== Summary ==

The Mexican chilena is a song-and-dance tradition strongly associated with the Costa Chica of Guerrero and Oaxaca. Its lively rhythmic movement, verses and dancing have local forms distinct from Chilean cueca and from cumbia chilena.<ref name="mex2026-chilena">[https://sic.cultura.gob.mx/ficha.php?table=discografica_dgcpi&table_id=23 Chilenas de la Costa Chica], consulted 24 October 2026.</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==

Traditional ensembles, individual singers and arranged stage performances coexist. Modern regional groups may play chilenas alongside cumbias, so an artist’s home region alone cannot classify every recording.

== History ==

Maritime exchanges with South America in the nineteenth century are part of the documented history. Musicians on the Mexican coast reworked those connections within local son practices rather than simply preserving an imported genre unchanged.<ref name="mex2026-chilena2">[https://sic.cultura.gob.mx/ficha.php?disciplina=&table=frpintangible&table_id=172 Sones, gustos, chilenas y columbias de Costa Chica], consulted 24 October 2026.</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==

Singing and instrumental passages support dancing and zapateado. String textures, percussion and larger arrangements differ between ensembles; playful and topical verses are part of the expressive range.

== Geography and communities ==

Pinotepa, Jamiltepec and adjoining Guerrero–Oaxaca coastal communities form a connected landscape. The inland and southeastern transitions are approximate, not a claim that the whole state of Oaxaca shares one repertoire.

== Artists ==

Susana Harp, Los Folkloristas and Francisco Zárate, El Mestizo, offer different arrangements. The selected “Pinotepa” performances retain their particular credits and should not be counted as different compositions merely because the recordings differ.
