== Life and career ==
Born in 1946 near Jos, he lost his parents in infancy; his performing name means the Little Orphan of Jos. Local musicians shaped his early interests. Hearing performers in Maiduguri encouraged him to make a kuntigi and develop the self-accompanied style for which he became known.<ref name="danmaraya-ucla" />

== Music and style ==
Rapidly repeated lute patterns support his singing, sometimes changing pitch to follow the vocal line. His subjects include workers and relationships. UCLA's study of his marriage songs describes dramatic characterization, including imitated voices, as well as advice and criticism. The small instrumental texture leaves room for detailed verbal storytelling.<ref name="danmaraya-ucla" />

== Works and performances ==
'Wak'ar Karen Mota' honors a driver's mate. 'Jawabin Aure', 'Auren Dole' and 'Gulma-Wuya' explore marriage, coercion and gossip. In a 2015 interview, his son Anas emphasized that the repertoire celebrated both ordinary people and prominent figures, and connected its lasting appeal with the social issues it addressed.<ref name="danmaraya-ucla" /><ref name="danmaraya-son">[https://widely113.rssing.com/chan-9329670/all_p7.html Punch Newspapers: interview with Dan Maraya Jos’s son Anas, 27 September 2015, archived feed copy].
