== Summary ==

Merengue venezolano, also called merengue caraqueño, is a Venezuelan song and instrumental tradition especially associated with Caracas. Its rhythmic phrasing and urban history distinguish it from Dominican merengue despite the shared name. <ref name="southamerica2026-ve-merengue">[https://www.fundacionbigott.org/no-se-ha-caido-el-merengue-caraqueno/ Fundación Bigott, No se ha caído el merengue caraqueño, 2023]. Ricardo Zapata Barrios’s 2022 solo-bass performance of Luis Laguna’s El Saltarín shows one contemporary instrumental treatment. Fundación Bigott’s September 2026 teaching programme includes a Luis Laguna cuatro specialism within wider popular-music classes; the announcement does not identify every piece taught. <ref name="southamerica2026-ve-laguna-bass">[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnDUlXNBJUI Ricardo Zapata Barrios, El Saltarín performance, 2022]. == History ==

Bigott’s historical account follows nineteenth-century dance repertory and the merengue’s early-twentieth-century identification with Caracas. Transformations of contradanza contribute to this history, but similarly named Caribbean traditions followed different paths. <ref name="southamerica2026-ve-merengue">[https://www.fundacionbigott.org/no-se-ha-caido-el-merengue-caraqueno/ Fundación Bigott, No se ha caído el merengue caraqueño, 2023]. == Musical characteristics ==

A characteristic five-part rhythmic division gives the music its lilt; performance phrasing matters beyond simply writing a time signature. Vocal pieces can use humour, double meaning and observations of ordinary city life. Instrumental arrangements can relocate the tune into very different ensembles. <ref name="southamerica2026-ve-merengue">[https://www.fundacionbigott.org/no-se-ha-caido-el-merengue-caraqueno/ Fundación Bigott, No se ha caído el merengue caraqueño, 2023]. == Geography and communities ==

The main field connects Caracas with surrounding central Venezuelan musical networks. A weaker continuation across central-western cities represents circulation, without assigning equal intensity to the whole country.

== Artists ==

Luis Laguna supplies the composition selected here; Zapata explicitly identifies his own electric-bass arrangement. The instrument choice is a creative interpretation, not a claim that solo bass defines traditional merengue instrumentation. <ref name="southamerica2026-ve-laguna-bass">[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnDUlXNBJUI Ricardo Zapata Barrios, El Saltarín performance, 2022].
