice is uniform across the footprint.

Barcelona's rumba catalana and Ibiza's cant pagès illustrate two very different local histories. A Barcelona community exhibition situates rumba in Catalan Gitano creativity, while the Càntut project documents efforts to preserve and present Ibiza's traditional singing.<ref name="rumba">[https://ajuntament.barcelona.cat/ccivics/bonpastor/p/57389/exposici-rumba-catalana-gitana-i-catalana Rumba catalana: gitana i catalana], Ajuntament de Barcelona / Associació Carabutsí.</ref><ref name="cantut">[https://www.cantut.cat/festival/programacio/eivissa-tresor-pages Eivissa, tresor pagès], Càntut.</ref> Their inclusion in one region makes those differences available for comparison without turning them into a single shared style.

The 2025 Enderrock awards provide a dated view of the Catalan-language recording field. The critics selected Maria Jaume's ''Nostàlgia Airlines'' as album of the year and recognised Figa Flawas through ''La calçotada''. The wider awards also brought attention to Oques Grasses and Mushka.<ref name="critics">[https://www.enderrock.cat/noticia/28981/maria-jaume-figa-flawas-oques-grasses-guanyen-premis-enderrock-2025-critica Maria Jaume, Figa Flawas i Oques Grasses guanyen els Premis Enderrock 2025 de la crítica], Enderrock, award organiser, 2025.</ref><ref name="winners">[https://www.enderrock.cat/noticia/29273/premis-enderrock-2025-guanyadors Premis Enderrock 2025: els guanyadors], Enderrock, 2025.</ref> Critics' decisions and public voting represent particular forms of recognition, not equivalent measures of population-wide listening.

Established performers continue to make new work. Maria del Mar Bonet's ''L'aigua no cansa'', presented in 2026, contains new studio recordings rather than a retrospective compilation. Her announced May presentation at Barcelona's Palau de la Música marked sixty years of performance.<ref name="bonetnew">[https://mariadelmarbonet.com/en/event/presentacio-del-nou-disc-laigua-no-cansa-60-anys-de-cancons/ Presentació del nou disc: L’Aigua no cansa, 60 anys de cançons], Maria del Mar Bonet, May 23, 2026 programme.</ref>

Andorra's 2025 Jambo programme combined visiting performers with local musicians, including the farewell appearance of Vª Columna.<ref name="jambo">[https://www.andorralavella.ad/serveis/noticies/com%C3%BA?page=3 Ramon Mirabet encapçala un Jambo 2025 ple de talent local i amb l’adéu de Vª Columna], Comú d’Andorra la Vella, 2025 announcement.</ref> Ibiza's April 2026 International Music Summit, meanwhile, convened the electronic-music industry at Cala Llonga.<ref name="ims">[https://www.internationalmusicsummit.com/news/ims-ibiza-essential-delegate-info-2026 IMS Ibiza: essential delegate information 2026], International Music Summit.</ref> These events show how different parts of the region participate in distinct performance and professional circuits.

== History ==
Nova Cançó developed as a renewal of Catalan-language popular song under the Franco dictatorship. The Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana describes the importance of the Edigsa label and the movement's wider effort to sustain public Catalan cultural expression.<ref name="nova">[https://www.enciclopedia.cat/gran-enciclopedia-catalana/nova-canco Nova Cançó], Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana.</ref> Its history joins language, authorship, recording and political circumstances rather than identifying one fixed musical arrangement.

Maria del Mar Bonet's own discographic account traces her entry through her brother Joan Ramon Bonet and Barcelona's Els Setze Jutges network. It records a joint 1967 recital with Lluís Llach and Rafael Subirachs under the name Novíssima Cançó.<ref name="bonethistory">[https://mariadelmarbonet.com/album/menorca/ Cançons de Menorca], Maria del Mar Bonet.</ref> This is a concrete connection between Mallorca and mainland song networks.

Rumba catalana followed another trajectory. The community-based exhibition ''Rumba catalana: gitana i catalana'' describes a form arising in the 1950s and entering the recording world strongly in the 1960s. Its materials foreground Gitano memory and social history.<ref name="rumba" /> These overlapping histories should not be folded into an account in which only literary singer-songwriters define modern regional music.

== Genres ==
Catalan-language pop encompasses different contemporary approaches. The Enderrock awards place Maria Jaume, Figa Flawas, Oques Grasses and Mushka within the same broad public musical field while recognising distinct works and categories.<ref name="critics" /><ref name="winners" /> Sharing a language does not make their arrangements, influences or audiences identical.

Rumba catalana has a particularly identifiable relationship between guitar and rhythm. Barcelona's ''Al son del barri'' activities teach palmas, percussion and the guitar technique known as ventilador alongside the genre's history.<ref name="rumbaactivities">[https://ajuntament.barcelona.cat/jovesbarcelona/gracia/en/detail/festival-al-son-del-barri-setmana-de-la-rumba-i-el-flamenc-a-bon-pastor-i-baro-de-viver_99400760393 Al son del barri: setmana de la rumba i el flamenc], Ajuntament de Barcelona.</ref> Such workshops demonstrate transmission through practical participation as well as records.

Island music includes both inherited song and international electronic networks. Càntut's ''Eivissa, tresor pagès'' presentation concerns a vulnerable local singing tradition; the International Music Summit addresses a global electronic-music industry.<ref name="cantut" /><ref name="ims" /> These coexistences matter: Ibiza's club reputation does not exhaust its musical culture, and the presence of a local tradition does not describe all contemporary island listening.

Maria del Mar Bonet provides a route from the Nova Cançó era to a current recording career through ''L'aigua no cansa''.<ref name="bonethistory" /><ref name="bonetnew" /> Maria Jaume's ''Nostàlgia Airlines'' and Figa Flawas' ''La calçotada'' offer more recent award-recognised entry points, with the distinction that the 2025 awards concern already released work.<ref name="critics" />

Spanish-language pop also belongs in this regional picture. Aitana's ''Cuarto Azul'', announced for May 2025, includes “6 de Febrero”, “Segundo Intento” and “Sentimiento Natural”, the latter with Myke Towers.<ref name="aitana">[https://universalmusic.es/aitana-anuncia-cuarto-azul-su-nuevo-album-de-estudio-disponible-el-30-mayo/ Aitana anuncia Cuarto Azul], Universal Music Spain, May 9, 2025.</ref> This example connects a Catalan artist with a much wider Spanish-language public rather than making language borders absolute.

The Jambo programme's Vª Columna farewell supplies an Andorran band example, while Càntut's Ibiza project offers a route into traditional singing and its documentation.<ref name="jambo" /><ref name="cantut" /> These starting points open different repertoires and performance settings; they are not a definitive regional canon.

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved boundary combines Catalonia's provinces, the Balearic Islands, Andorra and Pyrénées-Orientales. Administrative edges are practical approximations. The broader geography of Catalan-language culture extends beyond this footprint, notably into Valencia, whose provinces appear in MuGlobe's Iberian Interior region. The present outline should therefore not be mistaken for a comprehensive language map.

Research draws on awards documentation, community heritage work, an encyclopaedic history, artist release notes and dated programmes. Coverage is strongest for Catalonia and the islands; Andorra is represented through its own public programme, while the French borderland is less fully documented here. The article describes connections and contrasts supported by these examples. It does not infer a common musical preference for every resident or use festival attendance and awards as interchangeable measures of popularity.
