View source for Finnish iskelmä and dance song

== Summary ==

Finnish iskelmä is a tradition of popular song whose changing arrangements connect melodic storytelling, dance music and shared listening. This collection also follows the social dance-band circuit, where tango stands beside other dance forms. It is neither an alternative name for all Finnish pop nor a transplant of an Argentine tango playlist.

The continuing Seinäjoki Tangomarkkinat singing competition introduces new interpreters: Hanna Hirvonen and Veeti Tikkanen were its 2025 winners, followed by Raija Mäntyniemi and Juho Punkeri in 2026. The event also commissions attention to new work through a composition and lyrics competition; its 2025 finalists included “Kristallihäkki”, “Oodi” and “Sielläkin sä oot”. Current practice therefore includes new songs as well as familiar repertoire.<ref>[https://tangomarkkinat.fi/laulukilpailu/ Seinäjoen Tangomarkkinat: Laulukilpailu].</ref><ref>[https://tangomarkkinat.fi/tangon-savellys-ja-sanoituskilpailun-viisi-parasta-teosta-valittu/ Seinäjoen Tangomarkkinat: Tangon Sävellys- ja sanoituskilpailun viisi parasta teosta valittu].</ref>

== History ==

During the twentieth century, iskelmä developed a recognisable place within Finnish popular music while absorbing international fashions. Its relationship with tango and kupletti is important, but rock, country, pop and disco arrangements have also entered its sound. The category is broad enough to change without losing its emphasis on song and interpretation.<ref>[https://www.fmq.fi/articles/finnish-undertone-editorial-from-fmq-2-2009 FMQ: Finnish undertone – editorial from FMQ 2/2009].</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==

A clear vocal melody and a strongly projected lyric often lead the performance. Dance bands use rhythmic patterns appropriate to the particular dance, supported by keyboards, guitars, bass, percussion or accordion. Tango’s distinctive pulse should be recognised within the wider repertoire rather than imposed on it all. Stage and concert versions may treat tempo and instrumentation differently.

== Geography and communities ==

Summer dance pavilions bring bands and dancers together in villages and lakeside settings, and the music also travels through radio, recordings and touring. Seinäjoki is an important meeting point rather than the sole heartland. Finnish Roma performers have contributed strongly to tango and iskelmä, while their own song traditions remain more than a subset of those commercial genres.<ref>[https://finland.fi/emoji/lavatanssit/ thisisFINLAND: Lavatanssit].</ref><ref>[https://www.fmq.fi/articles/fmq-playlist-romani-music FMQ: Finnish Roma songs, curated by Anette Åkerlund].</ref>

== Artists ==

Saija Tuupanen, Kyösti Mäkimattila, Eija Kantola, Arja Koriseva and Taikakuu are useful discovery routes for particular dance songs and performances. Suvi Teräsniska connects melodic popular song to contemporary audiences. Erika Vikman’s later disco-pop work should not automatically be classified as tango because she won the singing competition in 2016.
