== Summary ==

Gaita zuliana is a Zulia song-and-ensemble tradition with several regional forms. Its widely circulated gaita de furro connects solo singing, chorus, distinctive percussion and cuatro. The word gaita here names a Venezuelan musical world, not the Colombian flute ensemble or a bagpipe tradition. <ref name="southamerica2026-ve-gaita">[https://fundacionbigott.org/la-gaita/ Fundación Bigott, La gaita, 2020]. A municipal release documents the April 2026 opening of Maracaibo’s Ricardo Hernández gaita school, with more than forty children enrolled. It also recognizes Hernández’s work as composer, arranger and producer. This is evidence of organized transmission, without turning enrolment into a national popularity statistic. <ref name="southamerica2026-ve-gaita-2026">[https://diarioversionfinal.com/ciudad/alcaldia-de-maracaibo-inaugura-escuela-de-gaita-en-honor-al-guaquero-ricardo-hernandez/ Maracaibo municipal press release, Ricardo Hernández gaita school, 26 April 2026]. == History ==

The better-known Maracaibo furro form sits beside southern-lake gaita de tambora and western gaita perijanera. Devotion, local identity, topical criticism and festivities have different balances across these practices. They are retained as distinctions within one regional gateway. <ref name="southamerica2026-ve-gaita">[https://fundacionbigott.org/la-gaita/ Fundación Bigott, La gaita, 2020]. == Musical characteristics ==

Furro, tambora, charrasca, maracas and cuatro support voice and chorus in the familiar ensemble. Later popular arrangements add resources. Southern-lake tambora and Perijá traditions differ in instrumentation and festive organization; one commercial recording cannot represent them all. <ref name="southamerica2026-ve-gaita">[https://fundacionbigott.org/la-gaita/ Fundación Bigott, La gaita, 2020]. == Geography and communities ==

The main field spans the connected Maracaibo basin and Zulia communities. A weaker central Venezuelan field represents wider circulation. These are overlapping listening landscapes, not uniform administrative masks.

Gran Coquivacoa and Neguito Borjas provide the selected song gateway. The 2026 teaching account emphasizes the often less-visible work of arranging, composing and producing alongside singers. <ref name="southamerica2026-ve-gaita-2026">[https://diarioversionfinal.com/ciudad/alcaldia-de-maracaibo-inaugura-escuela-de-gaita-en-honor-al-guaquero-ricardo-hernandez/ Maracaibo municipal press release, Ricardo Hernández gaita school, 26 April 2026].
