== Summary ==
Bolivian Lowlands covers Santa Cruz, Beni and Pando, bringing the eastern plains and northern Amazonian departments into a broad regional frame. Taquirari and chovena are recognizable parts of its regional song and dance repertoire, but they coexist with city-based popular production and highly localized Indigenous ceremonial traditions. Chiquitania’s chovena and Moxos’s Ichapekene Piesta belong to different communities and settings; neither can stand for the entire lowlands.<ref name="bo-low-music">[https://www.soysantacruz.com.bo/SSCB_Contenidos.php?CualBasAux=sscb&CualForAux=general&CualOpcAux=1&CualSubOpcAux=CO-02_Festividades-Tradiciones-y-Juegos-Populares.&CualTabAux=departamento Festividades, tradiciones y juegos populares: el taquirari y la chobena], Soy Santa Cruz.</ref><ref name="bo-low-piesta">[https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/ichapekene-piesta-the-biggest-festival-of-san-ignacio-de-moxos-00627 Ichapekene Piesta, the biggest festival of San Ignacio de Moxos], UNESCO.</ref>

The region is also an important centre of mission-derived music, maintained, transformed and researched by local musicians. Its archives contain music associated with both European and Indigenous composers, while living communities preserve instruments, celebrations and performance knowledge. This history helps explain the international concert connections of the lowlands without making their music an exclusively colonial inheritance.<ref name="bo-apac-history">[https://festivalesapac.com/musica/ Música: Festival Internacional de Música Renacentista y Barroca Americana Misiones de Chiquitos], Asociación Pro Arte y Cultura.</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==
Recent activity spans several musical economies. APAC announced its fifteenth Misiones de Chiquitos festival for 17–26 April 2026, placing national and international ensembles in historic churches and other cultural venues. Bolivia’s education ministry subsequently announced Ensamble Moxos’s September–October 2026 tour of Germany, Spain, Belgium and France. Both demonstrate institutions connecting local teaching and repertoire to international performance.<ref name="bo-apac2026">[https://festivalesapac.com/xv-festival-internacional-de-musica-renacentista-y-barroca-americana-misiones-de-chiquitos-2026/ XV Festival Internacional de Música Renacentista y Barroca Americana Misiones de Chiquitos 2026], Asociación Pro Arte y Cultura.</ref><ref name="bo-moxos2026">[https://www.minedu.gob.bo/index.php?Itemid=854&catid=182%3Anoticias&id=8469%3Aensamble-moxos-a-europa-musical-amazonia-boliviana&option=com_content&view=article El Ensamble Moxos lleva a Europa el patrimonio musical de la Amazonía boliviana], Ministerio de Educación de Bolivia.</ref>

Santa Cruz’s commercial musicians move between Latin genres. In March 2025, Corona, Luis Vega and Bonny Lovy presented “Mi debilidad” as salsa; their interview described considering cumbia or trap before deciding on that arrangement.<ref name="bo-low-salsa">[https://unitel.bo/noticias/farandula/mi-debilidad-la-rica-salsa-que-presentan-corona-luis-vega-y-bonny-lovy-DF15238308 Mi debilidad, la rica salsa que presentan Corona, Luis Vega y Bonny Lovy], UNITEL.</ref> A different September 2025 production had Piraí Vaca rework Los Cambitas’ chovena “Lamento Yuki” for classical guitar. Regional repertory thus circulates through new instrumental treatments as well as festive performances.<ref name="bo-low-pirai">[https://unitel.bo/noticias/sociedad/homenaje-musical-a-santa-cruz-pirai-vaca-interpreta-el-iconico-lamento-yuki-KH17453494 Homenaje musical a Santa Cruz: Piraí Vaca interpreta el icónico Lamento Yuki], UNITEL.</ref>

Cobija has its own civic music calendar. A September 2026 local report announced a departmental-anniversary serenade featuring Explosión Band, Lado B and Lorenzo Fernández. This is evidence of a specific northern performance circuit, rather than grounds for transferring Santa Cruz’s musical profile wholesale to Pando.<ref name="bo-cobija2026">[https://pandodigital.net/pando-celebra-88-anos-con-desfiles-y-serenata-a-pesar-de-la-lluvia/ Pando celebra 88 años con desfiles y serenata a pesar de la lluvia], Pando Digital.</ref>

== History ==
Mission institutions reshaped musical life in Chiquitos and Moxos during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Manuscripts later recovered and studied include sacred works by musicians of different backgrounds; the surviving settlements also retained forms of instrument making and communal celebration. APAC established its festival in 1996 partly to bring archived repertoire back into performance and liturgical use.<ref name="bo-apac-history" />

The preservation story includes Indigenous custodians. Ensamble Moxos describes research undertaken with adult Moxeño Trinitario violinists in communities of the Isiboro Sécure territory, whose musical inheritance is connected to the search for the Loma Santa. Manuscripts and practical knowledge were not simply waiting in an empty archive: people maintained them through their own histories and beliefs.<ref name="bo-moxos-research">[https://ensamblemoxos.wordpress.com/investigacion/ Investigación y labor social de la Escuela de Música de San Ignacio], Ensamble Moxos.</ref>

