== Summary ==
South Florida brings English-language pop, hip-hop, R&B, rock and country into close contact with Latin and Caribbean popular music. Its distinctive affinities include Cuban and other Latin repertoires, Haitian konpa and roots music, reggae, soca, Puerto Rican music and community percussion traditions. These connections extend beyond metropolitan Miami into Broward, Palm Beach, the Keys and other communities, while the Gulf Coast and inland peninsula add different listening worlds.<ref name="sf-historymiami">[https://temp.historymiami.org/folklifecenter/highlighted-projects/traditions-south-florida-folklife/ Traditions: South Florida Folklife], HistoryMiami Museum, historical exhibition text; substantive regional account of music in clubs, radio, religious events, community festivals and family gatherings.</ref>

Migration continues to enlarge the region's repertoire. Florida's 2025 apprenticeship register documents Peruvian huayno singing taught between Sunrise and Davie; recent entries also document Irish music in Miami and Miami Shores. These are particular community attachments within a much broader popular-music environment.<ref name="sf-apprentice">[https://dos.fl.gov/cultural/programs/florida-folklife-program/apprenticeship-program/apprenticeship-participants/ Apprenticeship Participants], Florida Department of State; 2025 Peruvian huayno singing and 2023–2024 Irish music entries, substantive participant register accessed October 18, 2026.</ref>

Musical life also connects South Florida with Caribbean communities abroad. A Smithsonian account of a gathering in Davie describes Jamaican Americans participating in choral, mento and other group performances. Such occasions combine social memory, communal listening and music carried across borders.<ref name="sf-jamaican">[https://festival.si.edu/blog/2014/celebrating-jamaican-folklore-and-the-life-of-olive-lewin Celebrating Jamaican Folklore and the Life of Olive Lewin], Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, 2014; first-hand account of a Davie community gathering, not a current regional audience survey.</ref>

== History ==
South Florida's music reflects Indigenous, African American, Bahamian, Cuban, Haitian and many other histories. HistoryMiami's fieldwork-based accounts place music within homes, religious observances, neighborhood events, clubs and radio. They also describe the ways Caribbean traditions change through contact with US popular music while retaining social and religious meanings.<ref name="sf-historymiami" /> A musical introduction must therefore reach beyond either the tourist soundtrack or the careers of internationally famous Latin stars.

The broad popular mixture and the more distinctive affinities overlap continually. Salsa, merengue, reggae, soca and konpa can appear in clubs and commercial media, while Afro-Cuban batá and rumba, Haitian ceremonial percussion, Puerto Rican bomba and plena, Trinidadian steel pan and Indo-Caribbean drumming have more particular communal settings. HistoryMiami's percussion study explains these different uses and the relationships between public performance, family celebration and religious knowledge.<ref name="sf-percussion">[https://temp.historymiami.org/folklifecenter/highlighted-projects/caribbean-percussion-traditions-in-miami/ Caribbean Percussion Traditions in Miami], HistoryMiami Museum, substantive community research account; historical fieldwork context, not present-day listening shares.</ref>

Cecilia Borhorquez's Peruvian huayno teaching and Paul Groff's Irish music offer two recent community entry points.<ref name="sf-apprentice" /> The Jamaican Folk Revue, Tallawah Mento Band and South Florida Caribbean Choral open further routes into Jamaican musical life documented in Broward County.<ref name="sf-jamaican" /> Miami's extensive urban popular-music culture is described in its separate metropolitan article.

== Boundary definition and research ==
The broad working proxy comprises Broward, Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Lee, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, St. Lucie and Sarasota counties. Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Palm Beach is the strongest documented Caribbean and Latin musical core; the southwest coast, inland communities and Keys should not simply inherit its exact profile. This outer county envelope is MuGlobe's approximation of southern peninsular geography.

The recognized North/Central/South Florida distinction is porous. The consulted Lamme–Oldakowski abstract treats regional perceptions as contested and changing; no inaccessible survey figures or precise musical boundary are borrowed from it.<ref name="sf-lamme">[https://doi.org/10.1353/sgo.2007.0029 Spinning a New Geography of Vernacular Regional Identity: Florida in the Twenty-First Century], Ary J. Lamme and Ray Oldakowski, Southeastern Geographer 47(2), 2007, pages 320–340; author abstract consulted, full text not accessed.</ref> Florida's current cultural program places Latin-Caribbean connections in central as well as southern Florida, supporting a transition rather than an abrupt dividing line.<ref name="sf-tours">[https://dos.fl.gov/communications/press-releases/2025/icymi-secretary-of-state-cord-byrd-announces-launch-of-florida-s-backroad-country-on-florida-music-tours/ Florida's Backroad Country on Florida Music Tours], Florida Department of State, October 3, 2025; regional cultural-program description.</ref>

Urban and suburban immigrant networks, older coastal populations, inland agricultural communities and tourist settings require different descriptions. Ethnicity or density alone cannot determine an individual's listening. Cross-border musical relationships extend through the Caribbean, while country, gospel, rock and other familiar US repertoire remain part of South Florida's ordinary listening life.

Disclosed thirteen-county South Florida working envelope: Broward, Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Lee, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, St. Lucie, Sarasota. Miami–Fort Lauderdale has a separate developed-urban overlay; Gulf/east-coast differences remain in the profile. The vernacular musical transition is not a surveyed county-line break.
