== Summary ==

Bomba del Chota joins song, dance, drum-making and community knowledge in northern Ecuador’s Afro-descendant Chota–Mira networks. Bomba names both an instrument and a wider musical practice. This is a specific Afro-Ecuadorian identity, distinct from Puerto Rican bomba and Esmeraldas marimba traditions. <ref name="southamerica2026-ec-bomba-inpc">[https://www.patrimoniocultural.gob.ec/la-bomba-es-parte-del-patrimonio-cultural-inmaterial-del-ecuador/ INPC, La Bomba inventory recognition, 20 October 2020]. == Contemporary and trending ==

INPC documents Black organizations seeking technical support for a safeguarding plan, with Carpuela, El Juncal and Ambuquí among the named communities. The report shows local participation in transmission; its undated publication is not presented as a new 2026 event. <ref name="southamerica2026-ec-bomba-plan">[https://www.patrimoniocultural.gob.ec/comunidades-y-organizaciones-negras-de-imbabura-y-carchi-solicitan-al-inpc-apoyo-tecnico-para-elaborar-el-plan-de-salvaguardia-de-la-bomba/ INPC, Black community organizations request support for Bomba safeguarding]. == History ==

The 2020 inventory account connects the repertoire to sugar haciendas, labour, unequal power and cultural exchange in the northern highlands. Song and dance carry community memory and identity beyond the date of institutional recognition. <ref name="southamerica2026-ec-bomba-inpc">[https://www.patrimoniocultural.gob.ec/la-bomba-es-parte-del-patrimonio-cultural-inmaterial-del-ecuador/ INPC, La Bomba inventory recognition, 20 October 2020]. == Musical characteristics ==

The bomba drum works with guitars or requinto and voices, often with a lead singer and responses. Instrumental details and tempo vary. Banda mocha offers a related but distinct instrumental setting with locally made wind instruments; its whole repertoire should not be reduced to vocal bomba. <ref name="southamerica2026-ec-chota-music">[https://casadelacultura.gob.ec/2025.php/postnoticias/obra-del-dia-la-musica-del-valle-del-chota/ Norberto Fuentes, Música del Valle del Chota, Casa de la Cultura, 7 August 2020]. == Geography and communities ==

A strong Chota–Mira field covers connected valley communities and nearby Intag relationships. A weaker Quito field represents circulation. These highland Afro-Ecuadorian networks deserve their own selection within Ecuador’s wider musical geography. <ref name="southamerica2026-ec-bomba-inpc">[https://www.patrimoniocultural.gob.ec/la-bomba-es-parte-del-patrimonio-cultural-inmaterial-del-ecuador/ INPC, La Bomba inventory recognition, 20 October 2020]. Milton Tadeo’s Carpuela recording provides a named listening gateway. Community ensembles, singers and instrument makers sustain the wider practice, while Bocapelo’s published repertoire illustrates another vocal arrangement approach. <ref name="southamerica2026-ec-bocapelo">[https://casadelacultura.gob.ec/2025.php/postnoticias/encuentro-con-bocapelo/ Casa de la Cultura, Encuentro con Bocapelo, 2020].
