== Summary ==
Atlas–Souss describes a connected but internally varied musical landscape across Morocco's Atlas mountains and Souss valley. Amazigh-language poetry, collective song and dance, professional singer-poets and recorded popular music give this area a distinctive emphasis within wider Moroccan listening. The region includes village celebrations and urban audiences connected to them; it is not confined to remote mountains or performances staged for visitors. <ref name="r1">[https://archives.adem-geneve.com/archives/maroc/awash.html La nuit berbère: L’Ahwash du Haut-Atlas — Ateliers d’ethnomusicologie], La nuit berbère: L’Ahwash du Haut-Atlas — Ateliers d’ethnomusicologie.</ref><ref name="r4">[https://archives.crem-cnrs.fr/archives/collections/CNRSMH_E_1997_006_001/ Berber musical traditions of the High and Anti-Atlas — CREM-CNRS collection], Berber musical traditions of the High and Anti-Atlas — CREM-CNRS collection.</ref>

The important distinction is between related traditions, not between an unchanged rural past and a modern city. Ahwash is particularly associated with the Souss, Anti-Atlas and western High Atlas. Ahidous has a different center of gravity in the Middle Atlas and adjoining highland communities. Joining them in a broad regional overview should not imply that their languages, poetry, rhythms or local performance rules are interchangeable. <ref name="r1" /><ref name="r3">[https://mjcc.gov.ma/fr/le-festival-national-dahidos-la-21eme-edition-ain-loh/ Le festival national d’Ahidos, la 21ème édition — Morocco Ministry of Culture], Le festival national d’Ahidos, la 21ème édition — Morocco Ministry of Culture.</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==
Amazigh musical practice continues through recordings, festivals and the careers of professional artists as well as community events. The 2021 Rrways anthology brought together contemporary recordings by singer-poets from the western High Atlas, Anti-Atlas and Souss. Its preservation project presented active musicians, including women, and treated the repertory as a living field of performance.

The music also occupies stages shared with dance music and nationally circulating popular sounds. Reporting on Agadir's Timitar festival in 2022 described appearances by Fatima Tabaamrant and an ahwash ensemble alongside contemporary DJs. This juxtaposition is useful evidence of coexistence, although one festival cannot establish what proportion of everyday listening belongs to each style.

Within the accepted regional profile, chaabi and rap remain part of wider Moroccan circulation. Their inclusion does not mean that every Amazigh musical tradition has turned into pop or that all listeners choose music according to language alone.

== History ==
Collective performance places poetic knowledge in a social setting. In ahwash, the sung word, drumming and organized movement are interdependent. A celebration can involve exchange and response rather than a fixed work delivered to a passive audience. Ethnomusicological documentation of Inddamn poetic contests shows why verbal skill and the relationship between participants matter as much as instrumental sound. <ref name="r1" /><ref name="r2">[https://www.persee.fr/doc/horma_0984-2616_2000_num_43_1_1914 Une joute poétique des Inddamn — Lahsen Hira, Horizons Maghrébins], Une joute poétique des Inddamn — Lahsen Hira, Horizons Maghrébins.</ref>

Rrways developed another performance relationship: professional poet-musicians and ensembles circulated songs among communities and later through recording. Women singer-poets are central to this history, not merely recent additions to a male tradition. The anthology documentation draws attention to this professional world and its regional reach. <ref name="f1" />

Archive recordings and contemporary festival presentations capture different moments in these practices. Historical recordings are valuable evidence of particular performers and situations, but they cannot define everything heard today. Likewise, a national festival can make local forms visible while shortening or rearranging them for a new stage. The continuing relationship between local occasions, professional work and public presentation is part of the region's history. <ref name="r3" /><ref name="r4" />

== Genres ==
Ahwash combines collective singing, percussion, poetry and dance; it is broader than one dance step or a single standard rhythm. Ahidous similarly joins sound and movement, but belongs to its own cluster of highland practices. A careful listener should attend to who leads, how responses are organized and how the words shape the event. <ref name="r1" /><ref name="r3" />

Rrways song emphasizes the craft of the poet-performer and an instrumental vocabulary that can include the bowed ribab. Recorded Amazigh popular song extends that craft through other arrangements and ensemble sizes. Neither electrification nor a studio recording makes a song less connected to its language community. Conversely, an acoustic instrument alone does not establish that a performance belongs to the same local tradition. <ref name="f1" /><ref name="r4" />

Chaabi, rap and other Moroccan popular styles provide additional listening contexts. The defining regional feature is the particular weight and continuing renewal of Amazigh-language practices within that larger mixture, rather than their exclusive presence.

=== Repertoire distinctions ===
[[Rwais]] — Rwais is the professional Tashelhit poet-musician performance tradition of southwestern Morocco; raïs is a singular form, with raïssa used for a woman performer. Poet-singers, instrumental work, dance and traveling professional networks distinguish this field from locally organized Ahwash, although the musical worlds interact. Tashelhit is a language connection within a varied repertoire, not proof of an immutable ethnic sound. <ref name="africa-recovery-ma-schuyler">[https://publish.iupress.indiana.edu/read/the-study-of-folk-music-in-the-modern-world/section/2ab77c17-a5eb-4b3e-bfff-fec6939c1efb Philip V. == Artists ==
Fatima Tabaamrant is a useful starting point for hearing the professional singer-poet tradition. Documentary descriptions of the Anti-Atlas and Souss identify both her singing and poetry, while Timitar reporting places her in a contemporary public programme. She links a named artist's choices to a larger practice without standing for every performer in the region. <ref name="f2" /><ref name="f3">[https://africultures.com/films/?no=23157 Anti Atlas – Souss], Africultures.</ref>

Collective ensembles also deserve recognition. Farida Benlyazid's documentary journey includes ahwash troupes associated with Tabia, Addal, Agraw, Mirleft and Aït Baâmrane. These examples direct attention to local groups and performance relationships rather than only internationally distributed solo stars. An archive or festival recording should be identified by its actual ensemble and locality whenever that information is available. <ref name="f3" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The stored extent follows a broad Atlas–Souss mountain and valley corridor. It deliberately includes connections between communities instead of marking only Agadir, festival grounds or famous musicians' birthplaces. Its interior edge is an editorial transition, not a surveyed division between musical publics. Ahwash and ahidous evidence helps explain the regional relationships but does not validate every point on the polygon. <ref name="r1" /><ref name="r3" />

The outline overlaps Morocco's broader listening frame. People moving toward coastal cities or abroad continue to participate in these musical worlds, so the mapped area is a principal geography rather than an ownership boundary. The evidence is strongest for named performance traditions and documented artists; it is weaker for comparative present-day listening shares. This article consequently preserves differences between the Souss, High Atlas and Middle Atlas and avoids assigning a single homogeneous Amazigh taste to all residents.
