== Summary ==

Llanos work songs are unaccompanied vocal practices used in cattle work across Colombia and Venezuela. Singing, calls and whistles connect people, animals and daily tasks. They are not simply slow concert songs with pastoral lyrics. <ref name="southamerica2026-llano-unesco">[https://ich.unesco.org/en/USL/colombian-venezuelan-llano-work-songs-01285 UNESCO, Colombian–Venezuelan llano work songs, 2017 inscription]. == Contemporary and trending ==

Colombia’s August 2026 Magdalena: cuenca de saberes announcement includes work-song bearers in an exchange programme. Such initiatives complement the urgent safeguarding attention documented by UNESCO’s 2017 inscription; they do not by themselves establish that transmission risks have ended. <ref name="southamerica2026-co-bearers-2026">[https://www.mincultura.gov.co/noticias/Paginas/mas-de-50-portadores-del-patrimonio-cultural-inmaterial-del-pais-recorreran-la-cuenca-del-rio-magdalena-en-un-encuentro.aspx MinCulturas, Magdalena: cuenca de saberes announcement, 31 August 2026]. == History ==

Colombia’s safeguarding plan describes changing cattle work, settlement and opportunities for learning. Knowledge passes through participation in particular places and tasks. Concert adaptation can bring recognition, but it does not substitute for the social conditions that sustain work singing. <ref name="southamerica2026-llano-pes">[https://normograma.mincultura.gov.co/compilacion/docs/resolucion_mincultura_0054_2014.htm Colombia Ministry of Culture, Resolution 54 and safeguarding plan, 2014]. == Musical characteristics ==

The Colombian plan distinguishes milking, leading cattle, night watch and animal-taming practices, including calls and whistles. Flexible solo delivery responds to the task and the animals; an instrumental dance pulse is not required. <ref name="southamerica2026-llano-pes">[https://normograma.mincultura.gov.co/compilacion/docs/resolucion_mincultura_0054_2014.htm Colombia Ministry of Culture, Resolution 54 and safeguarding plan, 2014]. == Geography and communities ==

Three broad overlapping fields follow the Colombian and Venezuelan plains. Colombian documentation names communities in Arauca, Casanare, Meta and Vichada; the Venezuelan inventory extends across several plains states. These are working landscapes, not merely city-based concert markets. <ref name="southamerica2026-llano-pes">[https://normograma.mincultura.gov.co/compilacion/docs/resolucion_mincultura_0054_2014.htm Colombia Ministry of Culture, Resolution 54 and safeguarding plan, 2014]. == Artists ==

The central bearers are cattle workers and community knowledge holders, including people whose names do not appear on commercial releases. Publicly identified field or demonstration recordings provide listening gateways; a popular singer’s accompanied tonada should be identified as an adaptation when used. <ref name="southamerica2026-llano-unesco">[https://ich.unesco.org/en/USL/colombian-venezuelan-llano-work-songs-01285 UNESCO, Colombian–Venezuelan llano work songs, 2017 inscription]. Broad connected home landscapes with gradual falloff; weaker urban circulation only where documented.

The fields express editorial judgments about relative musical affinity and reach, not measured audience shares. Radius is the zero edge of a linear fade; same-genre overlaps combine by maximum.
