== Summary ==

Canto a lo poeta is a Chilean poetic-musical practice joining memory, composition and improvisation. Canto a lo humano, canto a lo divino and paya have different purposes and occasions. They belong to a wider tradition without being interchangeable labels for one kind of performance. <ref name="southamerica2026-cl-poeta">[https://www.sigpa.cl/ficha-elemento/canto-a-lo-poeta SIGPA, Canto a lo poeta]. Alfonso Ureta’s work connects Pirque apprenticeship, teaching, books and recordings. His albums include Contrapunto del Tarifeño y el Diablo (2024) and Diversos Versos (2025). New arrangements and online teaching extend transmission without replacing community singing or devotional occasions. <ref name="southamerica2026-cl-ureta">[https://www.sigpa.cl/ficha-individual/alfonso-de-lourdes-ureta-munizaga SIGPA, Alfonso de Lourdes Ureta Munizaga]. == History ==

Printed Lira Popular verse and oral poetic knowledge interacted in nineteenth-century Chile. Later collecting, family learning, public performance and recording created additional routes. The relationship between writing and oral delivery is longstanding rather than a recent opposition between authentic and modern practice. <ref name="southamerica2026-cl-lira">[https://www.memoriachilena.gob.cl/602/w3-article-3320.html Biblioteca Nacional, Lira Popular]. == Musical characteristics ==

Décimas and cuartetas organize much of the verse. Sung melodic patterns and instrumental approaches vary: guitarrón chileno and guitar in local tunings are important resources. Improvised exchange, memorized verse and devotional singing place different demands on pacing and delivery. <ref name="southamerica2026-cl-poeta">[https://www.sigpa.cl/ficha-elemento/canto-a-lo-poeta SIGPA, Canto a lo poeta]. == Geography and communities ==

The field connects north-central and central Chilean rural and urban networks, including Pirque and surrounding valleys, with continuing practice toward Ñuble. It avoids treating one celebrated guitarrón locality as an isolated musical island. <ref name="southamerica2026-cl-poeta">[https://www.sigpa.cl/ficha-elemento/canto-a-lo-poeta SIGPA, Canto a lo poeta]. Juan Domingo Pérez, Alfonso Rubio and Alfonso Ureta represent connected generations.
