== Summary ==
Barbados–Windwards brings together Barbados, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada: three neighbouring musical societies linked by calypso, soca and carnival, with strongly individual local repertoires. Barbados has Crop Over, tuk and spouge; Saint Vincent's Vincy Mas sustains a particularly visible soca competition; Grenada's Spicemas is associated with Jab music, while Carriacou preserves distinctive Big Drum and Christmas parang practices. Their shared dance circuits coexist with these differences. <ref name="bajanmusic">[https://www.visitbarbados.org/bajan-music-of-the-sun Bajan Music of the Sun], Barbados Tourism Marketing.</ref><ref name="vincymas">[https://discoversvg.com/events/vincy-mas/ Vincy Mas], St Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority.</ref><ref name="jablink">[https://nowgrenada.com/2019/08/establishing-the-missing-link-in-the-jab-jab-music/ Establishing the missing link in the Jab Jab music], NOW Grenada.</ref><ref name="carriacouculture">[https://www.puregrenada.com/experience-the-undiscovered-caribean-island-of-carriacou/?v=0b3b97fa6688 Experience the undiscovered Caribbean island of Carriacou], Grenada Tourism Authority.</ref>

The region is best heard through contrasting occasions. A calypsonian addressing public affairs, a percussion-led Landship performance, an amplified soca crowd and a Carriacou village band belong to different musical settings. Reggae and dancehall also form part of the Barbadian soundscape, and internationally circulating pop is represented by Rihanna's career. No single carnival rhythm accounts for everything residents hear. <ref name="bajanmusic" /><ref name="rihanna">[https://www.grammy.com/artists/rihanna/5943/ Rihanna: artist biography and awards], Recording Academy.</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==
Recent activity includes both new songs and deliberate transmission. At Saint Vincent's 2025 Soca Monarch, Fireman Hooper and Skinny Fabulous jointly won with “Erupt.” Their collaboration turned an established competitive rivalry into a shared performance, with elaborate volcanic staging. This documents a lively local songwriting and spectacle economy rather than simply the importing of Trinidadian hits. <ref name="erupt2025">[https://www.searchlight.vc/front-page/2025/07/11/fireman-skinny-fabulous-cause-eruption-victoria-park/ Fireman and Skinny Fabulous cause eruption at Victoria Park], Searchlight.</ref>

Barbados's 2025 Pic-O-De-Crop rules gave equal substantial weight to lyrics and melody, alongside rendition and arrangement. Calypso's institutional life therefore rewards the crafted song as well as its message. The NCF's 2025 Landship programme offered children instruction in tuk, movement, costume and associated cooperative practices. Its November 2024 Jackie Opel Legacy Lab call proposed contemporary reinterpretation of spouge through a nine-month residency. These programmes show several approaches to renewal; the call itself is evidence of an initiative, not proof of its eventual outcomes. <ref name="pic2025">[https://ncf.bb/pic-o-de-crop-competition-2025-rules/ Pic-O-De-Crop Competition 2025 Rules], National Cultural Foundation, Barbados.</ref><ref name="landship2025">[https://ncf.bb/registration-forms/2025-community-landship-programme/ 2025 Community Landship Programme], National Cultural Foundation, Barbados.</ref><ref name="opellab">[https://ncf.bb/2024/11/07/open-call-for-expressions-of-interest/ Open Call for Expressions of Interest: Jackie Opel Legacy Lab], National Cultural Foundation, Barbados.</ref>

In Grenada, a July 2025 commentary questioned Jab performances outside their customary carnival setting. The disagreement is revealing: Jab is living music whose appropriate context remains debated within the community. <ref name="jab2025">[https://nowgrenada.com/2025/07/a-growing-concern-with-random-jab-playing/ A growing concern with random Jab playing], NOW Grenada; Yao Atunwa.</ref>

== History ==
Barbadian tuk combines military-associated instruments with African-derived rhythmic practice. Its relationship with the Landship joins music to an organized performance culture, rather than treating drumming as an isolated sound. Crop Over connects modern carnival celebration to the end of the sugar harvest. Spouge, developed by Jackie Opel in the 1960s, belongs to a later age of amplified popular music and exchange with neighbouring islands. <ref name="bajanmusic" />

