View source for Cariço of the Upper Rio Negro

== Summary ==

Cariço, also written cariçu, names a flute and a related dance-performance practice within Upper Rio Negro musical networks. Interlocking playing makes it an identifiable listening entrance rather than a generic label for forest ambience.<ref name="amz2026-carico">[https://cantosdafloresta.com.br/povos/povos-do-rio-negro/propostas-didaticas/carico-cantando-em-sistema-alternado/ Cantos da Floresta: cariço, interlocking performance and community video], consulted 24 October 2026.</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==

Community presentations, exchanges and educational projects keep different examples publicly accessible. The selection retains the communities and musicians identified by each publisher, including FOIRN’s own multimedia-workshop recording.

== History ==

Upper Rio Negro communities maintain differentiated languages and musical relationships while sharing social spaces. Ethnomusicological research distinguishes local categories of inherited, regional and introduced repertoire rather than describing one uniform Indigenous sound.<ref name="amz2026-negro">[https://www.sibetrans.com/trans/public/docs/01d-trans-2016.pdf Barros: Música e sociabilidade no Alto Rio Negro, original research], consulted 24 October 2026.</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==

Players alternate and complement notes to form a flowing melodic line. Paired participation and the relationship with dance are central; a melody transcribed for teaching is not the complete social event.

== Geography and communities ==

The field follows the Upper Rio Negro and connected Vaupés landscape. It does not extend over the entire western Amazon, nor claim that every community in this frame uses the same instruments and repertoire.

== Artists ==

FOIRN’s Tukano workshop video, a named Tuyuca dance presentation and the Bayaroá community recording provide different public entrances. Individual instrumentalists remain uncredited where the source does not supply their names.
