View source for Finnish contemporary folk

== Summary ==

Finnish contemporary folk is an open field in which inherited song, dance music and instruments meet new composition, studio production and other styles. It includes acoustic innovation as well as electronic and band-based experiments. This listening view complements specific traditions such as pelimanni and runosong; it does not erase their different repertoires or recast all fusion as an old village practice.

Vilma Jää brings traditional stories and instruments into electronic songwriting; Suistamon Sähkö combines accordion, voices and electronic rhythm in its Karelian-linked dance music. Vimma’s “Ei noi muut” (2025) documents another direction, with fiddles, alternative pop and emphatic activist lyrics. Such projects make different choices about what is inherited, recomposed or newly written.<ref>[https://musicfinland.com/playlists/new-folk-and-global-music-from-finland Music Finland: New Folk and Global Music from Finland].</ref><ref>[https://musicfinland.com/en/news/vimma-artivism-driven-by-punk-hip-hop-and-fiddle-energy Music Finland: Vimma – Artivism driven by punk, hip-hop and fiddle energy].</ref>

== History ==

The late-1960s folk revival and the Kaustinen festival helped create new public settings for traditional music. Conservatoire and university teaching supported professional experimentation, while groups such as Värttinä helped bring Finnish and Karelian-related vocal music to international audiences. These developments coexist with family and local transmission rather than replacing it.<ref>[https://finland.fi/arts-culture/tracing-the-rise-of-finlands-folk-music-from-village-roots-to-global-acclaim/ thisisFINLAND: Tracing the rise of Finland’s folk music from village roots to global acclaim].</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==

Kantele, fiddle, accordion and jouhikko can be treated as sources of rhythm, drones or amplified texture as well as melody. Voices may use traditional-style phrasing, new harmonies, spoken or rapped passages and pop structures. The contrast between an acoustic performance and a studio dance track is substantial even when they draw on related source material.

== Geography and communities ==

Eastern heritage is not confined to an old border or the birthplace of a tune. Loimolan Voima’s “Hilma da Onni” connects a new Karelian-language interpretation to family histories in Suistamo, while its contemporary touring reaches eastern villages, western festivals and southern venues. These connections join new creative networks with inherited regional traditions.<ref>[https://loimolanvoima.fi/blog/hilma-da-onni Loimolan Voima: Hilma da Onni].</ref><ref>[https://loimolanvoima.fi/keikat Loimolan Voima: Keikat].</ref>

== Artists ==

Värttinä, Maija Kauhanen, Tuuletar, Vilma Jää, Suistamon Sähkö, Pekko Käppi and Loimolan Voima supply contrasting artist and work leads. Vimma belongs where its particular arrangement retains the relevant folk relationship. Sámi projects have a distinct community route even when they share festivals or collaborators.