Grenadian Jab music likewise changed through technology. Traditional masqueraders used drums and improvised percussion; studio musicians translated their distinctive beat into commercial recordings. A historical account identifies Moss International's 1991 Road March winner “Jambalassie Rule” as a landmark, while emphasizing the subsequent role of Nordley Frederick and Rhythm Mix before Tallpree's breakthrough. This is a succession of adaptations, not the sudden invention of carnival itself. <ref name="jablink" />

Carriacou offers another historical trajectory. Big Drum commemorates African ancestry through collective song, dance and percussion at important community occasions. The island's parang festival, established in 1977, gave village ensembles a competitive setting for Christmas repertoire and topical commentary. These small-island institutions deserve attention alongside the region's better-known mass carnivals. <ref name="carriacouculture" /><ref name="carriacouparang">[https://www.puregrenada.com/product/carriacou-parang-festival/?v=0b3b97fa6688 Carriacou Parang Festival], Grenada Tourism Authority.</ref>

== Genres ==
Calypso gives words an unusually conspicuous role: social observation, criticism and memorable turns of phrase sit within composed melodies. Soca emphasizes dance energy and collective participation, while the Barbadian competition record distinguishes party and sweet soca categories. These are related fields with different performance priorities, not mutually exclusive artist identities. <ref name="pic2025" /><ref name="bajansoca">[https://ncf.bb/soca-monarchs/ Soca Monarchs], National Cultural Foundation, Barbados.</ref>

Tuk can be recognized by the combination of fife or flute with drums and other percussion. Spouge brings a different ensemble texture, including bass, drum kit and cowbell. Grenadian Jab's distinctive percussion pattern and chanted delivery make masquerade audible even in electronically produced tracks; the movement from handheld percussion to studio production is central to its sound. <ref name="bajanmusic" /><ref name="jablink" />

Carriacou parang places strings and voices at the centre, with instruments such as guitar, cuatro, mandolin or violin and percussion. Festival bands perform a Christmas test piece and then a “melee,” reviewing the year's incidents satirically. Big Drum's singers, dancers and drummers instead work within commemorative and community relationships. The two practices should not be collapsed into a generic category of island folk music. <ref name="carriacouparang" /><ref name="carriacouculture" />

== Artists ==
Barbados's competition archive offers an accessible listening sequence: Edwin Yearwood's “Obadele,” Alison Hinds's “In the Meantime,” Lil Rick's “Down Behind De Truck,” and Red Plastic Bag's “Boat Ride” represent different moments in its soca history. These are documented competition successes, not a proposed ranking of present-day favourites. Jackie Opel provides the key historical entry to spouge, whose legacy is now explicitly addressed by cultural-development programmes. <ref name="bajansoca" /><ref name="opellab" />

Fireman Hooper and Skinny Fabulous illustrate Saint Vincent's sustained production of major carnival performers. Their “Erupt” collaboration also shows that an artist's place in the scene can change through partnership, not just another solo victory. Tallpree's “Ole Woman Alone” is a useful Grenadian counterpart: contemporary commentary recalls its cross-island reception around 2000 as important to Jab music's visibility. <ref name="erupt2025" /><ref name="jab2025" />

Rihanna connects Barbados to global pop and R&B, with a recording career encompassing “Umbrella” and ''Anti''. Her prominence demonstrates an outward musical route without making her catalogue a proxy for all Barbadian listening. Carriacou's village parang bands and Big Drum practitioners supply a necessary collective counterweight to celebrity-centred history. <ref name="rihanna" /><ref name="carriacouparang" /><ref name="carriacouculture" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved region comprises Barbados, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada, including Carriacou and Petite Martinique. “Windwards” is a compact musical label here, not a claim to include every island called Windward in geographical usage. Saint Lucia and Dominica are treated in Creole Antilles, while Trinidad and Tobago has its own entry.

Shared carnival circulation supports this grouping, but its internal differences are essential to the interpretation. The map does not imply that Big Drum characterizes Barbados, that all Grenadians prefer Jab, or that a small-island repertoire stops at an international border. Cultural programmes, competition records and historical accounts establish identifiable practices and institutions; they provide no comparable territory-wide audience shares. The illustrative outline follows the approved editorial extent and should be read as a guide to connected musical settings.
