Songo

From MuGlobe.com

Summary

Songo is a Cuban dance-music language strongly associated with Los Van Van and the collaborative innovations of Juan Formell, pianist César 'Pupy' Pedroso and percussionist José Luis Quintana 'Changuito'. It reshaped the relationship among bass, piano, percussion and charanga instrumentation. The word can describe a particular rhythmic practice, a broader band sound or a passage within a later arrangement; it should not automatically label every recording by a given orchestra.

Contemporary and trending

Los Van Van continue under Samuel Formell, while musicians draw on songo within later dance music. Pupy y Los que Son Son offer an important later development, whose arrangements differ from early Van Van. Familiar repertoire and newly recorded performances coexist. Hearing a modern rendition of an older song does not make its recording a 1970s historical document.[1]

History

Los Van Van formed in 1969 after Formell's work with Orquesta Revé. Their early sound combined Cuban resources with electric instruments and ideas from international popular music. Chirrín chirrán, Te traigo and Aquí se enciende la candela became important examples of the new language. Ritmo Oriental developed a related but distinctive charanga-based approach. The 1970s and 1980s are a substantial musical world between mid-century classics and the later timba boom.[2]

Musical characteristics

Interlocking patterns and displaced accents give the music forward motion. Drumset elements interact with tumbadoras, güiro, bass and piano rather than simply adding a rock beat to son. Flute and violins retain the charanga connection; later Van Van arrangements added trombones and other electronic colours. There is no single pattern that explains the entire repertoire. Kevin Moore's recording-based analysis distinguishes several uses of songo and the different rhythmic solutions found across the bands.[3]

Geography and communities

Havana's bands, recording studios and dance spaces are central to songo's history. Touring, broadcasts, recordings and successive generations of dancers carried the music beyond the capital. Its distribution should show that circulation alongside locally stronger scenes, rather than treating the whole island as one uniform audience. The repertoire also connects Cuba with international salsa and casino-dance communities.

Artists

More recent performance versions should retain their own recording dates.[4][5]

Related genres

Son cubano and charanga traditions supply important foundations. Cuban salsa offers a broader dance-orchestra listening route, while Timba represents a related later development. Rumba cubana contributes rhythmic resources without making songo a form of folkloric rumba.
