== Summary ==
Belarus has a musical landscape of Belarusian- and Russian-language songs, rock, electronic music and locally transmitted repertoires, connected through institutions and audiences both within and beyond the country. Naviband's Belarusian-language pop and Molchat Doma's Russian-language post-punk are contrasting examples. Neither language alone determines whether a performer belongs to Belarusian musical life, and neither internationally visible act represents all local listening. <ref name="f1">[https://www.eurovision.com/eurovision-song-contest/kyiv-2017/participants/naviband-1/ Naviband: Kyiv 2017 participant], European Broadcasting Union.</ref><ref name="f2">[https://iaspmjournal.net/index.php/IASPM_Journal/article/download/1435/2031/10507 What truth are you telling me about? Traditional music also operates in different settings. At Pahost, the spring rite of Juraŭski Karahod places songs within agricultural and community actions. Troitsa instead brings inherited songs and instruments into a concert ensemble, drawing on Ivan Kirchuk's collecting and teaching experience. These are related forms of cultural knowledge with different functions and audiences. <ref name="f3">[https://ich.unesco.org/en/USL/spring-rite-of-juraski-karahod-01458?USL=01458 Spring rite of Juraŭski Karahod], UNESCO.</ref><ref name="f4">[https://troitsa.net/index.php?Itemid=43&id=23&option=com_content&task=blogcategory Troitsa: History], Troitsa.</ref>

Repression and relocation are essential to the contemporary geography. PEN Belarus's monitoring describes censorship, restrictions on events and prosecutions affecting musicians and other cultural workers. Releases made abroad remain part of Belarusian musical circulation, while public visibility within the country cannot be assumed to measure free audience choice. <ref name="f5">[https://penbelarus.org/en/2026/02/13/manitoryng-parushennyau-kulturnyh-pravou-i-pravou-chalaveka-u-dachynenni-da-dzeyachau-kultury-belarus-2025-god.html Monitoring of violations of cultural rights and human rights of cultural figures: Belarus, 2025], PEN Belarus.</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==
Shuma's ''Bahna'' is a recent example of electronic music engaging with inherited song. The artists describe the EP through memory and the search for home in exile, combining rhythmic electronic textures with Belarusian chants associated with rain, crops, winter processions and spring. Their project is presented from Warsaw. These themes express the creators' artistic framing, rather than proving that a modern dance production reproduces an unchanged ancient rite. <ref name="f6">[https://shumaduo.bandcamp.com/album/bahna Bahna], Shuma.</ref>

Molchat Doma's fourth album, ''Belaya Polosa'', appeared in September 2024. The label describes it as completed after relocation from Minsk to Los Angeles, with synthesisers, drum machines and reverberant guitar expanding the group's earlier sound. The record connects the continuing Belarusian history of its makers to an international recording and touring career. <ref name="f7">[https://www.sacredbonesrecords.com/products/sbr345-molchat-doma-belaya-polosa Molchat Doma: Belaya Polosa], Sacred Bones Records.</ref>

Naviband's own catalogue lists ''Adliga'' as a 2025 album, demonstrating continued recording beyond its Eurovision-era repertoire. Against this activity, PEN Belarus's 2025 monitoring records the detention of musicians including Palac's Aleh Chamienka and Stary Olsa's Aleś Čumakoŭ. These dated reports explain constraints on the scene; they should not be converted into undated claims about any person's current legal status. <ref name="f8">[https://naviband.myshopify.com/ Naviband: Adliga (2025)], Naviband official store.</ref><ref name="f5" />

== History ==
The relationship between inherited songs and modern ensembles predates today's electronic revival. The Russian State Library's catalogue preserves a Melodiya concert recording by Pesnyary, led by Vladimir Mulyavin, including arrangements of Belarusian folk songs. Such recordings demonstrate how ensemble performance and commercial media could circulate regional repertoire well beyond the original occasions on which songs were learned. <ref name="f9">[https://search.rsl.ru/ru/record/01008168274 Pesnyary: concert recording, Melodiya], Russian State Library.</ref>

Troitsa emerged from another combination of experience. Its official history describes rehearsals bringing together Kirchuk's folklore work and musicians with rock backgrounds in the mid-1990s, followed by formation in 1996. Early cassette recordings helped open festival opportunities, including appearances in Russia and the Netherlands. Folklore research, alternative performance and international exchange were therefore intertwined in the group's development. <ref name="f4" />

