== Summary ==

Fandango caiçara joins music, dance, poetry, instrument-making and community sociability in southeastern and southern coastal Brazil. The term covers varied local modas and ways of dancing, rather than a single beat. Its relationship with fishing, cultivation, collective work and festive life distinguishes it from simply using fandango to mean a dance party. <ref name="southamerica2026-cs-fandango-iphan">[https://www.gov.br/iphan/pt-br/superintendencias/parana/patrimonio-imaterial Iphan Paraná, Patrimônio Imaterial: Fandango Caiçara]. Sesc’s 2025 Sonora Brasil programme brings Melina Mulazani together with Leo da Rabeca and Luiz Parna in Fandango Mestre Zeca, including instruments made by the elder musician. A June 2026 programme also presents Fandango Bacurau de Ubatuba. These examples show different current paths of transmission and circulation rather than a tradition confined to an archival recording. <ref name="southamerica2026-cs-sonora">[https://sesc-es.com.br/2025/06/23/sesc-es-vai-sediar-a-estreia-nacional-do-sonora-brasil-2025/ Sesc ES, Sonora Brasil 2025 programme, 23 June 2025]. == History ==

Iphan’s account connects fandango with mutirão work exchange and the social relationships of coastal rural and fishing communities. Music, devotion, prestige and cooperation are intertwined. The recorded history is local and plural: the Cananéia profile of André Pires follows rabeca learning, family knowledge and responsibility for a Bandeira do Divino, roles wider than stage musicianship. <ref name="southamerica2026-cs-fandango-iphan">[https://www.gov.br/iphan/pt-br/superintendencias/parana/patrimonio-imaterial Iphan Paraná, Patrimônio Imaterial: Fandango Caiçara]. == Musical characteristics ==

Viola, rabeca, adufe and other locally used resources support singing and dance. Batido practices make wooden-clog footwork audible, while other modas emphasize different movement and phrasing. Instrument-making is part of the musical knowledge. Sesc’s dated interviews with João Firmino and Amir Oliveira describe craft and learning through observation, memory and practice rather than a single standardized instrument design. <ref name="southamerica2026-cs-fandango-craft">[https://portal.sescsp.org.br/online/artigo/4708_FANDANGO%2BAO%2BSOM%2BDA%2BVIOLA%2BBRANCA Sesc, Fandango ao som da viola branca, 2007]. == Geography and communities ==

A principal connected landscape follows Iguape, Cananéia, Guaraqueçaba, Paranaguá and neighbouring coastal communities. A weaker northern continuation acknowledges the Ubatuba circuit without claiming identical repertoire everywhere. The 2025 reassessment also considers Itapoá communities in Santa Catarina; the music’s geography should not be reduced to the boundary of an older registration. <ref name="southamerica2026-cs-fandango-territory">[https://sicg.iphan.gov.br/sicg/bemImaterial/rel/126/ Iphan, Relatório complementar: Fandango Caiçara]. == Artists ==

Mestre Zé Pereira supplies the selected instrumental recording. The wider Família Pereira, Mestre Zeca-associated musicians and Ubatuba’s Bacurau offer further artist gateways. Credit specific performers and modas whenever the source identifies them. The 2013 André Pires profile is historical testimony; it is not treated as a current inventory of living masters. <ref name="southamerica2026-cs-andre-pires">[https://www.fandangoemcananeia.art.br/Andre-Pires.html Natália Latansio, André Pires, Fandango em Cananéia, 2013]. [[Música caipira]] supplies a useful comparison in string craft and interior–coastal connections, but the viola does not make every repertory caipira. [[Vaneira]] belongs to a different southern baile world. Other caiçara dance names are retained as local distinctions within the article until separate musical and geographic identities are adequately supported.

A strong southern coastal landscape and weaker northern continuation; visiting tour venues do not become new origin cores.

The fields express editorial judgments about relative musical affinity and reach, not measured audience shares. Radius is the zero edge of a linear fade; same-genre overlaps combine by maximum.
