View source for Cordillera gangsa music

== Summary ==

Cordillera gangsa music encompasses flat-gong ensemble traditions of northern Luzon. Interacting gong parts accompany community ceremonies and dances; practices differ among Kalinga, Bontok and other Cordillera peoples.<ref name="islands2026-philippines">[https://ncca.gov.ph/about-ncca-3/subcommissions/subcommission-on-the-arts-sca/music/traditional-forms-of-music/ Traditional Forms of Music], accessed 24 October 2026.</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==

Community-made recordings of pattung and related dances show continuing participation. A performance’s named community matters more than treating the whole mountain region as one interchangeable ensemble.

== History ==

The traditions belong to local ceremonial and social histories, alongside continuing adaptation. They should not be collapsed into southern Philippine kulintang or mistaken for Balinese instruments also called gangsa.<ref name="islands2026-cordillera-gangsa">[https://kababayangpilipino.org/percussion/ Percussion: Cordillera gangsa and southern kulintang], accessed 24 October 2026.</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==

Flat gongs create layered rhythmic parts. Playing posture, hand or beater technique and movement vary with the specific practice; pattung and toppaya are useful distinctions rather than synonyms for all Cordillera music.

== Geography and communities ==

The field covers a connected northern Luzon mountain landscape at a deliberately local scale. Its soft edge expresses an editorial approximation, not a border defining community identity.

== Artists ==

The Butbut performance from Tinglayan and the Sacasacan performance from Sadanga identify different local contexts. Where individual musicians are not named in the source, the catalogue retains that uncertainty.
