== Contemporary and trending ==

Briged Seni Melaka and other cultural ensembles sustain public performances. Recordings retain the interplay between poetic response, vocal expression and instrumental accompaniment.

=== Contemporary listening and repertoire ===

The listening collection now draws on a wider set of individually identified musical recordings and performances. It retains worthwhile earlier repertoire alongside recent discovery, distinguishes actual versions and collaborators, and keeps original-release or session dates unknown where the source does not establish them. The player’s recording credits provide the specific performance context; different uploads of the same master are not counted as different music.

== History ==

The practice is shared in Melaka by Malay, Baba Nyonya, Chitty and Portuguese communities. Its present identity reflects exchange among communities rather than an exclusive national or ethnic box.

== Musical characteristics ==

Violin, hand drums and gong supply a flexible setting for alternating voices. The musical flow leaves room for the delivery and reply of four-line pantun verses.<ref name="islands2026-dondang2">[https://pemetaanbudaya.jkkn.gov.my/en/senibudaya/detail/1247 Dondang Sayang: practice and musical ensemble], accessed 24 October 2026.</ref>

== Geography and communities ==

Melaka and connected Straits communities form the principal field. Related circulation in Singapore belongs to the larger Malay musical world, while each documented performance keeps its actual place and performers.

== Artists ==

Briged Seni Melaka, AJ and Pak Abas Melaka, and Institut Seni Melaka ensembles offer useful recorded entrances. Some recordings name the institution but leave individual vocalists uncredited.
