== Summary ==

Chirimía chocoana names a northern Colombian Pacific wind-and-percussion ensemble world and its varied repertoire. Clarinet, bombardino and percussion form a familiar core, with other configurations also present. It is distinct from assuming that every Pacific musical tradition is marimba-led currulao. Quibdó’s Rancho Aparte describes a continuing combination of community teaching and new creation. Its 2023 Re-evolución album and 2024 Richmond festival appearance provide dated examples of wider circulation, while the band’s own account emphasizes exchange with contemporary urban sounds. <ref name="southamerica2026-co-rancho">[https://www.ranchoapartechirimia.com/ Rancho Aparte, ensemble and foundation account]. == History ==

The PNMC account describes local appropriation of clarinet and the addition of bombardino and saxophone within changing community instrumental practices. It places these developments alongside older voice, drum and other ensemble worlds, rather than tracing the music through an unchanged imported instrument. == Musical characteristics ==

Melodic wind lines, bass-register responses and interlocking percussion support dancing and sung or instrumental repertoire. Ensembles and arrangements vary. The teaching guidelines distinguish traditional, classical, sung and orchestrated chirimía formats; no single recording defines every subtype. <ref name="southamerica2026-co-axes">[https://lineamientosnivelbasico.territoriosonoro.org/3.1.1.html MinCultura, basic musical teaching guidelines]. == Geography and communities ==

The principal field connects Chocó’s Atrato, San Juan, Baudó and coastal networks. A weaker Cali connection represents urban and festival circulation. The community geography is wider than Quibdó and should not be reduced to a city dot. <ref name="southamerica2026-co-axes">[https://lineamientosnivelbasico.territoriosonoro.org/3.1.1.html MinCultura, basic musical teaching guidelines]. Rancho Aparte, founded in Quibdó in 2005 and led by Dino Manuelle, supplies the selected performance gateway. Its community foundation connects creation and teaching. The PNMC discussion also recognizes women’s chirimías and changing participation. <ref name="southamerica2026-co-rancho">[https://www.ranchoapartechirimia.com/ Rancho Aparte, ensemble and foundation account].