Northern border experience introduces another history. Pinky Landívar’s recollections of older Cobija carnival describe bands playing Brazilian sambas, marchinhas and xote in local dance venues. Read as situated memory rather than a contemporary census, this account documents how the Brazilian border could shape a town’s festive sound.<ref name="bo-cobija-memory">[https://www.soldepando.com/cobija-y-su-carnaval/ Cobija y su carnaval de antaño: Memorias de Pinky Landívar], Sol de Pando.</ref> Regional song has also been carried through recurring public celebrations: Los Cambitas and Guísela Santa Cruz opened the 2024 “Santa Cruz en Septiembre” cultural caravan.<ref name="bo-cruceno2024">[https://www.reduno.com.bo/noticias/junto-a-los-cambitas-arranco-la-caravana-cultural-santa-cruz-en-septiembre-por-la-red-uno--202491123824 Santa Cruz en Septiembre: Espectacular recibimiento de Red Uno al mes de los cruceños], Red Uno.</ref>

Taquirari and chovena are useful starting points for hearing the eastern repertoire’s dance orientation. Santa Cruz’s regional cultural account describes both in duple metre, distinguishes religious from carnival chovenas, and relates taquirari’s development as song to the addition of lyrics by local poets and composers. The dance names therefore encompass changing arrangements and performance uses, not one permanently fixed instrumental formula.<ref name="bo-low-music" />

Historical field documentation makes the local detail audible even when no recording is being played here. James C. Jones’s notes for San Ignacio de Moxos in 1978 identify Cirilo Yaca on side-blown flute, drums and dancers’ nut-shell ankle rattles in a ''Taquirari de los Macheteros''. These are precise observations from a particular occasion, distinct from a commercial taquirari recording.<ref name="bo-low-archive">[https://americanindian.si.edu/collections-search/edan-record/ead_component%3Asova-nmai-ac-110-ref4 Music Tape #2: James C. Jones collection from Bolivia], National Museum of the American Indian.</ref>

Ichapekene Piesta combines ancestral and animal figures, ritual action and music associated with the missions. Its masked groups and representations of forest and water beings situate sound within relationships among people, ancestors and environment.<ref name="bo-low-piesta" /> At another end of the spectrum, Matamba’s own 2022 interview explains a path from Santa Cruz hardcore bands toward roots reggae and the fusion he calls dreadcore. The lowlands’ musical vocabulary thus includes heavy amplified textures alongside flutes, strings, dance-song and sacred ensembles.<ref name="bo-low-matamba">[https://fmhit99.com/la-energia-de-matamba-la-musica-te-llega-abraza-y-te-manda-a-escribir-en-esta-entrevista-el-artista-nos-comparte-sus-proyectos-para-este-2022/ La energía de Matamba: La música te llega, abraza y te manda a escribir], Radio Hit.</ref>

== Artists ==
Los Cambitas and Guísela Santa Cruz offer entry points into public representations of cruceño regional song; their 2024 joint appearance is also a reminder that established repertory remains part of contemporary civic performance.<ref name="bo-cruceno2024" /> Piraí Vaca’s “Lamento Yuki” interpretation offers a contrasting instrumental approach to a piece associated with Los Cambitas.<ref name="bo-low-pirai" /> Gladys Moreno’s legacy has an institutional home in the Casa del Arte Gladys Moreno, whose participation in the 2025 museum-night programme involved cultural manager Mery Laura Herbas and the singer’s family.<ref name="bo-gladys-house">[https://larganochedelosmuseos.gmsantacruz.gob.bo/2025/lugares.php?lugar=casa-cultural-gladys-moreno Doña Gladys: Participa en la Larga Noche de los Museos 2025], Gobierno Autónomo Municipal de Santa Cruz de la Sierra.</ref>

Ensamble Moxos represents a collective educational project as well as a touring ensemble. Its history names Moxeño instrument maker Miguel Uche and records the importance of recordings and touring from 2005 onward. Teachers, pupils, makers and community musicians all belong in an account of its sound.<ref name="bo-moxos-history">[https://ensamblemoxos.blogspot.com/2013/07/nuestra-historia.html Nuestra historia], Ensamble Moxos / Escuela de Música de San Ignacio de Moxos.</ref> Bonny Lovy, Luis Vega, Corona and Matamba illustrate other kinds of authorship: studio collaboration, genre-switching and alternative-band networks. Their inclusion broadens the regional portrait beyond its heritage festivals.<ref name="bo-low-salsa" /><ref name="bo-low-matamba" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved outline consists of the full departments of Santa Cruz, Beni and Pando. It joins the Santa Cruz metropolitan area, Chiquitania, Moxos and northern border towns in one provisional broad synthesis. It does not imply that Chiquitano, Moxeño or other Indigenous musical territories follow departmental borders, nor that an urban recording market represents every rural community.

The geography remains an editor-authored visual aid. The underlying inventory flags limited direct evidence for a single contemporary regional listening field. The sources here strengthen particular accounts—festivals, teaching institutions, named recordings, historical performance and civic programmes—without turning those examples into measured audience shares. Pando’s border repertoire and the lowlands’ many distinct Indigenous communities are especially important limits on treating the whole polygon as one musical public.
