View source for Asturian folk and contemporary roots

== Summary ==

Asturian folk and contemporary roots connects Asturian song, gaita-led ensembles, tonada and newer roots arrangements. It is a regional listening family rather than one rhythmic form, distinct from neighbouring Galician music.<ref>[https://www.rtve.es/play/audios/resuena-la-tierra/resuena-norte-fillas-cassandra/16810975/ RNE: Resuena el Norte con Fillas de Cassandra, 12 November 2025]</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==

Rodrigo Cuevas places inherited material in contemporary settings; continuing ensemble and vocal practice offers other entrances. New production does not make a rural-rooted repertoire an exclusively urban practice.<ref>[https://www.rtve.es/play/audios/articulo-3/articulo-3-tradicion-vanguardia-22-02-2025/16460734/ RNE Artículo 3: La tradición es vanguardia, 22 February 2025]</ref>

== History ==

Oral song, dance, instrumental playing and revival bands connect different generations. Industrial and rural memories coexist in the repertoire; heritage and current creation are overlapping aspects of the same landscape.

== Musical characteristics ==

Gaita, fiddle, flute, percussion, ensemble arrangements and prominent solo voices appear in different selections. Hevia’s electronic treatments and Llan de Cubel’s ensemble sound represent distinct approaches rather than interchangeable arrangements.

== Geography and communities ==

The field follows Asturias’s connected coast, valleys and inland communities. It overlaps softer neighbouring affinity without treating all of northwestern Spain as Galician. National popular listening stays active alongside roots music.

== Artists ==

Llan de Cubel, Tejedor, Anabel Santiago, Hevia and Rodrigo Cuevas offer a range of specific works. Collaborations retain the singers and instrumentalists actually identified by their sources.
