== Summary ==
Cururu cuiabano is a musical, poetic and devotional practice of the Baixada Cuiabana and connected upper Paraguay-basin communities. Viola de cocho, scraped percussion, singing and the participants’ arrangement in a circle give it a distinctive character. Verses can praise saints, remember shared experience or develop a challenge through improvisation. The term cururu also exists elsewhere in Brazil, so the Cuiabano qualifier matters. This article concerns a particular regional world in which instrument craft, sung prayer and community gatherings remain intertwined, rather than a generic national rhyme contest. <ref name="new-cocho-iphan">[https://www.gov.br/iphan/pt-br/superintendencias/mato-grosso/patrimonio-imaterial Patrimônio Imaterial: Mato Grosso — Iphan].</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==
It continues in saint festivities, community gatherings, teaching and staged cultural presentations. Workshops connecting viola making with music and dance show that transmission includes craft as well as performance. Older practitioners carry knowledge of verses, tunings, ritual sequences and local relationships. Public festivals can bring wider recognition while concentrating activity into short stage slots. An extended devotional occasion may reveal a different sense of musical time. Contemporary practice is sustained by those complementary settings, not only by whether recordings attract a mass commercial audience. <ref name="new-cocho-diamantino">[https://www.diamantino.mt.gov.br/Imprensa/Noticias/Oficinas-de-confeccao-de-viola-de-cocho-e-danca-siriri-e-cururu-estao-com-inscricoes-abertas-em-diamantino-4213/ Oficinas de confecção de viola de cocho e dança siriri e cururu — Prefeitura de Diamantino].</ref>

== History ==
The region’s practices developed through colonial religious encounters, Indigenous and African-descended participation, settlement and river-based social worlds. Broad claims of one pure origin cannot explain the resulting form. The viola de cocho became embedded in local festive and devotional life, its making passing through experienced craftspeople. Cururu and siriri developed related but different functions within this complex. Urban growth and migration later changed where events took place and how practitioners organised. Heritage attention to instrument-making acknowledges this wider cultural setting rather than treating the viola as an isolated museum object. <ref name="ga-cocho">[https://www.gov.br/iphan/pt-br/superintendencias/mato-grosso/patrimonio-imaterial Patrimônio Imaterial: Mato Grosso — Iphan].</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==
Viola de cocho has a resonant carved wooden body and a timbre unlike the brighter paired-course viola caipira. The ganzá in this regional context refers to a scraped instrument, so the name should not automatically suggest a shaker. Instruments support sung phrases and the cycle of exchange among participants. Improvised verse requires memory, rhyme and attention to ceremonial context. Traditional participation has often been male, though public representation and teaching can change roles. Listening to how a verse meets the instrumental pulse helps reveal the practice’s particular balance of continuity and invention.

== Geography and communities ==
Cuiabá, Várzea Grande, Santo Antônio de Leverger, Poconé and neighbouring river communities belong to a continuous Baixada landscape. Cáceres and the Pantanal connect to a larger upper Paraguay-basin musical world extending toward Mato Grosso do Sul. The map uses a strong Baixada field and a lighter basin continuation rather than isolated bubbles at Cuiabá, Poconé and Corumbá. Their differences still matter, so the broader field does not claim uniform repertoire. It makes visible shared ecological, social and musical connections that city-only data would obscure.

== Artists ==
Cururueiros, viola makers and local community groups are the most appropriate artist gateways. Masters who teach both making and playing carry knowledge that a singer-only credit would miss. Lourenço da Guia is one documented regional craft-teaching reference, while family and neighbourhood circles sustain a much wider practice. Seek performances credited to their community and occasion rather than expect one nationally definitive star. Comparing an informal sung exchange, a devotional gathering and a festival excerpt helps show how space and purpose alter delivery without reducing the tradition to a staged dance.

== Related genres ==
Siriri shares instruments and regional communities but has a different partnered and group-dance organisation. Cururu paulista belongs to another history of viola and poetic challenge, so the shared name does not justify one identical map. Música caipira offers related interior-Brazilian connections while using different instrument and repertoire conventions. Rasqueado cuiabano is another regional musical world rather than a synonym. The useful common frame is the Baixada/Pantanal cultural complex: people, craft, prayer, song and celebration connect these forms without making them interchangeable genres.

Baixada Cuiabana and connected upper-Paraguay/Pantanal networks are the landscape. Use shared broad regions rather than copying three legacy city points; lower continuation intentionally lighter.

These fields are editorial illustrations of musical affinity and cultural reach, not listener statistics. Radius marks the zero edge of the fade; overlapping fields of this genre combine by maximum.
