== Summary ==

Athabascan fiddle music is a living social-dance tradition associated with Alaska’s Interior and neighboring northwestern Canada. Gwich’in and other communities have adapted fiddle tunes, dances and accompaniment into their own local practices.

== Contemporary and trending ==

The Athabascan Fiddlers Association and its Fairbanks radio station sustain performances and community listening. Fiddle, country and rock share parts of that broadcasting environment; the fiddle programme here remains specific to documented players and repertoire.<ref>[https://www.arts.gov/honors/heritage/trimble-gilbert-gwichin NEA National Heritage Fellow Trimble Gilbert].</ref>

== History ==

Fiddles entered northern trading networks in the nineteenth century. Generations of Indigenous musicians developed distinctive timing, tune variants and dance practice. Trimble Gilbert’s family teaching and work with Dancing with the Spirit exemplify continuing transmission.<ref>[https://www.krff891.com/?q=home KRFF: Athabascan Fiddlers Association community radio].</ref><ref>[https://www.uaf.edu/anla/collections/map/ Indigenous Peoples and Languages of Alaska: GIS data and historical scope].</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==

Repeated fiddle melodies, dance-oriented phrasing and guitar accompaniment support jigs, reels and other local dance forms. Vocal items and related dance-band material require individual context rather than blanket classification.

== Geography and communities ==

The Yukon, Tanana and connected Interior communities form the Alaska core, including Fort Yukon, Arctic Village, Venetie, Galena and Fairbanks. The tradition crosses the Alaska–Canada boundary; this Alaska listening update does not attempt to redraw the full Canadian distribution.
