Summary
Jonah Sithole (1952–1997) was a Zimbabwean guitarist, singer and composer whose mbira-related guitar playing helped shape Chimurenga. His work with Thomas Mapfumo and The Blacks Unlimited was a major setting for that contribution.<ref name="jonah-lion">Banning Eyre: Lion Songs, publisher preview, 2015. == Life and career ==
Sithole worked within Zimbabwe's changing band scene rather than one permanent accompanying role. His periods with Mapfumo were particularly consequential because the guitar parts helped transform familiar musical resources into the amplified ensemble sound heard by a growing public.

Music and style
He drew melodic ideas directly from mbira performances and singing. Eyre's study emphasizes that he did not himself play mbira: his guitar was a creative translation informed by listening, rather than a simple instrumental substitution. The emotional contour and placement of a line mattered alongside its repeating pattern. This makes the guitarist an author of the Chimurenga sound, not merely an anonymous backing player.<ref name="jonah-study">Banning Eyre: Thomas Mapfumo and the Popularization of Shona Mbira, African Music, 2015. Recordings from his periods with Mapfumo provide a route into the relationship between lead guitar, rhythm guitar and the voice. The early Blacks Unlimited sound and the later incorporation of mbira offer a useful comparison, while the exact personnel should be checked against each recording's credits.
