== Summary ==

Mizrahi music is an Israeli popular-song tradition also widely described as Israeli Mediterranean music, or ''musica yam tikhonit''. It draws on Middle Eastern, North African and Mediterranean musical resources while developing a substantial Hebrew repertoire. Its historical association with Mizrahi Jews matters, but contemporary participation extends beyond ancestry, religious observance or a single neighborhood.

== Contemporary and trending ==

Contemporary Mediterranean pop combines powerful vocal melodies with polished studio and electronic dance production. Omer Adam, Eyal Golan, Sarit Hadad, Pe'er Tasi, Eden Ben Zaken and Osher Cohen offer different approaches within this broad popular world. Older recordings by Zohar Argov, Haim Moshe and Zehava Ben continue to provide reference points. A song can belong to both Mizrahi music and the wider Israeli pop mainstream; the categories need not exclude one another.<ref>[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLMmX17D2uw Omer Adam: Shnei Meshugaim], artist official channel, accessed 23 October 2026.</ref><ref>[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iay1xdXljb4 Peer Tasi: Ma Yihiye Machar], artist official channel, accessed 23 October 2026.</ref>

== History ==

Research by Amy Horowitz traces the formation of a pan-ethnic popular style and the importance of cassette production and distribution outside established industry channels. Edwin Seroussi explains that Mediterranean terminology became an alternative designation for a music already called Mizrahi. Hebrew adaptation of Greek, Arabic and Turkish songs formed part of its development, followed by increasingly prominent original composition and interaction with rock and mainstream popular music.<ref>[https://wsupress.wayne.edu/9780814334652/ Mediterranean Israeli Music and the Politics of the Aesthetic, research description], Wayne State University Press, accessed 23 October 2026.</ref><ref>[https://www2.umbc.edu/MA/index/number7/seroussi/ser_06.htm Mediterraneanism as subversion], Edwin Seroussi, accessed 23 October 2026.</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==

Expressive solo singing, ornamented phrases and emphatic refrains are recurring attractions. Different recordings use guitar, bouzouki-like textures, keyboards, percussion, orchestral colour and programmed rhythms. Slow, emotionally intense ballads coexist with dance songs and medleys. Musical connections to Arabic and Turkish song do not make the repertoire interchangeable with all Arabic pop; texts, performance histories and listening communities also give it identity.

== Geography and communities ==

The music belongs across Israel's Jewish-majority urban and town listening networks, including the coastal metropolitan belt, Jerusalem and southern and northern communities. Tel Aviv's historical market circulation should not be mistaken for a present-day boundary around its old cassette stalls. Touring performers reach several cities, and mixed places sustain intersections with Arab audiences and musicians. Compact fields can express local concentrations while preserving these connections, without treating a map strength as an ethnic census or an audience percentage.<ref>[https://www.zappa-club.co.il/en/ Official venues and performance listings], Zappa, accessed 23 October 2026.</ref>

== Artists ==

Zohar Argov's ''Haperach Begani'', Zehava Ben's ''Tipat Mazal'', Haim Moshe's ''Ahavat Chayay'' and the work of Daklon, Margalit Tzanani, Ofer Levi, Moshe Peretz, Dudu Aharon, Itay Levi and Nasrin Kadri reveal different periods and vocal approaches.<ref>[https://www.nli.org.il/en/items/NNL_MUSIC_AL997009939227805171//NLI Tipat Mazal: performer, composer and recording details], National Library of Israel, accessed 23 October 2026.</ref>