Music acquired renewed public significance during the 2020 protests. Libbie Katsev's scholarly study examines the different political allegories of Molchat Doma's ''Ne Smeshno'' and the satirical ''Shchuchynshchyna''. The analysis shows that a song need not state a direct political slogan to gain political meaning through its video, setting and reception. It also cautions against simple assumptions that pop and rock always carry opposing social roles. <ref name="f2" />

== Genres ==
Community song can be inseparable from seasonal action. At Pahost's Juraŭski Karahod, participants carry ceremonial bread and other objects into the fields; women's singing and a circular formation accompany wishes for the harvest. UNESCO identifies ageing and local socioeconomic pressures among the threats to transmission. A heritage listing acknowledges the need for care, not nationwide popularity. <ref name="f3" />

Troitsa's arrangements use voices and a varied instrumental palette. The credits for ''Zimachka'' (2011) include Kirchuk's pipes, gusli, smyk and domra alongside guitar and percussion contributions. The group's work offers an ensemble-based encounter with traditional materials, distinct from Shuma's electronically organised dance settings. <ref name="f10">[https://troitsa.net/ja_eng/index.php?Itemid=30&id=67&option=com_content&task=view Zimachka 2011], Troitsa.</ref><ref name="f6" />

Post-punk and synth-pop provide another recognisable texture: bass figures, machine rhythms, keyboards and guitar underpin Molchat Doma's songs. Naviband's work, meanwhile, places Belarusian-language songwriting on an accessible international pop stage. These are selected strands within a larger musical field; rural ceremonial participation, concert attendance and online discovery should not be collapsed into a single popularity scale. <ref name="f7" /><ref name="f1" />

== Artists ==
Arciom Lukjanenka and Ksenija Žuk are the central voices of Naviband. Their ''Historyja majho žyccia'', presented at Eurovision in 2017 as ''Story of My Life'', was the contest's first Belarusian-language entry. The official artist profile records the group's earlier single ''Abdymi Mine'' and touring in Central and Eastern Europe. Their later ''Adliga'' provides a separate, more recent point of entry. <ref name="f1" /><ref name="f8" />

For Troitsa, ''Zimachka'' and the group's documented history allow listeners to connect individual performers with the division of vocal, string and percussion work. Kirchuk's projects also extend into diaspora collaboration: the Canadian Belarusian Institute of Arts and Sciences presented his ''Varažbit'' project in 2024, while the project 3Мы released ''Nekrut'' with him in 2025, drawing on songs about conscription into the Russian imperial army. <ref name="f10" /><ref name="f11">[https://binim.org/index.php/2024/05/01/varazbit-in-canada/ Varažbit in Canada], Belarusian Institute of Arts and Sciences, Canada.</ref><ref name="f12">[https://3mi.ca/life-goes-on/ Life goes on, even during war: Nekrut], 3Мы / 3MI.</ref>

Molchat Doma's ''Belaya Polosa'' and Shuma's ''Bahna'' supply very different examples of music shaped by relocation. Following the recordings alongside their makers' accounts preserves those differences; exile is a circumstance shared by artists whose musical techniques and expressive aims remain individual. <ref name="f7" /><ref name="f6" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved region uses Belarus's reference country outline as a broad musical overview. It encompasses several kinds of local and national circulation without implying uniform taste, an ethnic boundary or a change in listening at every border crossing. Its Belarusian- and Russian-language repertoires should be identified accurately without assigning listeners a political position from language alone.

The national outline is particularly incomplete as a picture of present-day musical work. Warsaw-based Shuma, Molchat Doma's Los Angeles recording context and Kirchuk's Canadian collaborations illustrate how artists sustain Belarusian connections outside it. These routes belong in the article even though their destination cities are not incorporated into the polygon. <ref name="f6" /><ref name="f7" /><ref name="f11" /><ref name="f12" />

Within the country, a documented village rite cannot stand for every rural community, just as internationally promoted bands cannot stand for every urban audience. Evidence here combines community documentation, artist and label accounts, scholarship and attributed rights monitoring. It supports a connected musical region while leaving audience shares and fine-grained local popularity unresolved.
