== Summary ==
Xote brasileiro is a Brazilian family of dance and musical practices descended from the nineteenth-century schottische and reshaped in different regional worlds. Within northeastern forró, xote commonly supplies a relaxed, swaying partnered dance and a strong repertoire of romantic and everyday songs. The same label also belongs to southern accordion and dance traditions whose history should remain visible. It is a rhythm and dance setting rather than a single national band sound. A singer, accordionist and pair of dancers can all reveal different aspects of its identity.

== Contemporary and trending ==
Xote remains part of living forró dances, June festivities, regional shows and accordion repertoire. In many settings it offers space for close dancing and lyrical expression alongside faster numbers. It circulates through both acoustic trios and amplified popular bands. Southern regional dances also maintain their own xote repertories. A genre tag can therefore conceal differences in accent, instrumentation and bodily style. Contemporary vitality is better recognised through repeated dance use and transmission than through an attempt to measure all these practices as one chart category. <ref name="ga-forro">[https://www.gov.br/iphan/pt-br/assuntos/forro-do-mundo/sobre-o-forro Sobre o forró — Iphan].</ref>

== History ==
The international schottische entered Brazilian social dancing in the nineteenth century and acquired local names and accents. In the Northeast it became deeply integrated into accordion-led music and, later, forró’s recorded and touring worlds. Luiz Gonzaga and subsequent generations made xote songs nationally familiar. The museum documentation of Gonzaga’s career places xotes beside baiões and other forms, showing a varied repertoire rather than one undifferentiated beat. Southern histories developed through another set of regional encounters and institutions, so the Brazilian label preserves related but nonidentical trajectories. <ref name="new-gonzaga-cais">[https://caisdosertao.pe.gov.br/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Cais_texto-base_LUIZ-GONZAGA_Paulo-Leda-Anselmo.pdf Cais do Sertão Luiz Gonzaga: conteúdos parciais produzidos pelos consultores — Paulo Vanderley, Leda Dias, Anselmo Alves].</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==
A relatively even partnered sway is supported by recurring low accents and gently displaced chord or percussion figures. Accordion melody and chord movement can make a small group sound full; triangle and zabumba provide different types of articulation in northeastern performance. Voice often favours a clear, memorable melodic line. Faster or heavily amplified arrangements can change the surface considerably while retaining the underlying dance relation. To distinguish xote from baião, listen to the pattern’s weight and the dancers’ movement rather than treating moderate tempo as sufficient evidence.

== Geography and communities ==
The Northeast forms a large connected xote landscape, including the Sertão, Agreste and cities. The Southeast has a strong adopted forró-dance world rooted both in migration and later urban scenes, extending beyond individual club addresses. A separate southern field acknowledges xote in gaúcho and neighbouring regional traditions rather than erasing it beneath northeastern usage. These broad mushrooms overlap other music because regional repertoires are shared. They are an editorial view of sustained practice, not a claim that xote has the same function in every location.

== Artists ==
Luiz Gonzaga, Dominguinhos and Marinês are useful northeastern references; later bands and singers brought new arrangements and audiences. Trio Nordestino and accordion-led ensembles demonstrate the small-group dance setting particularly clearly. Southern accordionists and regional groups should be explored through their own repertoire rather than evaluated as departures from the northeastern version. Listen across instrumental and vocal performances, noting how the same dance family accommodates teasing, tenderness, nostalgia and exuberance. A celebrated performer’s entire discography should not be labelled xote merely because several well-known songs use it.

== Related genres ==
Forró provides the principal northeastern social umbrella; baião, xaxado and arrasta-pé are neighbouring forms with different rhythmic and dance associations. Southern regional music connects xote to other partnered dances and accordion repertories. Schottische supplies historical context but does not explain away the Brazilian practices as imported copies. Romantic forró may use xote extensively without being a synonym for it. Keeping those levels separate allows the map to show a broad dance-language distribution while individual articles and recordings describe the local accents within it.
