Summary
Hallelujah Chicken Run Band was a Zimbabwean ensemble important in the formation of the electric, Shona-rooted popular music later called Chimurenga. Its history connects a mining-town audience with the country's wider recording scene.<ref name="chicken-analog">Analog Africa: Take One, researched band history and reissue notes. == History ==
Trumpeter Daram Karanga assembled the group to entertain workers in Mhangura. An initial repertoire of rumba and Afro-rock broadened toward electric arrangements of Shona music. Success in a 1974 competition led to recording sessions with producer Crispen Matema and a growing public beyond the mining town.

Music and repertoire
The band's historical importance lies in its transformation of mbira-related melodic cycles and shaker rhythms into guitar and drum-kit parts. Shona singing changed the relationship between the ensemble and its local listeners. The resulting synthesis was a collective contribution to Chimurenga, with popular dance music and inherited resources actively changing one another.

Members and collaborators
An early lineup included Thomas Mapfumo and guitarist Joshua Hlomayi. Personnel changed across the years documented by Take One, which gathers recordings from 1974–1979. 'Ngoma Yarira', 'Mudzimu Ndiringe' and 'Chaminuka Mukuru' are entry points into that recorded history.
