View source for Kazakh qyl-qobyz music

== Summary ==

Kazakh qyl-qobyz music centers on the resonant bowed sound of the traditional horsehair-string instrument, also written kyl-kobyz. The collection emphasizes kuy repertoire and its continuing solo interpretation, distinct from plucked dombra music and from all-purpose modern orchestral kobyz playing.<ref>[https://the.akdn/en/en/how-we-work/our-agencies/aga-khan-trust-culture/akmi/raushan-orozbaeva Aga Khan Music Programme: Raushan Orozbaeva].</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==

Teaching, community performance and concert interpretation keep this repertoire active. Archival and recent performances are retained with their distinct versions; older music is not excluded simply because of age. <ref>[https://www.abaicenter.org/connecting-to-kazakh-nomadic-culture-through-sound-the-qyl-qobyz/ Abai Center: Connecting to Kazakh nomadic culture through the qyl-qobyz].</ref>

== History ==

The instrument is associated with Qorqyt traditions and with later musician-composers including Yqylas. Twentieth-century institutional teaching and concert arrangements changed its settings, while performers continued to cultivate the older instrument’s particular sound.<ref>[https://the.akdn/en/en/how-we-work/our-agencies/aga-khan-trust-culture/akmi/raushan-orozbaeva Aga Khan Music Programme: Raushan Orozbaeva].</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==

Bowing, sustained resonance, timbral changes and flexible melodic gestures allow the qobyz to evoke voices, animals and narrative images. Instrumental storytelling and named compositions are central. A song merely mentioning the kobyz is not an instrumental example.

== Geography and communities ==

The Syr Darya and central-southern steppe provide historical reference landscapes. Almaty and Astana are important teaching and concert centers. Modest connected fields and separate institutional concentrations express those different relationships without claiming a uniform national audience.<ref>[https://korkut.tselinny.org/artist/raushan-orazbay Tselinny Korkut 2026: Raushan Orazbay].</ref>

== Artists ==

Raushan Orazbayeva, Smatay Umbetbayev, Zhappas Kalambayev, Sayan Aqmolda and Almat Saizhan provide distinct approaches. Contemporary adaptations are identified alongside established Qorqyt and Yqylas repertoire.
