== Summary ==
Māori waiata are songs through which people express affection, grief, history, relationships and belonging. The catalogue entry centres traditional waiata and their continuing lives rather than treating every contemporary song by a Māori artist as one musical genre. Words carry genealogy, place and shared knowledge, while melody and performance give them emotional force. A waiata can support a speaker, honour a person or preserve a complex account of events. It is therefore a poetic and social practice as much as a collection of melodies for detached listening. <ref name="ge-maori-waiata">[https://teara.govt.nz/en/traditional-maori-songs-waiata-tawhito/print Traditional Maori songs: waiata tawhito, Te Ara].</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==
Waiata continue on marae, in homes, schools, language-learning settings and public cultural occasions. Older material is taught alongside new composition, and recorded resources can support learning without replacing guidance from knowledgeable people. The language revitalisation context makes participation particularly consequential. An elder’s rendition and a large group’s polished presentation may serve different purposes. Regional language and expressive choices remain audible. Ruakere Hond’s documented discussion of Taranaki waiata tawhito illustrates why local knowledge should complicate the idea of one nationally standard traditional song style. <ref name="new-pacific-moteatea">[https://natlib.govt.nz/records/47536159 A conversation with Dr Ruakere Hond — National Library of New Zealand].</ref>

== History ==
Māori song traditions developed over many generations within Aotearoa’s particular landscapes and iwi and hapū histories. European contact brought new instruments, musical resources and pressures on language and cultural life. Missionary hymnody and later popular songs entered Māori composition without simply replacing older chant and poetic forms. Collectors and Māori scholars helped preserve texts, but a printed collection cannot hold all the knowledge of performance. Āpirana Ngata’s Ngā Mōteatea project is a major reference within a continuing history of Māori documentation, teaching and cultural renewal.

== Musical characteristics ==
Traditional waiata can use a relatively concentrated pitch range, extended phrases and subtle ornament, with several singers maintaining continuity as individuals breathe. Text and melodic movement are closely connected; a literal translation cannot supply the full poetic meaning. Waiata aroha, waiata tangi and oriori are useful distinctions involving love, lament and the nurturing or instruction of children. Other songs use harmony and instrumental accompaniment. These differences should be heard within their settings rather than arranged on a scale from primitive chant to modern music.

== Geography and communities ==
The strongest broad landscape spans the North Island’s interconnected Māori communities, including the East Coast, Bay of Plenty, Northland and urban centres. Southern iwi and urban communities have their own living traditions, so the South Island should not disappear from a Rotorua-centred map. Māori communities in Australia provide meaningful diaspora continuation. MuGlobe uses broad overlapping home fields and a lighter Australian diaspora field. These indicate cultural connection, practice and teaching, not a boundary declaring which iwi owns a particular song or which district has the most legitimate tradition.

== Artists ==
Composers, knowledgeable elders and iwi-based singers are more appropriate gateways than a single celebrity list. Tuini Ngāwai, Ngoingoi Pēwhairangi and Hirini Melbourne illustrate different histories of composition and language-centred musical work, while their repertoires extend beyond the entry’s traditional focus. Māori-led archival and teaching projects help connect names, texts and communities. When exploring a waiata, follow its credited composer and people as well as its tune. Some songs have particular protocols or community responsibilities; learning their context enriches the listening rather than reducing the music to an anonymous national songbook.

== Related genres ==
Kapa haka incorporates waiata within a larger group-performance world that also includes movement, poi and haka. Mōteatea is an overlapping term especially associated with traditional sung poetry and lament, but usages depend on context. Māori hymnody and contemporary Māori popular music have related histories without all being the same style. Haka is not simply a loud version of any waiata. Keeping these distinctions allows listeners to explore song as poetry, historical knowledge, ceremony and contemporary creation while recognising that practitioners move naturally among several forms.

== Hotspot mushrooms ==
Waiata live in connected iwi, hapū and urban communities across Aotearoa, with distinct southern continuity and meaningful Australian diaspora. Broad fields express practice and teaching rather than song ownership boundaries or famous-city samples.

These fields are editorial illustrations of musical affinity and cultural reach, not listener statistics. Radius marks the zero edge of the fade; overlapping fields of this genre combine by maximum.
